It’s hard to believe that Kerry Washington is celebrating her 48th birthday on January 31. The star has been in the public eye since her breakout role as Chenille Reynolds in the 2001 film Save the Last Dance but hasn’t seemed to age much in the 24 years since. What is her secret to looking and feeling young? Here are her top secrets for longevity.

Exercise

Kerry exercises a lot, mixing up her workouts. “I'm a big Pilates girl and I love to hike,” she told ELLE. “You don’t even want to be in your own body when [you] show up at the gym—I didn’t for years,” she added to Women’s Health. “As women, we live in this culture where it’s like, ‘You have to fix this.’ Pilates has allowed me to be focused on my appearance and my health in ways that are not abusive or critical.” Kerry added to Allure that she doesn’t view exercise as a chore. “I love to work out. It’s really important to me; it’s part of the culture of my family,” she said. She also loves SoulCycle, yoga, Peloton classes, dance classes, Gyrotonic training, and the elliptical machine. “I do different things, but I’m most obsessed with water aerobics,” she said. “Now I do it with my friends on the weekends.”

Balanced Diet

Kerry has a healthy and balanced approach to food. “In general in life I try to live it, not diet,” she told People. “I think that’s hard when you’re restricting a lot. So I try to take it easy on a daily basis and do what’s going to make me feel good.” Nonna Gleyzer, one of her Pilates trainers, revealed to Shape that the actress “has always been an extremely healthy eater” and “eats a lot of vegan products, with little clean meals throughout the day.”

Nutrient Dense Drinks

Kerry enjoys drinking her nutrients. She told ELLE that she is super into nutritionist Kim Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie, packed with spinach, celery, lemon juice, cilantro, and more. “I try to keep it consistent year-round,” Washington said. Gleyzer added to Shape that she hydrates with coconut water. “She loves coconut water, which gives her potassium and important electrolytes. With the long hours she works, there’s really no room for her to play around. She needs to be in the best shape every single day, and she definitely is.”

Hydration and Rest

“The things my mother always stressed were to drink a lot of water and get a lot of rest, which I used to roll my eyes at,” she told Oprah Magazine. “Now I think she’s a genius. Health and wellness really are the sources of beauty.”

Keeping Alcohol to a Minimum

You won’t find the star drinking her calories in the form of alcohol. “I’m also not a drinker,” Kerry confessed Eto lle. “I love a drink occasionally, but I wouldn’t be able to handle it. You see one sip, but I have to drink three cups to get the scene done,” she said. “I tend to be a ‘when in Rome drinker.’ When I’m traveling, I drink what they have there or I’ll get a special cocktail.”

1. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez is known for her ageless looks, and shared some of her secrets in an interview with InStyle. "My mom and aunts swear by olive oil to deliver a glow. The hero ingredient in JLo Beauty is a modernized version of olive oil, called the Olive Complex. It's a combination of ingredients derived from extra-virgin olive oil, fermented oil, leaf extract, and squalane. It gives the skin this weightless, all-day hydration, antioxidant protection, and an ageless radiance. And it doesn't smell like salad dressing

2. Salma Hayek

For Salma Hayek, skincare is a daily thing. "I've never gone to bed without washing my face,” she told InStyle. “Never in my life. Even if I'm sick, tired — heck, even if I was drunk! I might forget to take off the dress, the shoes, and the jewelry, but not the makeup. It's second nature."

3. Halle Berry

27th Annual Critics Choice Awards - ArrivalsAxelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

For Halle Berry, skincare is all about keeping her skin a little hydrated. "No matter what age you are, you always look a little better when your skin is a little dewy, not too powdery,” she explained to InStyle. I went through phases where all I wanted to do was be matte and powdered up, but then I found it wasn't the best look for me. Before I do my makeup, I spray my face with rosewater and let that sink in. It keeps my makeup looking very dewy, and I feel like it just makes me look more youthful, alive, and fresh."

4. Sarah Jessica Parker

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - July 14, 2021James Devaney/GC Images

For Sarah Jessica Parker, skincare is all about hydration. "The thing I'm most diligent about is washing my face," she told InStyle. "I say to my husband, 'Oh, I'm so tired, Matthew! I don't want to wash my face.' He's like, 'Why do you need to?' He doesn't get it. I also always wear moisturizer and lip balm."

5. Kelly Ripa

TV host and actress, Kelly Ripa broke down her anti-aging secrets to InStyle. She says that each morning, she takes care of her skin. “My day starts around 5 a.m.," she says. "I'm way into jade and rose quartz face rollers, so I put them in a bowl of ice and literally sit there and roll my face until I'm awake. But there's nothing like a good cup of coffee."

