Alysha Newman is sending good vibes in her swimsuit. The track and field star shows off her fit figure in a black bathing suit while lounging in a pool in Germany via one of her latest social media posts. “Manifesting a good day, week and life,” she captioned the Instagram post. How does the Canadian athlete stay so fit? Read on to see 7 of Alysha Newman’s top diet and fitness tips for staying in shape and the photos that prove they work.
1. Prioritize You Mental Health First
Alysha has her priorities in order. "If I were going to put it on a scale, my mentality is priority number one, nutrition is number two, and practice is number three," Alysha told Bodybuilding.com. "I put my nutrition before practice because I have to fuel my body with the best nutrients to get the best results."
2. Follow the 80/20 Rule
Newman follows a (mostly) clean eating diet. "It's extremely important to put the proper nutrients in your body, especially during long, hard, and critical practices," she told Bodybuilding.com. “If you don't eat right, it's like putting cheap gas in your car. Yeah, it'll drive, but not as well as it should. Our bodies are the same way."
3. Avoid Diets
You won’t find Alysha on a trendy diet. "I've experimented over the years to understand which foods work best for me personally. Everyone's body reacts differently to food so you can't just pull a pre-made diet off the shelf. You need to learn what's right for you," she told Bodybuilding.com.
4. Take a Break on the Weekends
"During the week I stick to a specific schedule," Alysha told Bodybuilding.com about her approach to fitness. "I usually have two technical days comprised of pole vaulting, gymnastics, and plyometrics. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, I run—anything from tempo runs to quick 60-meter sprints. I finish those running days with weight training. Whenever my competition schedule allows it, I take off Saturdays and Sundays to rest."
5. Stop Eating When You Are Full
Alysha only eats until she is full. “My diet is gluten-free and dairy-free but will occasionally have my ice-cream on cheat days,” she told The Brunching Mama. “Growing up I was always told that I had to finish my plate and that I needed to have protein, carbs and veggies each time I ate. It was hard to break habits especially since ‘eating everything on my plate’ was all I knew until two years ago when I decided to try something new. Now I only eat until I’m full and I change up my plates and meals everyday. I try to never eat the same thing in the week and this has been working amazingly for me!”
6. Find Fitness Hobbies
Alysha has a hobby that doubles as a workout: Golf, which boasts some serious health benefits according to a comprehensive review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Benefits include improved longevity, decreased risk of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke, good mental health, and improved strength and balance.
7. Do Pilates
Alysha is also a fan of pilates. “Off-season but never really off, you feel me? Doctors orders were no high-heels for 6 weeks and no impact in my workouts so I’m challenging my body this off-season with Pilates,” she captioned a video of herself doing pilates on a reformer.
