It was really interesting because Josephine was my first trainer, and she comes from a bit of a CrossFit background in power lifting. So she helped me shed a lot of body weight and to start to strengthen my skeletal muscles and build lean muscle. Then in Madrid, I had a trainer named Rafa and he was also a bit of a CrossFit guy, but as a male, he also was a bit of a heavier lifter, so he started to get my body lifting heavier weights. Then of course, in Budapest, I had Adam. He comes from a bodybuilding background.”

9 Amazing Bodies from Avatar Films

Here's how the Naʼvi stay fit.

Avatar is one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time. And for all the reasons why—the special effects, the love story, the majesty of James Cameron's vision—one often overlooked is the sheer athleticism of the actors. The franchise is about conflicts between humans and an alien race on the planet Pandora, and much of the action includes the Na'vi or humans running, jumping or flying. How does the cast that includes A-listers like Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver stay so fit? Read on.

1. Zoe Saldana

London,,United,Kingdom,-,December,04,,2022:,Zoe,Saldana,AttendsShutterstock

Zoe Saldana plays the female lead character, Neytiri. She shared her diet secrets with Byrdie. “Nutrition is super important in my life. It always has been. These days, I’m really heavy into having a green juice in the morning because it’s hard for me to have a balanced meal sometimes as a working mom. I’m a professional; I’m working all the time. I want to make sure that I get my greens in, so I do that every day, and it helps me a great deal. But I try to be balanced. I don’t like hearing, ‘Oh, I’m doing this diet, or I’m doing that diet.’ I like when people use words like ‘my lifestyle.’ When we use the word ‘diet,’ we’re preparing ourselves for a big sacrifice that we know, the older we get, we’re going to be too weak to fulfill. We just end up crashing and defeating ourselves. So I like telling myself that I’m not doing a diet, that this is my lifestyle, and I’m choosing to have a balanced meal. I don’t like having zero carbs or all protein. I like getting all the nutrition that my body needs so that it can heal itself naturally.”

2. Michelle Rodriguez

Los,Angeles,,Ca.,March,26,,2023:,Michelle,Rodriguez,At,TheShutterstock

Michelle Rodriguez appeared in the first film as Trudy Chacon. She shared her skincare secrets with Beauty Logic Blog. "My must-have beauty product is my moisturizer. I care more about my skin and its maintenance than I do covering it up. I cover my blemishes when I go out on the town with some tea tree oil to disinfect them, and then I'll put on an oil-free cover up under my eyes if I didn't sleep. After that I will apply a little lip stain on the cheeks (if I've neglected my weekly vitamin intake) for a fresh complexion. I'll put a little mascara, but that sums it up.”

3. Sam Worthington

Los,Angeles,-,Dec,12:,Sam,Worthington,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Sam Worthington played Jake Sully in the first two films. Despite all his success, Worthington wants to stay humble and live a low-key lifestyle. “My life is still the same,” he said to The Telegraph. “There is a fantastical element to my job because there is loads of glitz and glam attached to it. But I don’t like all that, I didn’t get into this to have my photo taken. If I wanted to be famous I would go on Big Brother.”

4. Sigourney Weaver

Los,Angeles,-,Oct,21:,Sigourney,Weaver,At,The,CallShutterstock

Sigourney Weaver played Dr. Grace Agustine in the first movie, and Kiri Sully in the second. She tells InStyle that being prepared is one of her biggest pieces of acting advice. "You've got to do your work ahead of time," she says. "Then you just go for it. You jump off the cliff."

5. Kate Winslet

London,,United,Kingdom,-,May,14,,2023:,Kate,Winslet,AttendsShutterstock

Kate Winslet played Ronal in the second film. She opened up about eating a plant-based diet and loving juicing to MindFood.com. “Our fridge is always full of spinach, kale, cucumbers. I’m vegetarian and my husband is vegan, so there’s a lot of plant-based focus in our home. My husband turning vegan is relatively recent, so that’s been a really fun education because you have to learn to be a little more inventive with foods.”

6. Stephen Lang

Los,Angeles,-,Dec,12:,Stephen,Lang,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Stephen Lang played Miles Quarich in both films. He shared his approach to fitness in an interview with Men’s Health. "At this point in my life, What's important to me is flexibility, stamina, and strength. And I've added one other thing to that, which is alignment.”