6. Gabrielle Union

Premiere Of Disney's "Cheaper By The Dozen"Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

Gabrielle Union has become known for her amazing skin. She shared some of her tips in an interview with Byrdie. "I do drink a gallon of water a day. I started that in my mid to late 30s. So for a good 10 years, I've been drinking a gallon of water a day. It makes a difference for hair, skin, nails, all of it.”

7. Cindy Crawford

Premiere Of "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical" At Hollywood Pantages TheatreRodin Eckenroth/Getty Images

Cindy Crawford has maintained her supermodel good looks into her 50s. She even had her own line of skincare. "It's never too early, and never too late, to start taking care of your skin,” Crawford told Byrdie. “Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh taught me the daytime is about protecting your skin and then the nighttime is about restoring it. I have learned that it's like working out. You work out once—you don't really see a big difference. But if you work out regularly for years, you do. I think skincare is the same way. So I've made taking care of my skin part of my routine.”

8. Padma Lakshmi

Glossier, Cherry Bombe And The Cinema Society Host A Special Screening Of "Taste The Nation" Season TwoDia Dipasupil/Getty Images

TV host Padma Lakshmi is surrounded by food. And this includes her skincare. “The biggest thing for skin, and it doesn't cost a lot of money, is honey,” she revealed to Byrdie. “When I used to travel and I didn't have a lot of money, I would always find honey on the breakfast tray at a hotel or something. You just wash and cleanse your skin, take all the makeup off, pat your skin dry, and then slather honey all over your face, avoiding the delicate eye area. And then you just tap your fingers on your face, almost like you're playing piano on your skin. And what that does is pull out the impurities in your pores without upsetting the pH balance.”

9. Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington shared some of her beauty secrets in an interview with Allure. She says that she loves products with hyaluronic acid, and cites a concealer and gel-cream from Neutrogena as favorites. “It has hyaluronic acid in the center,” she says of the concealer. “So when you use it, you’re moisturizing while you’re covering. It’s great for under-eyes and laugh lines. I have spots like anybody else, particularly from hormones from pregnancy and then nursing. I use concealer to help along the way while they’re fading.” Washington also explains about the gel-cream, “I love moisturizers that do double duty. This one contains hyaluronic acid. I haven’t put any [fillers] on the inside yet, but I’m digging hyaluronic acid on the outside. I think it’s God’s gift to women.”

10. Nicole Kidman

Los Angeles Premiere Of Amazon Studios' "Being The Ricardos" - Red CarpetRich Fury/Getty Images

One of Nicole Kidman’s biggest skincare secrets is sun protection. “I’m so outdoorsy,” she told Byrdie. “I love playing tennis, and I love working out outdoors. I love going for a run and swimming, and I just want to be able to do all of that and protect my skin because I get burnt. So having the access to Neutrogena’s skincare and suncare is fantastic for me. And I know a lot about it because I’ve researched it; I’ve been educated; I have enormous knowledge about it now. I use vitamin C too because that does give you some protection long-term.”

11. Tracee Ellis Ross

CultureCon NYC '22Steven Ferdman/Getty Images

Tracee Ellis Ross broke down her skincare routine to Vogue. My skincare routine is extensive. “At night, if I’ve worn make-up when I’m working, I use Bioderma to remove my make-up. Then I use CosMedix Benefit Clean, which is a bit of a soapy cleanser, and I use it with a mitt. After that I do a Terri Lawton Serum Toner. Usually at night, I’ll apply the Retrouvé Intensive – it’s a really hydrating moisturiser – and then I put Biologique Recherche T.E.W.L. serum over that. In the morning, I use Retrouvé Gentle Cleanser, and while it’s on my face I use the Pause Well-Aging Gua Sha for about three minutes. After I’ve rinsed the cleanser off with a warm washcloth, I put the Biologique oil on my face, and then use the the brand’s Cryo Sticks – they look like little teardrops and I keep them in the fridge. I do about two minutes on my face with them.”

1. She Does This First Thing in the Morning

“I’ve been really trying to practice the Oprah Winfrey ritual: I check in with gratitude and grace when I wake up. I can be in a little bit of a state of overwhelm and panic if I don’t start out being connected to grace and gratitude,” she told Glamour. "Other ways I reach out to others to express gratitude is to open doors for others, give compliments, say “hello” or “have a nice day,” give a warm hug, pay for a stranger’s meal or coffee, donate to a charity or send cards to loved ones for no particular reason. Other ways I connect to internal awareness is by surrounding myself with inspirational quotes, regular meditation, yoga, spending time in nature and journaling about how I want to feel and what I want to do in order to achieve those feelings," Dana Stewart is a licensed clinical social worker in Behavioral Health in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, writes in the Mayo Clinic.

