Malia Manuel, an American pro surfer who got recognized for being the youngest surfer at the age of 14 to win the U.S Open of Surfing, does a lot for her health and wellness to make sure she maintains her mental and physical strength. “@blackcoralyoga — thank you for hosting another Community Day for us to enjoy! Overjoyed with gratitude. Mahalo to all who joined, especially those who came to experience their first with Athletic Sculpt class and/ or dove into the beautiful healing of Sound Bath ✨ @oseamalibu @psychedelic_honey_ @lakaflow @thesclptco Thanks for capturing @caneroad,” she said on Instagram. What does she do exactly to keep herself so fit and in shape? We did some research to find out.
1. She enjoys surfing
Malia enjoys surfing and the challenges it brings on. "There's always something to grow and be better at in life and in your sport," she said. "Just like yoga, it's always a practice." According to Better Health, “surfing provides many health benefits including cardiovascular fitness from paddling, shoulder and back strength, and leg and core strength.”
2. She runs
After yoga, she said she goes for “a little beach run and swim," to continue on with her workout. According to the Mayo Clinic, “no matter what your current weight is, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, and it decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which lowers your risk of heart and blood vessel, called cardiovascular, diseases.”
3. She factors in workouts while traveling
On the go, she mentioned to POPSUGAR that she enjoys doing a Tracy Anderson workout. "It's so easy to do just in my little space, on my yoga mat or in an apartment," she said. Finding a routine, even while on the road, can be a huge help when it comes to staying consistent with healthy habits.
4. She goes from hot to cold
At home Malia told POPSUGAR she likes to begin her day with a sweaty hot yoga class that uses infrared heat to encourage healing and then a surfing session to cool off. "I like to open my shoulders and get some length in my sides," she said. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “instead of steam or flame-stoked heat, infrared saunas use infrared lamps and electromagnetic magic to create warmth. The process allows infrared saunas to operate at a lower temperature while still providing therapeutic benefits.”
5. She does yoga
She gets a lot out of practicing yoga, including keeping her at peace while catching waves. "I love going to Yoga Sculpt," she said. "If you're in a yoga practice, and you're just flowing, and you're not thinking…that's what it feels like to be in a barrel or on a wave." According to the Mayo Clinic, “yoga — a mind-body practice — is considered one of many types of complementary and integrative health approaches. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines that may help you achieve peacefulness of body and mind. This can help you relax and manage stress and anxiety.”
