"I was so unhappy and hated my body." Now, she has a balanced approach to health. "One day I woke up and realized I had to get better for myself," she said. "I started going to the gym, eating normally, and now I'm so confident with my body."

Demi has mastered the art of acceptance, especially when it comes to aging. “Because you know, things do change,” she told W. “The biggest difference, I think, is that I’m not in nearly as good shape physically as I have been before, and I have skin going in a direction that I would prefer it not go. There are things that just come with getting older. But I think my big mantra for this year is about acceptance. I was reading this book that was written around 1919, if I am remembering correctly, and it was very of its day. It was discussing all the ‘female’ concerns. There were some horrific suggestions on how to take care of yourself, including putting some kind of acid on your skin. But there was one thing I took away, because I think it’s true—the author said not to frown because at a certain point it will stick. Her approach?"Not being defined by a number and instead being defined by my experience. You hit 59 and you're already thinking, 'Well, I'm going to be 60.' It feels very liberating. When I think of my grandmother at 60, she in a way seemed to be already resigned to being old. But I feel, in so many ways, more alive and present than ever."

Demi reveals that she used to be totally obsessed with her body. "I couldn't stop exercising…I would be on display again, and all I could think about was my body, my body, my body…I doubled down on my already over-the-top exercise routine. I cut out carbs, I ran and I biked and I worked out on every machine imaginable," she wrote in her 2019 autobiography, Inside Out. She shifted her priorities after G.I. Jane. "I had reached my limit," she said. “When I got home to Idaho, I had an epiphany in the shower one day: I just need to be my natural size."

3. Enjoy the Perks of Coffee

Demi doesn’t drink alcohol anymore, but she still loves drinking coffee. According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are several benefits of drinking coffee in moderation. “It acts on your brain to improve memory, mood, reaction times, and mental function,” they say, citing a study finding that caffeine can improve endurance and performance during exercise. It’s hard to believe that Kerry Washington is celebrating her 48th birthday on January 31. The star has been in the public eye since her breakout role as Chenille Reynolds in the 2001 film Save the Last Dance but hasn’t seemed to age much in the 24 years since. Kerry exercises a lot, mixing up her workouts. “I'm a big Pilates girl and I love to hike,” she told ELLE. “You don’t even want to be in your own body when [you] show up at the gym—I didn’t for years,” she added to Women’s Health. “As women, we live in this culture where it’s like, ‘You have to fix this.’ Pilates has allowed me to be focused on my appearance and my health in ways that are not abusive or critical.” Kerry added to Allure that she doesn’t view exercise as a chore. “I love to work out. It’s really important to me; it’s part of the culture of my family,” she said. She also loves SoulCycle, yoga, Peloton classes, dance classes, Gyrotonic training, and the elliptical machine. “I do different things, but I’m most obsessed with water aerobics,” she said. “Now I do it with my friends on the weekends.”

Kerry has a healthy and balanced approach to food. “In general in life I try to live it, not diet,” she told People. “I think that’s hard when you’re restricting a lot. So I try to take it easy on a daily basis and do what’s going to make me feel good.” Nonna Gleyzer, one of her Pilates trainers, revealed to Shape that the actress “has always been an extremely healthy eater” and “eats a lot of vegan products, with little clean meals throughout the day.”

Kerry enjoys drinking her nutrients. She told ELLE that she is super into nutritionist Kim Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie, packed with spinach, celery, lemon juice, cilantro, and more. “I try to keep it consistent year-round,” Washington said. Gleyzer added to Shape that she hydrates with coconut water. “She loves coconut water, which gives her potassium and important electrolytes. With the long hours she works, there’s really no room for her to play around. She needs to be in the best shape every single day, and she definitely is.”

“The things my mother always stressed were to drink a lot of water and get a lot of rest, which I used to roll my eyes at,” she told Oprah Magazine. “Now I think she’s a genius. Health and wellness really are the sources of beauty.”

You won’t find the star drinking her calories in the form of alcohol. “I’m also not a drinker,” Kerry confessed Eto lle. “I love a drink occasionally, but I wouldn’t be able to handle it. You see one sip, but I have to drink three cups to get the scene done,” she said. “I tend to be a ‘when in Rome drinker.’ When I’m traveling, I drink what they have there or I’ll get a special cocktail.”

Ashy avoids processed sugar, “like the plague!” she reveals in one of her eating plans. “It is NOT GOOD FOR YOU! In fact, processed sugars are completely empty of any benefit to our body. Therefore look for food that is high in the nutrients that your body craves. *Side Note: The body changes sugar into 2 to 5 times more fat in the bloodstream than it does starch.”

Good Fats – Avocado, Nuts, Oil

“Educate yourself as much as you can on good fats versus bad fats,” Ashy continues. “We need to eat good fats such as avocado, nuts and oily sh to give our bodies access to vital Omega acids and essential vitamins, but need to avoid trans fats that influence all types of health problems. Olive oil is also a great fat when used cold, but steer clear of vegetable oil.”

Clean, Whole Foods

Ashy’s diet consists of “clean, whole foods,” to operate the body at its fat-burning best. “Each one of my meals combines a balanced serving of vital carbohydrates, protein, and good fats. Although I do outline the importance of limiting our carbohydrate intake, it is important to note that I also choose particular carbohydrates to eat. Complex carbohydrates are an important source of energy & we couldn’t operate properly without them. They hold vitamins & minerals, and can be found in milk, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and beans for example,” she says. She also makes sure to eat a lot of protein, which “plays an important role in all its forms. It is needed by our body to repair, rebuild, replenish and maintain healthy muscles and organs. Every single one of our cells requires protein to operate, and it is particularly important in kick-starting our liver functions and controlling our metabolism.”

Upside Down Pyramid Meals

Ashy designs her meals like an upside-down pyramid. “A common misconception” is that “our largest meal should be dinner,” Ashy maintains. “This is when our bodies our slowing down and food begins to ‘sit’ in our bodies, rather than being transformed into the energy it needs. It is an even bigger misconception that skipping breakfast altogether will help us lose weight. When our bodies are most active is when we should be feeding them with the highest amounts of nutrients – ie. before we start the day!I like to look at my eating day like an upside-down pyramid. I start my day with a big breakfast & work gradually into smaller meals by the time dinner arrives.”

Small, Frequent Meals

Ashy is all about small, frequent meals. She feeds herself “every 2-3 hours” to keep her metabolism going throughout the day. “If you do not eat, your body will go into starvation mode & will actually STORE FAT!” she says.