2. She Uses Sunscreen

71st Emmy Awards - ArrivalsFrazer Harrison/Getty Images

Washington has a good tip if you have kids. “A lot of the research that we’ve seen shows that it’s important to put sunscreen on your kids, but as one of the most important things we can do as parents and moms is apply sunscreen to ourselves,” she says. “That’s the act that makes kids the sun protectors of themselves. They’re much less resistant to having the sunscreen when they see us put it on ourselves first, and more likely to do it for their whole life.”

3. She Does Yoga

73rd Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsRich Fury/Getty Images

Washington shared video her doing Child's Pose, Happy Baby, Cat Cow, and other yoga poses. “The child's pose helps to stretch your back and muscles around your hips. In this pose, kneel and sit on your knees. Lean forward, keeping your buttocks on your heels, and rest your forehead on the floor. Move your arms so they're next to your legs, palms facing up. Inhale and exhale, slowly and deeply, for at least eight breaths,” says the Mayo Clinic.

4. She Likes Deep Tissue Massages

“Massage is generally considered part of complementary and integrative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations,” reports the Mayo Clinic. “Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension.”

5. She’s Done Pilates

72nd Annual Tony Awards - ArrivalsJamie McCarthy/Getty Images

"I've never met anybody who's taken Pilates and doesn't understand their own body better afterward," she told Women’s Health. "As women, we live in this culture where it's like, 'You have to fix this.' Pilates has allowed me to be focused on my appearance and my health in ways that are not abusive or critical."

6. She’s Inspired by Trailblazers

28th Screen Actors Guild Awards - Red CarpetDimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

Washington admires “Jane Fonda, Cicely Tyson, and Diahann Carroll—those women are my lighthouses. Because their light was shining ahead, I knew where to go. They kept showing up for their art and values and that made me feel like I could bring all of myself to my work,” she told Glamour. “If society is telling us to look the other way, and you, as anybody from a disenfranchised community, are saying, 'My story matters,' that is an act of activism.”

Aurate is a female-owned business—founded by Sophie Kahn and Bouchra Ezzahraoui—and Washington is a backer. They first collaborated on something called The Lioness Collection. “I was inspired by the themes of what the lioness means, how lionesses operate, how the lionesses hunt together and nurture their cubs together,” Washington said at the time, to TechCrunch. “There’s no hierarchy among lionesses … They are fierce and ambitious but they also take care of each other.” She added: “I love working with female founders.” “Aurate is style and substance and Kerry is style and substance,” Kahn told TechCrunch. “She’s also an activist, she cares and has a voice. 5 Ways to Look Like Brad Pitt at 59

Here’s how he’s just getting better with age.

Brad Pitt is 59 years old and seems in no danger of losing his title as one of Hollywood’s leading heartthrobs. Benjamin Button references aside, Pitt looks fantastic for being a year shy of 60—so how does it do it? According to the actor, there’s a lot more to it than Hollywood magic and personal trainers, and he just wants to be the best version of himself at any age. “I don’t know about running from aging, but this idea of being more health minded is something I’m interested in,” he says. How does he stay so fit? Read on to see 5 health, wellness, and diet methods Pitt utilizes to look the way he does at 59, and the photos that prove they work.

1. Health and Wellness

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - February 13, 2023James Devaney/GC Images

Pitt’s approach to wellness is to keep things simple and attainable—focusing on common sense over fad diets and workouts. “Trying to stay physical, try to eat healthy a little bit, try to stay creative,” he says, adding that he has cut back on the occasional glass of wine. “I stopped for a while, I’m taking a hiatus, self-induced.”

2. Giving Up Alcohol

Formula 1 Aramco British Grand Prix 2023Gongora/NurPhoto via Getty Images

Pitt now avoids alcohol, which is notoriously bad for health and appearance. “I enjoy wine very, very much, but I just ran it to the ground,” he says. “I had to step away for a minute. And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good. [I] don't want to live that way anymore.” Pitt replaced his wine habit with cranberry juice and sparkling water. “I've got the cleanest urinary tract in all of L.A., I guarantee you! But the terrible thing is I tend to run things into the ground. That's why I've got to make something so calamitous. I've got to run it off a cliff.”

3. Taking Care of His Skin

"BABYLON" UK Premiere – ArrivalsSamir Hussein/WireImage

Pitt gets skincare advice from ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, and ex-girlfriend and Goop mogul Gwyneth Paltrow. “Aniston keeps sending me stuff,” he says. “I haven’t tried [her haircare], but she sent it. She’s all over it, I trust her. Paltrow is all over it too. I’ll call her up, ‘I need a tip’, [then it’s] approved or not approved.” Pitt sometimes dabbles in technology to keep his skin in tip-top shape. “I have a makeup artist friend of 30 years [Jean Black] who’ll always bring new stuff for healthy skin, with more of a skin care rather than a beauty focus, like [LED] masks with red lights. I’ll try but I can’t commit, it’s too much work. During films she’ll keep me relatively healthy, she’ll do a regiment. I want it simple, I think it’s true of most guys.” Pitt has also launched a skincare line called Le Domaine.