7. Edie Falco

New,York,,Ny,-,October,22,,2018:,Edie,Falco,WearingShutterstock

Edie Falco played Frances Ardmore in the second film. She is known for following a vegetarian diet for years, and recently became vegan. Falco says to The Guardian that this impacted her time on The Sopranos, because her character made a lot of Italian food. “If you watch the scenes in the show where I’m supposed to be cooking, you’ll see the camera never showed my hands, because I have no idea how to do that. That food is not even the kinda stuff I eat. I was vegetarian on the show and I became vegan in the past 10 years.”

8. Matt Gerald

Los,Angeles,-,Dec,12:,Matt,Gerald,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Matt Gerald played Lyle Wainfleet in both films. He talked about how he chooses roles to play with The Action Elite. “When considering a role, I like to ask a few specific questions. 1) Is the piece well-written? 2) Is the character well-rounded with meaningful impact? 3) Does the project shoot in either Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, New York, New Orleans, or London? Yes to any two of these questions will generally suffice.”

9. Joel David Moore

Los,Angeles,-,Dec,12:,Joel,David,Moore,Arrives,ForShutterstock

Joel David Moore played Dr. Norm Spellman in both films. Ahead of the second film, he talked about his hopes for the franchise with People. "It's not about my small part of this big machine, it's about everybody coming together and finding the joy of filmmaking in a hybrid between tech and emotional quality. The third film is going to be even more [emotional]. We're just piling on every time with the emotions because every time that you take that next step with that family, it's going to be a more emotional journey. And the beautiful thing about that is Jim [Cameron] is never going to leave a question unanswered."

The Haunting of Hill House kicked off Mike Flanagan's streak of supernatural horror in terrific fashion. It was gorgeous. Frightening. And it starred some of the most appealing actors ever to be scared stiff. How do they stay so fit? Flanagan's fave Carla Gugino loves yoga. Oliver Jackson-Cohen keeps his skincare routine simple. And Kate Siegel has a special trick she uses to center herself in each scene. Read on to discover how these celebs stay centered.

1. Michiel Huisman

Michel Huisman played the older Steven Crain. He shared his fitness secrets in an interview with InStyle. "I work out on playgrounds at 6 in the morning," he says. "I did work with a trainer for a long time but not anymore. I don't have time for it, so I just do it wherever I can. Body weight."

2. Carla Gugino

Carla Gugino played Olivia Crain. She shared her go-to exercises in an interview with Coveteur. “I’ve been doing yoga since I was 13. It’s great because I can do it in a hotel room anywhere I am. I’m really into Barre3 in the West Village, it’s such a kick-ass class. If I’m in New York I'm doing Barre3 and SoulCycle. If I’m in L.A., I’m hiking and swimming.”

3. Henry Thomas

Los,Angeles,-,Sep,13:,Henry,Thomas,At,The,2019Shutterstock

Henry Thomas played the younger Hugh Crain. He has been acting since he was young, and talked about having to cut off his mother from managing his career to The DailyMail. “I felt a bit of pressure to not fully invest myself in that world and to stay grounded in home life. Then my mum became critical, so when I was getting supporting roles she would say ‘I don’t know why you’re not on the poster. Talk to your people. It was conflicting. But by the time I was 17 I had frozen them out and I said: ‘I’m going to do it and I don’t need your help and you’re just holding me back.’”

4. Oliver Jackson-Cohen

"60 Years Of James Bond" - ArrivalsKate Green/Getty Images

Oliver Jackson-Cohen played older Luke Crain. He shared his skincare routine in an interview with GQ. “I try to keep my skincare as simple as possible,” he said. “I don’t wash my face with anything apart from water. In the winter, once out of the shower, I will occasionally spray Valmont Hydrating Fluid if it's particularly dry, followed by Ceramiracle First Light Serum. It’s very hydrating so I don’t always need a moisturiser. If I do, Crème De La Mer moisturising cream has been a long staple and is excellent.”

