Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell's Secret to 40+ Years Without Marriage

The beloved couple has been together for more than 40 years and is still going strong.

One of the cutest longtime couples in the Hollywood scene today is Goldie Hawn (79), and Kurt Russell (74). They've been together for over 40 years and are still going strong. (Just take a look at the lovebirds smiling on the red carpet at this years Oscars—total swoon!) Let's take a closer look at the couple's relationship, including their secrets to 40+ loving years without marriage.

Hawn Thought Russell Was "Adorable," but "Much Too Young" When She First Met Him

When Hawn and Russell first met, it was really young love at its finest. The year was 1966, and it was the set of Disney's musical The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, according to The Knot.

Hawn told Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4, "I was 21 and he was 16 and I thought he was adorable but he was much too young. And then years later we met up again and I liked him and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. But we both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."

Fast-forward to 2025, and the couple has a beautiful committed relationship with a close family.

The Love Bug Officially Hit When Hawn Saw How Great Russell Was With Her Kids

Hawn and Russell reconnected in 1983 on the set of Swing Shift. The love bug officially hit when the actress saw how great Russell was with her two children, Oliver and Kate Hudson, who she had with ex-husband Bill Hudson. (At the time, Russell was the father of son Boston Russell, who he had with ex-wife Season Hubley.)

"Mom said that's when she fell in love with Kurt," Kate recalled to Oliver on their "Sibling Revelry" podcast in 2019. "Because she brought him back to the house and we had already been asleep, and we shared a room, and he sat down next to each of us, he sat down next to you first and watched you sleep and then came by."

Hawn also shared with PEOPLE, "What really got me was when I watched my kids when they'd come to the set and how he was with them. He was amazing with them. He was such a natural."

The Couple Combined Their Families Quite Naturally

The couple combined their families quite naturally and had a son together in 1986, Wyatt Russell.

The pair are also grandparents to eight grandchildren, according to PEOPLE. Kate has three children (Ryder Russell Robinson, Bingham Hawn, and Rani Rose), Oliver also has three children (Bodhi Hawn, Wilder Brooks, and Rio Laura), and Wyatt has two sons (Buddy Prine and Boone Joseph).

Kate seems very close to Russell. Her son's middle name is even Russell, and she and brother Oliver call Kurt Russell "Pa."

During a November 2024 podcast episode, Oliver shared, "The love was there with Kurt, there's no doubt that he is my dad. I call him Pa." Kate also recently posted on Instagram for Russell's birthday, writing, "Love this man so much! Happy birthday Pa! You are truly one of a kind."

What Makes Hawn and Russell's Relationship So Successful—and Why They Never Got Married

So why didn't Hawn and Russell ever tie the knot? The answer is pretty simple.

Hawn told Porter in 2015, per E! News, "A lasting relationship isn't about marriage. It's about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work. If one person does not want it to work, it isn't going to work. Intention is the key. It's also about not losing yourself in each other. Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being different, not having to agree on everything, learning how to deal with not agreeing. Everything's a choice."

Hawn also shared with CNN in 2023, "Why should we get married? When it doesn't work out, it ends up to be big business … How many divorces are fun? How many divorces actually don't cost money? How many divorces make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?"

The pair is still in love, and it seems after all this time together, they are definitely in it for the long haul!