4. Embracing His Feelings

"Babylon" Paris Premiere At Le Grand RexMarc Piasecki/WireImage

Pitt says he is no longer running away from his feelings. "I think joy's been a newer discovery, later in life," he says. "I was always moving with the currents, drifting in a way, and onto the next. I think I spent years with a low-grade depression, and it's not until coming to terms with that, trying to embrace all sides of self — the beauty and the ugly — that I've been able to catch those moments of joy."

5. Focusing On Inner Health

Babylon premiere - LondonIan West/PA Images via Getty Images

Pitt helps support his mental and emotional health through creativity and manual labor. “I'm anxious to get to the studio,” he says. “I think it was Picasso who talked about the moment of looking at the subject, and paint hitting canvas, and that is where art happens. For me I'm having a moment of getting to feel emotion at my fingertips. But to get that emotion to clay—I just haven't cracked the surface. And I don't know what's coming. Right now I know the manual labor is good for me, getting to know the expansiveness and limitations of the materials. I've got to start from the bottom, I've got to sweep my floor, you know?”

Bianca makes sure to eat enough protein in order to build more muscle and stay as lean as possible to meet the weight requirement. “It’s been a really cool journey seeing my body develop and transform into this whole different person I never knew I could become,” she said. In her new post she added that she is meal prepping. “I’m soooo all in that im even learning how to cook & meal prep better than ever before,” she writes.

Taking Cold Plunges

As for recovery, cold plunging is part of Bianca’s training regime. Limited research supports the benefits of cold plunges, which may include easing sore muscles, bringing body temperature down, increasing focus, improving sleep, and decreasing inflammation, per the Cleveland Clinic. However, a 2021 study found that cold water immersion therapy promotes post-sport recovery.

Working On Self-Esteem

Positive self-talk is also important. “Of course, I put a lot of pressure on myself, but in the end, I always tell myself that as long as I give my best and I learn from it, any mistake I make is valid,” Bianca explained. “I always try to repeat that to myself that I am valid. I’m here for a reason and there’s nothing I would rather do than be here.”

Brenda enjoys jogging. According to the Mayo Clinic, running is great for cardiovascular health, muscle building, and weight loss. “For every mile run, the average person will burn approximately 100 calories,” they say.

Walking Her Dog

She also takes her dog on long walks. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Dancing

You can also find Brenda dancing to burn calories. Dancing is an excellent workout for many reasons. It builds strength and promotes flexibility, helps you lose weight, and even promotes cardiovascular function. A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine determined that people who engaged in moderate-intensity dancing were 46 percent less likely to develop or die from heart disease than non-dancers. In comparison, moderate-intensity walkers were just 25 percent less likely to suffer heart health issues

Swimming

Brenda spends a lot of time in her swimsuit so it isn’t surprising she loves to swim. According to the CDC, swimming is a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity. Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running, can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. In addition to the many physical benefits, multiple studies support the mental health benefits of swimming.

Hydration

Finally, Brenda hydrates, especially after a long workout or sun exposure. According to the Mayo Clinic, hydration is essential for various reasons. Water helps eliminate waste through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements, keeps your temperature regular, lubricates and cushions joints, and helps protect sensitive tissues.

She Supports Animals

Romani has her own charity, Help Miami Cats. She talked about how she started this in the caption of this Instagram post. “❤️ Guys!!!! I have always loved cats and had many growing up. When I moved to Miami Beach I met a great calico named Chacha and learnt that cats were brought to the city by Mayor Lummus … against rodents. Cats rely on volunteers for their food and water and there’s a huge amount of them. There’s a city program to Spay and neuter with the wonderful @sobecats ladies and the feeding is made official by a City Sanctioned badge, yet new cats keep getting dumped daily sadly and there’s a never ending amount of work, emergencies and so on. I was on a feeding rotation but during the pandemic I was left alone caring for so many as people left town or couldn’t afford feeding anymore …I decided to start my own non profit @helpmiamicats . We feed close to 200 and when Batman got paralyzed took him and other special needs cats under my care … @stevensachs69 with the cat room and the amazing people involved devote their lives to these special souls … My life has changed a lot too … way less spare time, way more sweat and tears and lost the person I had by my side who had sadly other priorities … yet gained so much love from these lovely creatures !!! If you can please get involved in any way … follow @helpmiamicats , share, volunteer, adopt … donate … Only together we can make their world a better place !!! And yes … just me feeding the kitties and talking to them … 🤷🏻♀️👀😆❤️🙌”