5. Kate Siegel

Kate Siegel played the older Theo Crain on the show. She shared her secrets for staying calm on sets with Collider. “Anything that puts me more in my head separates me from the moment-to-moment reality of acting, so any kind of meditation or things like that puts me more into my head. And so the things I like to do are kind of two-fold. One is, that part of my brain that's always kind of fumbling with the Rubik's Cube of the scene, I think is beneficial. I love her. I used to hate her, but now I love her, and so what I'll do is I'll give her something arbitrary to think about."

6. Victoria Pedretti

Vanity Fair Campaign Hollywood and TikTok Celebrate Vanities: A Night For Young Hollywood - ArrivalsJerod Harris/Getty Images

Victoria Pedretti played the older Nell Crain Vance on the show. She shared her favorite self-care rituals with Byrdie. “I do yoga, for sure. I'm not necessarily working to gain a tremendous amount of muscle. I do yoga because I want to have access to my body for a long time. I've also been working on doing different forms of facial massage because I use my face a lot in my work. Doing these habits has a large effect on my mental health. I think working on our minds without working on our bodies is only doing half the work.”

7. Annabeth Gish

Annabeth Gish played Clara Dudley on the show. She revealed to Sportify It that she does a lot of at-home workouts. “My Peleton changed my world. I don’t have to park. I can make dinner and workout while it’s cooking. I can workout whenever I want. We can parent and workout in our home. Even with that, I do yoga. I hike. We take our dogs for a work all the time. I workout 4-5 days a week, not every day. Having the time to workout is a luxury, but we also make it a priority.”

Faith Hill

Faith Hill played Margaret Dutton on 1883. She talked about her wellness secrets in an interview with SELF. "Some days it's harder to get myself moving than others, but it has such a positive impact on my day. I have more energy throughout the day and feel better overall. I also try to drink 70 to 90 ounces of water a day. It is so good for you, inside and out."

Kylie Rogers

Kylie Rogers plays young Beth Dutton on Yellowstone. She talked about her love of acting in an interview with Schon Magazine. “I’m still so passionate about acting and my passion is still just the same as when I was a kid, when I was just like, ‘Let’s make movies!’ [Laughter] I’m genuinely so excited about everything every day. But, in terms of my process, I am now, obviously, more capable of understanding the characters, what they’re going through, and the emotions they’re feeling. I can understand more in-depth what’s going on there and why they’re like that. Whereas, when I was a kid, I would just try to and I’d be like, ‘Oh, she’s sad in this scene,’ you know what I mean? But, I wouldn’t fully understand why she was sad. I’ve definitely been able to grasp a good understanding of characters.

Hassie Harrison

Hassie Harrison plays Laramie on Yellowstone. She shared her wellness routine in an interview with Modeliste Magazine. “I take a lot of walks to exercise my body, spend time with friends and family to fill my heart, read and listen to audiobooks and podcasts to stay informed and make sure to get a lot of vitamin D! As an extra bonus, I also love a good facemask.”

Piper Parebo

Piper Perabo arrives to the premier of Season 5 of "Yellowstone."

Noam Galai/Getty Images

Piper Perabo plays Summer Higgins on Yellowstone. She talked about the importance of having confidence in an interview with Into The Gloss. “I think for myself, what shines through the best is when you feel good about yourself, you know what I mean? Confidence. It comes from a psychological place: how you feel about yourself and what you want to put out there initially, and then after that, I think it comes from a nutritional place—what you eat really affects how you look, and the better you are to your body, the better you feel, and the better you look, and the better you feel about how you look.”

Jennifer Landon

Jennifer Landon plays Teeter on Yellowstone. In an interview with Naluda Magazine, she says that learning to fail was the best advice she’s received. “I was someone who didn’t try very much because I had a high batting average and was very afraid of failure. This didn’t allow me to work and grow. Learning to fail is still very hard for me, and it’s been at times the most freeing thing on earth. If I were to give advice, I would say, fuck talent – just do what you want and then do it again, and again, and again. The people I know who tried and failed the most are the most successful. And successful in every way in my book.”

Lainey Wilson

Singer Lainey Wilson plays Abby on Yellowstone. In an interview with Delish, she talked about how meal prepping helps her eat better. “I will say I feel like I’m becoming a little bit more prepared than I used to be,” she said. “I really do enjoy meal prepping and having things handy, because I feel like when you don’t have those things handy, that’s when you mess up and that’s when you eat something that makes you feel bad.”

