Maggie MacNeil is rock climbing in her workout gear. In a new social media post the swimmer shows off her strength and incredible body in a two-piece exercise ensemble during a climbing session. “This one required some significant body awareness 🤣🧗🏼‍♀️ climbing at home is always a good excuse to see friends,” she captioned the post. How does the swimmer approach diet, fitness, and self care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

1. Swimming

Maggie swims daily as part of her training. Swimming is a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity, according to the CDC. Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running, can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. In addition to the many physical benefits, there are multiple studies supporting the mental health benefits of swimming as well.

2. Warmup

Maggie shared her three top tips for warmups on race day with Speedo. She starts with “a lot of dry land work to get my muscles moving so they feel comfortable when I get in the water,” she says. “My second tip is to start my pool warmup with long easy swimming, just to get my muscles used to the movements to avoid injury. And my last tip is to do some speed work, whether that's 15 meters fast, or a dive 25, just to get my fast twitch muscles working.”

3. Snorkeling

While on vacation, Maggie throws on a snorkel mask and fins. “Saw some pretty cool fish today,” she captioned a post. “Trivia: who’s faster underwater? Like for me, comment for Wally.”

4. Hiking

Maggie also burns calories on dry land via hiking. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of certain respiratory problems

5. Cycling

Maggie enjoys biking. “Wouldn’t be a trip with Benny Boy if it didn’t involve 🚴🏽‍♀️&🍕Had such a great time at the Berlin World Cup! Did some sightseeing and some fast swimming,” she captioned a post. The Cleveland Clinic explains that biking, a low-impact aerobic exercise, is great for building muscle, improving strength and flexibility, and improving balance. It can also boost mental health and help other health conditions, including arthritis.

6. Rock Climbing

In her latest post, Maggie shows off her rock climbing skills. According to the NHS, rock climbing boasts mental and physical health benefits. It can improve stamina while working multiple muscle groups at once. “Climbing involves concentration and thought, as well as physical exercise, which helps to keep you focused, clear your mind of outside worries, and build your confidence and self-esteem,” they add. “This may help to alleviate the symptoms of some mental health problems.”

We are committed to bringing you researched, expert-driven content to help you make more informed decisions around food, health, and wellness. We know how important making choices about your overall health is, and we strive to provide you with the best information possible.

Margo Hayes is a rock-climbing phenom who made history in 2017 when, at just 19 years old, she became the first woman to ascend a 9a+ (5.15a) route. With three World Youth Championship gold medals and two 5.15-grade climbs under her belt, Hayes has solidified her place as one of the most influential climbers of her generation. Beyond her achievements on the wall, Hayes is also a singer and released her debut single, “Karma,” earlier this year. Recently, she appeared on the Climbing Gold podcast with Alex Honnold to discuss her journey, battles with Lyme disease, and how she balances her passion for climbing with her other interests.

1. She Rock Climbs

Rock climbing is one of the main ways Hayes stays in shape. The sport has a lot of health benefits. The Glen Ellyn Park District states, “Rock climbing is a physically demanding sport that requires strength, endurance, flexibility, and mental focus. It’s imperative to understand proper climbing techniques and how to use the specialized safety equipment required for climbing.”

2. She Does Pull-Ups

Margo Hayes.2Margo Hayes/Instagram

Hayes shares a lot of her favorite workouts on an Instagram story highlight. An exercise that she does often is pull-ups. According to Gymless, they are very beneficial. “Pull-ups can give size and strength to your upper body muscles. It allows you to target your lats, biceps, traps, and many more muscles. Practicing this consistently along with other variations that target different muscle groups, inevitably will give you the muscular aesthetics that you’re seeking. A study emphasized this by suggesting that this close kinetic chain exercise is designed to increase the muscular strength and endurance of the upper body and torso.”

3. She Uses Weight

Margo Hayes.3Margo Hayes/Instagram

Hayes likes to strength train to stay in shape. One way she does so is by doing pull-ups with a weight on her body. Strength training has a lot of benefits. The Mayo Clinic states, “Strength training may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities. Strength training can also protect your joints from injury. Building muscle also can contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. This can help you maintain independence as you age.”

4. She Boxes

Margo Hayes.5Margo Hayes/Instagram

Hayes shared on her Instagram story that she likes to box to stay in shape. Harvard Health states that boxing has a lot of benefits. “Fitness boxing is also a great aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise gets your heart pumping and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It can strengthen bones and muscles, burn more calories, and lift mood. Aerobics can also boost your endurance, which helps you climb a flight of stairs or walk farther.”

5. She Spends Time Outside

Margo Hayes.4Margo Hayes/Instagram

Hayes spends a lot of time outside, even when she isn’t climbing. Hayes likes to go to the beach a lot. UC Davis states that going outside has a lot of benefits. “Getting out into nature can lead us to want to walk, bike, hike, or kayak more often. People typically engage in regular physical activity when they're in nature. So, stepping outside can help you keep a healthy weight or even lose weight by increasing activity levels. Studies also show that being in nature has a positive effect on our bodies by reducing cortisol levels, muscle tension, and demands on our cardiovascular systems (lowers heart rate and blood pressure). Being out in nature often may lead to lower rates of heart disease. The great outdoors can also help you increase your vitamin D level, which is important for your bones, blood cells, and immune system.”

Madeline Sturt, a seasoned CrossFit competitor known for her dynamic workouts and engaging social media presence, recently thrilled her followers with a workout video set to Cher’s hit "If I Could Turn Back Time." Known for her rigorous training routine, Sturt showcased her skills on gymnastic rings, demonstrating the high level of fitness and dedication required in her sport. In her Instagram post, she playfully challenged her audience’s taste in music, suggesting that anyone who didn’t find the song a 'banger' was simply lying to themselves. This blend of humor and hardcore fitness exemplifies Sturt’s approach to training—intense yet accessible, inviting her audience to both admire her athleticism and join her in a shared love for classic tunes and tough workouts.

