Lily James is an extremely successful actress. She rose to prominence in 2015, when she appeared in Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella. She then appeared in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again in 2018. James’ most notable role was as Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy. James recently enjoyed a beach day, and shared some photos on Instagram. In them, she swam in the ocean in a pale yellow swimsuit. She captioned the post, “Summer lovin’.” How does she stay so fit? Read on to see 5 ways Lily James stays in shape and the photos that prove they work.

1. She Learned New Exercises

To prep for her role in Pam & Tommy, James enlisted trainer, Matt Bevan, to get in shape. He shared her fitness secrets with Harper’s Bazaar. “The first phase of training was based around getting Lily comfortable with key exercises; these helped her to move more efficiently, and meant I knew she was using the correct muscles and had good technique so she would remain injury-free,” Bevan explains. “The exercises were all pretty new to Lily. She had trained a little in the past, and her background in dance meant she was very well coordinated which made training online a lot easier. I would show her an exercise and she would nail it straight away, which I can tell you is not always the case.”

2. She Works Out At Home

Bevan tells Harper’s Bazaar that he had James make a home-gym, so she could continue her workouts. “We slowly amassed a little gym in Lily’s living room and then took that to where she stayed in LA. Long bands, handle bands, mini bands, a couple of pairs of dumbbells, three kettlebells, a Swiss ball and some sliders.”

3. She Takes Care Of Her Skin

James has amazing skin, and she makes sure to take care of it. She shared some of her tips in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “I cleanse, tone, moisturise every day and night,” she says. “And I love, love long baths – with as much bath salts and bubbles and oils as possible.”

4. She Boxes

Hanging,Pink,Womans,Boxing,Gloves,Isolated,On,Pastel,Background.,3dShutterstock

James shared some more of her workouts with Marie Claire. “I did boxing with a really cool guy in LA, which I love too, being physically strong like I could literally beat someone up.” Health Plus Magazine reports that boxing has a lot of benefits. “When you consider the amount of focus required to succeed in boxing, even in boxing training, the fact that it can literally make your brain stronger shouldn’t be surprising. But what’s even deeper than its mental benefits is the aforementioned spiritual engagement and personal enhancement that result from boxing training, both of which can begin before you even throw a punch.”

5. She Runs

James tells Marie Claire that Bevan told her to do a lot of running, usually while she would practice her lines for Pam & Tommy. "He would make me do all my work and reading my script on a running machine.” Valley Oaks Health states, “The positive impacts of a run extend beyond the finish line and into bedtime. Studies show that aerobic exercise such as running can significantly improve the quality of sleep, even for those suffering from insomnia. Running has also been linked to a reduction in daytime drowsiness, meaning you’ll have more energy for your day and less fatigue to fight through.”

1. She Maintains Her Motivation

Staying motivated is crucial for success. With an intense workout plan, it can sometimes be difficult, but she sticks to it. "I think it's probably best to work out in the morning to get it out of the way," Lily said. "My ultimate top tip is to drag yourself, even if you have to roll yourself out of your bed and into a sit-up – it's really not that bad once you start." Lily said she just keeps telling herself “you can do it.” It’s really when you push yourself that the real change happens in your mind and body.

2. She’s Tough and Disciplined

2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards - ArrivalsAxelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

She really dials in, maintaining a strict diet with herself. "I had to be really strict with myself, I knew if I cheated myself with chocolate and wine then it wouldn't work", Lily said referring to her diet for Fast Girls. "I had to give up everything I love. We couldn't drink, eat chocolate, have sweets or desserts. But you know what, I got well into it... It's amazing to see how much better you feel and to see the change in your body."

3. Cardio is Key

Sweat sessions really prepared Lily‘s body for her big roles. "I worked with this amazing trainer, Matt Bevan, who worked with Daisy Ridley as well,” Lily explained. ”He worked me so hard and I got really fit." Her trainer used boxing and running for her cardio. "I felt really athletic, which I hadn’t done for a long time and there was great confidence that came from that... I feel less self-conscious on a beach now. It was really wonderful to feel like that, to feel so in my own body."

4. She’s Consistent With Her Workouts

Lilly really stresses that consistency is key. She explained to Cosmo that preparing for her role in Fast Girls was really intense, teaching her quickly that hard work pays off. "It was very intense – we had about six weeks of training before the film even started," Lily explains. They trained five times a week with regimens including strength training, running, circuit training, and more.