Luke Grimes

Luke Grimes plays Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone. In an interview with Men’s Health, he talked about the importance of working out. “Gyms, for me, are more about the mental aspect of it than making sure I look good with my shirt off or whatever,” Grimes explained. “I mean, of course, I’d like to look good with my shirt off, but we all would. If I go a couple weeks without working out, I start to get real dark. So I have to — I just have to. I’m 40 years old now, so I know I have to get it done.”

Cole Hauser

Cole Hauser plays Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone. On the show, he does a lot of horseback riding, and it’s helped keep him in shape. Hauser talked about riding in an interview with GQ. “I grew up in Oregon riding, so from four to seven years old, I was on a horse. Now, doing Yellowstone for six months at a time, you get in horse-shape.”

Wes Bentley

Wes Bentley stars as Jamie Dutton on Yellowstone. He is open about being sober and his past struggles with addiction. Bentley talked about how he got clean and his desire to help others who are struggling in an interview with Men’s Health. “The way I attacked it was by being positive—I’m just gonna go talk about it to everybody and try to help others and heal that shame by doing something.”

Tim McGraw

Tim McGraw played James Dillard Dutton in 1883. In an interview with Men’s Journal, McGraw talked about the impotence of fitness in his life. "In my early 40s, when I really started taking it seriously, I started running a lot. That’s the first thing I started doing, and I found that made a big difference for me. It just started my day out better. I just realized how much it raised the bar on everything that I did. It raised the bar on my career. It raised the bar on my relationships with my friends. It just made me feel better, gave me a better mental outlook on everything that I was doing."

Ryan Bingham

Ryan Bingham plays Walker on Yellowstone. He talked about the importance of following your dreams in an interview with Arizona Foothills Magazine. “I just know that for me it was about trusting my gut. When you’re young and you’re out on your own, you have no home, no family; there’s nothing left to lose. I was forced to do what I had to out of survival. Sometimes it wasn’t the safest bet. Many times it didn’t work out and I learned the hard way. But I figured out where to go and not go, do and not do.”

The Terminator franchise is remarkable, not just because it made a star of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his catchphrase, but because it has allowed for strong roles for strong women—not a given in every action movie. From the first two films, directed by James Cameron, to the sequels (which vary in quality), the casts in all have been committed to selling the ideas behind the action, and dedicated to fitness. Here's how they remain well.

1. Emilia Clarke

Los,Angeles,-,Sep,22:,Emilia,Clarke,At,The,PrimetimeShutterstock

Emilia Clarke played Sarah Connor in the film, Genisys. She has amazing skin, and shared her routine with Byrdie. "My morning and nighttime routines are really very similar. In the evening, I might do a double cleanse depending on how much makeup either I or someone else has put on my skin. I also put more moisturizing cream on my face at night than I do in the daytime. In the morning, if I have a big day or I have some stuff coming up, I also do a sheet mask and use a face roller. I keep all of those things in the fridge, which always helps."

2. Linda Hamilton

Las,Vegas,-,Apr,04:,Linda,Hamilton,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Linda Hamilton is the actress most associated with the role of Sarah Connor. She originated the role in the first film, and has returned in three subsequent ones. In an essay for InStyle, she talked about working and training for the film Dark Fate. “On the film we worked a lot of six-day weeks; even if we had a weekend off, there was probably a scuba lesson or military training. When I did have a day off, I’d sleep 20 hours. I’d rest my body and read my books to take my mind elsewhere. Still, the results are different, you know? It’s disappointing that you can work as hard and not look the same. But then you just think, ‘I cannot be what I was.’ It took me a while to just go, ‘Hmm, fuck that! Let’s go with what we’ve got and make it as fantastic as possible.’ I’d never felt like a badass until I made this film.”

3. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Shutterstock

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the titular character, also known as the T-800, in all of the films. He opened up about his diet secrets in an interview. “The way you do it is burning more calories every day than you eat,” he says. “So take the number 2,000. You have 2,000 calories that you eat every day, but you burn off 2,500 calories every day. And now you have a negative of 500 calories. And every day you will start slowly going down with the body weight and down with the body fat. And the first place it will go is at the stomach.”

