How Olympic Medalist Misty May-Treanor Keeps Herself In Shape

Find out the beach volleyball star's secrets.

Misty May-Treanor is one of the greatest beach volleyball players of all time. She and her teammate, Kerri Walsh, won gold medals in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games. She’s also in the Volleyball Hall Of Fame. Even though she’s retired from the sport, Misty makes sure to keep herself in shape. Here are 5 of her secrets.

1

She Does Pigeon Pose

Misty shared some of her wellness secrets with SELF. She says that there’s one pose that really works her body. “Pigeon pose. [Sit on floor with one leg straight out behind you, other leg under you so front knee is pointing out.] This posture has been great for my tight hips.”

2

She Switches Up Her Workouts

Misty does a lot of different workouts to keep herself in shape. She shared some of her favorites in an interview with The New York Times. “I think athletes in general have to be a little more disciplined and get our work in. I take Pilates. Yoga is important. I have tended to go back to Olympic-style lifting. Cleans and squats for me are important.”

3

She Doesn’t Push Her Body Too Hard

While Misty makes sure to workout on a regular basis, she also doesn’t push herself too hard if she isn’t feeling great. “I lift twice a week, and on other days incorporate more core yoga and different exercises,” she said to The New York Times. “It’s important to listen to your body. I will shut it down if I’m tired. Before there were times I would push through. But there is nothing wrong with saying, ‘I’m tired.'”

4

She Works Her Entire Body

Misty makes sure that she works her entire body. “It’s just as important to work on the little muscle groups as well as the big muscle groups,” she explains to The New York Times. “People, when they train, go to gyms. I call them nightclub bodies — ginormous up top, and legs are little sticks. You see a lot of people and they forget you can’t leave the little muscles behind. When the bigger muscle groups fatigue and you’re not strong in the smaller muscle groups, that’s when injuries occur.”

5

She Makes Healthy Sandwiches

Misty makes sure to eat a healthy diet. She tells Fit Bottomed Girls that she likes making healthy sandwiches. “It depends on how I’m feeling, but I like roast beef and avocado, whole-grain bread with different veggies. I love tuna with sprouts and red onion and cucumber. That’s the beauty of sandwiches: you can make it however you’re feeling. There’s no wrong or right way to make a sandwich.”