5. She Walks and Bikes Everywhere

“I also just started cycling again,” Lily explained to Shape. “I cycled everywhere when I moved to London, until my bike got stolen. Then I started taking Ubers. Recently, I got my bike back, and that’s been such a gift. It’s my bit of freedom to ride without having any direction stuck in my mind. It helps me stop overthinking and just connect myself to the present.” She informed British Vogue that walking does wonders for her, too.

Lily James played the pop culture icon (and Chicago on Broadway star) Pamela Anderson in the Hulu series, Pam & Tommy. James had to look like Anderson for the role, and she made sure to do so. James just posted a new set of photos from the show on her Instagram story, as Hollywood considers who will get Emmy nominated this year. In one, she posed in a red swimsuit, like Anderson wore on Baywatch. How does she stay so fit? 1. She Works With A Personal Trainer

lily-james-1Lily James/Instagram

In order to prepare for her role as Pamela Anderson, James turned to personal trainer, Matt Bevan, to help her get in shape. She says that Bevan helped her out a lot. “Matt’s workouts changed my life,” she tells Women’s Health. “I felt more energetic, positive, and able to get into the right mindset to get through long filming days and a lot of pressure. I honestly looked forward to every session, which was a huge surprise for me.”

2. She Trains Virtually

lily-james-2Lily James/Instagram

Bevan revealed some of James’ training secrets to Vogue. He says that they did a lot of virtual sessions together, which helped them be consistent. “Virtual training allows a client to take an hour of their day for themselves, even without leaving the house,” Bevan adds.

3. She Eats A Balanced Diet

Detox,Salad,With,Chick,Pea,,Avocado,,Grilled,Tomatoes,And,Olives.Shutterstock

When it comes to James’ diet, Bevan had her eating healthy, but he also didn’t want to restrict her. He tells Vogue that he wants his clients to have a balanced diet. “I worked out her calorific needs and then sent her a couple of weeks of sample menus with some recipes in, and Lily took ownership. We stuck to three meals a day and a couple of snacks. I don’t like anyone to be limiting what they love, so she was allowed to have a treat or two weekly.”

4. She’s Committed

Bevan tells Vogue that James is extremely committed to staying in shape. “All I asked when we began was that she did the best she could and she turned up time after time with the best intention to work hard and give it her all. It can be difficult to change physically without real commitment—particularly with a goal like Pamela Anderson! But we trained consistently, and that’s exactly what we did.”

5. She Sets Goals

Bevan tells Women’s Health that he set goals for James to accomplish. “Specific goals are very important and I feel a lot of failures when it comes to training are because they’re not set,” he explains. “Our routine was structured into four phases consisting of four weeks, and each phase would follow a similar pattern." "Goals for weight loss can focus on outcomes or the process. An outcome goal — what you hope to achieve in the end — might be to lose a certain amount of weight. While this goal may give you a target, it doesn't address how you will reach it," says the Mayo Clinic. "A process goal is a necessary step to achieving a desired outcome. For example, a process goal might be to eat five servings of fruits or vegetables a day, to walk 30 minutes a day, or to drink water at every meal. Process goals may be particularly helpful for weight loss because you focus on changing behaviors and habits that are necessary for losing weight."

British actress Lily James spent the summer filming her upcoming movie Finalmente l'alba in Italy, and is sharing some gorgeous photos from the experience. James, 33, posted a series of pictures, including one of herself in a beautiful green two-piece swimsuit. “A summer working (mostly) in Italy,” she captioned the post. How does she stay so fit? 1. Strength Training

74th Primetime Emmys - ArrivalsMomodu Mansaray/Getty Images

James’s trainer Matt Bevan was responsible for getting her into beach-body shape to play Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy. His aim was for James to drop weight while also building muscle. “We had to get creative and made use of light dumbbells, resistance bands, sliding discs and towels—yes, the ones you use to dry yourself!” Bevan says. “Then we adjusted variables, such as the tempo of each exercise, stability and range of motion. After that, we moved into full body strength, circuit-based workouts, increasing her strength and aerobic conditioning. It’s tough—your cardiovascular system is being worked and you’re also stimulating the muscles.”