4. Sam Worthington

Los,Angeles,-,Dec,12:,Sam,Worthington,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

She Does Squats

Stankovic does squats to keep herself in shape, as you can see in her Instagram video. Piedmont says that this exercise has a lot of health benefits. “Whether you’re hoping to tone your muscles, strengthen your core or just improve overall health, squats are one of the best exercises you can do. Although the movements appear relatively simple, squats can take time to master. Joel Hardwick, ACSM EP-C, EIM2, an exercise physiologist at Piedmont Atlanta Fitness Center, says practice will pay off…Hardwick explains that squats are a compound, multi-joint movement, which means they exercise several muscle groups. When you perform a squat, you work your calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes, core and part of your back.”

She Does Lunges

Stankovic is also seen doing lunges in her Instagram video. The Mayo Clinic reports that lunges are very beneficial to do. “The lunge is a body resistance exercise that works the leg muscles. Specifically, the lunge targets the quadriceps and the hamstring muscles in the thigh, the gluteal muscles in the buttock, and to a lesser extent, the lower leg muscles. The lunge is a great conditioning exercise for many sports, especially those that involve lunging movements, such as tennis, basketball or soccer.”

She Does Cardio

Stankovic likes to do cardio workouts to keep herself in shape. She shared this video of herself doing fast box jumps in different directions on Instagram. Stankovic captioned it, “Morning cardio challenge.” Cardio exercises have a lot of benefits. Over time, regular cardio exercise allows your muscles to adapt to an increased workload, making regular activities seem easier.”

She Does Pilates

Stankovic shares a lot of her favorite workouts in an Instagram story highlight. In some of the stories, she is seen doing Pilates exercises on a reformer. Pilates is very beneficial. The Cleveland Clinic says, “One of the reasons Pilates is such a good workout is that it specifically focuses on building core strength.”

She Strength Trains

Stankovic likes to strength train to keep herself in shape. She shared this Instagram story of herself using dumbbells. ACE Fitness says that strength training and using weights has a lot of health benefits. “Strength training with heavy weights improves muscle definition. Muscle definition occurs as the result of muscles remaining in a state of semi-contraction and heavy strength training recruits the larger type II muscle fibers responsible for a muscle’s appearance.”

So what’s in her routine? From deadlifts to hip thrusts, here’s how French sculpts her powerhouse physique.

She Does Deadlifts

French is seen doing deadlifts in her Instagram post. This exercise has a lot of benefits. NASM says, “A Romanian deadlift is a hip-hinge pattern that works the hamstrings and glutes. It is a form of deadlift with noticeably less bend in the knee, leading to greater hamstring engagement than traditional deadlifts. The move was introduced to the masses in the 90s by Romanian weightlifter Nicu Vlad (an Olympic and World Weightlifting champion) and his coach Dragomir Cioroslan. The two invented the move to help Nicu strengthen his back for the clean and jerk. Today, RDLs are commonly used to strengthen the posterior chain, using the core muscles to stabilize and the hamstrings and glutes to drive the movement.”

She Does Lunges

Another exercise that French is seen doing in her Instagram post is lunges. NASM says that they are very beneficial. “The lunge is a versatile, simple and effective movement for lower body training. Various positions, planes of motion and speeds can all yield different training adaptations for the exerciser. Lunges are the gift that keeps on giving!”

She Does Squats

French is seen doing squats in her Instagram video. According to The Cleveland Clinic, squats are very beneficial. “Here’s a quick look at the many benefits of squats, also known as bodyweight squats or air squats: Works major muscle groups. Burns calories. Strengthens your core. Improves lower body strength. Enhances stability and balance. Betters your posture.”

According to The Mayo Clinic, hamstring curls are very beneficial. “The seated hamstring curl is an exercise you can do with a weight machine to work the muscles in the back of the thigh. As the name implies, the seated hamstring curl targets the hamstring muscles here in the back of the thigh. Strong hamstring muscles help to protect your ligaments in the knee.”

She Does Hip Thrusts

French shared this video on Instagram of herself doing hip thrusts. She captioned it, “Hip Thrusts are no doubt one of the best exercises for building your Glutes but of course with any exercise, the form has to be correct for you to see the maximum benefits…✖️ Feet too far forwards will engage your hamstrings more ✖️ Feet too close to you will engage your quads more ✔️ Feet placed so your calves are vertical will engage your glutes more.”
