Alyson, who has struggled with an eating disorder most of her life, joined forces with YouTuber Michelle Khare for a "body makeover." Her goal was to gain muscle, maintain her vegan diet, and improve her overall health."I am used to offering a finished product, not being the work in progress," she told Popsugar.

Strength Training

Alyson started with exercise. She executed an impressive five to seven workouts a week, focusing mainly on strength training. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

3

Protein Centric Diet

Alyson, a long time vegan, stuck to her plant-based plan. However, she made sure to consume a lot of protein. According to clinical trials, consuming more protein than the recommended dietary allowance not only reduces body weight (BW), but also enhances body composition by decreasing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass (FFM) in both low-calorie and standard-calorie diets.

4

Sleep[

Sleep was another priority in her shape-up plan. She committed to getting a whopping eight hours a night, even while working 10 up to 18. What are the health benefits of sleep? According to the Sleep Foundation, getting enough z's is a mood booster, promotes heart health, regulates blood sugar, improves mental function, restores your immune system, helps relieve stress, and aids in weight loss.

The end result? Alyson gained four pounds of muscle and lost three percent body fat, and gained a lot of self-esteem. "I know that I'm feeling better, and I know that I'm better off than I was when I started," she said. "I'm already walking in a different kind of success, no matter what the numbers say."

6

Micro Reset

Alyson has a trick for her mental health: The "micro reset." She told Well + Good that she does periodic self-checks and assesses what she needs, whether that is a mental break or a 10-minute workout. "It's helped [me] weave it into the day in a way that's natural," says Stoner.