2. She Loves Yoga

94th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsJeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

James did plenty of yoga while training for her part in Cinderella. "I did loads of yoga," she says. "It was brilliant for strength and posture, and also mentally, it kept me sane!" “All exercise can boost your mood by lowering levels of stress hormones, increasing the production of feel-good chemicals known as endorphins, and bringing more oxygenated blood to your brain,” says Harvard Health. “But yoga may have additional benefits. It can affect mood by elevating levels of a brain chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is associated with better mood and decreased anxiety.”

3. She Rides Her Bike

BFI London Film Festival Luminous Gala - ArrivalsMike Marsland/WireImage

James prefers to ride her bike around the city, as it can be faster than a car or public transport. Being outdoors offers many physical and mental health benefits and as a huge bonus, she gets a low-impact workout in the process. "Cycling is way faster. I love getting to see London as I ride by, it's such a beautiful city, and it keeps me fit while I'm at it," she says.

4. No Calorie Counting

The 2022 Met Gala Celebrating "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" - ArrivalsTheo Wargo/WireImage

Bevan encouraged James to eat a healthy, balanced diet while training—no calorie counting allowed. “I believe it often leads to a bad relationship with food,” Bevan says. “Instead, we used a macro split, with a balance of protein, carbs, fat and veg. Lily stuck to this philosophy and cooked her meals herself.” James also made sure to get plenty of sleep. “Having a balanced diet and cutting out alcohol was hugely beneficial – I slept better and woke up feeling fresh,” she says.

5. Protein-Powered Breakfast

James starts the day with a protein-packed breakfast of eggs, salmon, spinach, asparagus, and rye bread. “Having protein with breakfast can optimize your brain's ability to send messages to the rest of your body, helping you wake up,” says NASM-certified personal trainer Maia Appleby. “If you combine protein with carbohydrates, your body will gradually digest your breakfast, staving off hunger and keeping you energized until lunch.”

1. She Studied Pamela Anderson

What did it take to become Pamela Anderson? "A 3:30am alarm and coffee! Then three hours with amazing makeup artists and the biggest, blondest wig," she told TV Insider. "Sadly, Pam wasn’t involved in the show, but I studied as much as I possibly could. My only focus was to do her justice. I watched a lot of Baywatch. She is hilarious and so witty — always one step ahead…which [are two of] many reasons I think she is so iconic."

2. She Works Out First Thing In The Morning

British Independent Film Awards 2019 - Red Carpet ArrivalsKarwai Tang/WireImage

James tells Shape that she works out in the mornings, and she thinks that this helps keep her living a healthy lifestyle. “I have found that starting my day with exercise is the key. When I work out regularly, I immediately feel the benefits. It’s exciting to be empowered by that, and it turns into a domino effect. Naturally, I start eating better and stop drinking so much wine. Then I feel more energized in the morning to work out again.”

3. She Bikes

James says to Shape that she loves to bike through her neighborhood. “Recently, I got my bike back, and that’s been such a gift. It’s my bit of freedom to ride without having any direction stuck in my mind. It helps me stop overthinking and just connect myself to the present.”

4. She Loves To Dance

James showed off her dance moves in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and she also revealed that she did a lot of dancing in quarantine. “In lockdown, I had to make exercising fun; otherwise I would lose interest,” James told Shape. I switched up my normal yoga and Pilates for daily dance classes. Early on, I learned this fun dance routine and couldn’t stop doing it. The next day, my neighbour called saying, ‘Oh my God, Lily, you played that song for three and a half hours.’”

5. She Believes In Moderation

James tells Shape that while she tries to eat healthy, especially during lockdown, she also doesn’t ignore her cravings. James says that she believes in moderation. “I had to remind myself that it’s OK to indulge sometimes. I don’t try to deprive myself of stuff. If I want to order fast food, I let myself eat what I want to eat. Now I’m striving for a constant balance between the two.”

Over the past few years, Sydney Sweeney has become one of America’s sweethearts with celebrated roles in everything from hit HBO shows Euphoria and White Lotus to big-screen movies Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Anyone But You. In addition to her impressive acting ability, the star is a total bombshell and has one of the fittest figures in Hollywood. Here are the top 5 habits that help her stay fit at 27.

Water Skiing

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