1. She Jumps Rope

Sturt shared some of her favorite workouts in this Instagram post. She captioned it, “Saturday burner.” In the first video, Sturt is seen jumping rope. The Cleveland Clinic states, “Jumping rope can be a good form of cardio, which increases your heart rate and can help decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease…And when you increase your heart rate, you also burn more calories. So, how many calories does jumping rope burn? While it depends on your pace, on average, someone may burn about 100 calories jumping rope for 10 minutes.”

2. She Lifts Weights

Madeline Sturt.3Madeline Sturt/Instagram

In the previous Instagram post, Sturt is seen lifting a barbell. ACE Fitness states that lifting weights has a lot of benefits. “Using heavy weights increases intramuscular coordination, the number of type II motor units and the amount of muscle fibers engaged within a specific muscle. Have you ever felt your muscles shaking while lifting heavy weights? This is because you are recruiting and activating the larger type II muscle fibers, which are only stimulated to work when a muscle is challenged with heavy resistance or working to fatigue.”

3. She Climbs

Madeline Sturt.2Madeline Sturt/Instagram

Sturt is seen climbing a wall in the previous Instagram post. Climbing of all kinds has a lot of benefits. All Climbers states, “Climbing is an endlessly variable series of movements. No climbing surface or route is quite like another, so the work you ask your muscles to perform during a climb changes each time you exercise. This ensures you’re training a greater number of muscles. Research suggests this kind of dynamic muscle activation is much more challenging than simple, repetitive movements.”

4. She Runs

Sturt shared this video on Instagram of herself running on a treadmill. FloTrack states that running has a lot of benefits. “Running releases endorphins, which then trigger a positive feeling in your body. The chemicals released after any exercise improve your mood and decrease anxiety and stress. You get a boost of energy and self-esteem and your sleep also improves. Running can set into motion a continuous cycle of improving different facets of your mental health.”

5. She Uses A Stationary Bike

In the first photo in this Instagram post, Sturt is seen on a stationary bike. Penn State PRO Wellness states that doing this has a lot of benefits. “A stationary bike workout is a low-impact workout that uses smooth movements to strengthen bones and joints without putting much pressure on them. This makes it a good workout option for people with joint issues or injuries.”

Emily Harrington is rock climbing in her workout gear. In a new social media post the professional climber shows off her amazing figure in a two-piece exercise set while high up in the mountains. “My 17th (?) year with @thenorthface brought an athlete summit for the books. I am more proud and honored every year to be a part of such a rad team. From the new teammates to the veterans to those who operate behind the scenes, only respect and stoke for this crew 🫶🏻 #neverstopexploring,” she captioned the series of Instagram snaps and videos. How does she approach diet, fitness, and self-care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

Adjusting Her Diet

Emily had to adjust her diet over the years. “I wasn’t eating enough. As a younger climber, I used to heavily restrict my carb and fat intake,’ Harrington explains. As a result, her energy levels were chronically low. “I think I got lucky that I never got seriously injured as a result, but it did affect my mental health and my relationship with climbing significantly,” she told Climbing. How does she eat on a day of trekking? “I had breakfast at midnight to start climbing at 1:30 AM,” Harrington says. “That was Kodiak Cakes Protein Oatmeal with berries and peanut butter.” Once she started climbing, she was careful to eat every hour—a mix of bars, nuts, dried fruit, crackers, and beef jerky. “My strategy was to constantly feed myself to avoid bonking but never too much to upset my stomach,” she says. And it worked: Harrington finished the route in 21 hours and 13 minutes, well under her 24-hour target.

She Doesn’t Count Calories

Harrington doesn’t measure her food or count calories. “I eat pretty much everything,” she says. “But personally, I love breakfast the most.” Her go-to meal? Kodiak Protein Oats or Kodiak Buttermilk Power Cakes, usually with yogurt or nut butter with two cups of coffee.

No Diets

“I CAN eat everything (which makes travel easy and not stressful), but I try to consume mostly whole, unprocessed foods, and drink alcohol moderately. I love peanut butter and chocolate. I try not to eat things that don't make me feel all that good, but other than that I try to have no rules,” she told Men’s Journal. “I feel like diets and rules are taxing for me emotionally and mentally, and I have a habit of going too far with it, so I try to focus on the enjoyment and experience of food above all else. Adrian and I love cooking and eating together. It's one of our favorite things to do together, so when we are home we prioritize cooking and meals at home and I love it so much.”

Sleep and Self-Care

Emily also prioritizes sleep. “I have a harder time so I bring essentials that help me sleep: sometimes my own pillow case, comfortable clothes to sleep in on the airplane, a nice eye mask, good ear plugs, etc,” she says. “I am also big on skin care. I bring face wash and moisturizer everywhere with me. Washing my face makes me feel like a new person after a long day of travel or in the mountains.”

Outdoor and Indoor Exercise

“Living in the mountains for me - playing, learning, existing in them - is imperative for my mental health. It's remarkable how much my mood changes depending on whether or not I was able to get outside that day. If I am in a bad mood or feeling a bit down, the best thing I can do is get myself outside in the hills,” she told Men’s Journal. “Training for rock climbing often involves a lot of time inside at the gym (especially in the winter), but I have learned that in order to feel healthy and balanced, I need to incorporate being outdoors as well. It's one of the biggest reasons I started skiing again, because when climbing outside isn't possible I have found solace in experiencing the mountains on skis.”

Water Skiing

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
