The Lost City star is known for her dedication to health and fitness, with colleagues noting she often comes to set in her workout gear, having already exercised before a long day of filming. So how exactly does she make 58 look like 38? Here’s what Bullock does to stay in fantastic shape and look 20 years younger.

Bullock works out with trainer Simone de la Rue, founder of the Body By Simone dance-based fitness studios. “There’s always cardio like dance, jump roping or rebounding,” de la Rue says. “Then we alternate between 10-minute intervals of high-intensity cardio and strength training moves that focus on different body parts.”

Bullock takes her fitness seriously, working out six days a week. And if that’s not intense enough, Bullock says she would do more if she could. "I do Pilates, kickboxing, weight training,” she says. “When I'm in Austin, I run or ride a bike. If I can work out every day, I will.”

Bullock sticks to a healthy diet but allows balance for indulgences. "Like last night I had brown rice and black beans and some steamed vegetables," she says. Bullock allows one cheat day per weekend. "I start Friday night and I end Saturday night. But it is not so regimented. I'll make lists of what I want to eat this week or next week."

Bullock is not a fan of cosmetic surgery, but she does take care of her skin. “I wanted to give [Bullock] something that would transform her skin without the need to undergo lasers, so I loaded up her bespoke facial with something that would give her long-lasting results,” says her facialist Georgia Louise. She also uses hemorrhoid cream on her face. “My favorite beauty-pageant secret: I didn’t realize that putting hemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business. But apparently [it] does help lines around the eyes,” she says.

Bullock doesn’t feel comfortable if she doesn’t get enough movement in. “I've been an athlete since childhood. So, sometimes, I rely on my body a lot more than it's able to execute,” she says. “But, I love it! I'm always training or doing some form of exercise four or five times a week; I just feel restless if I don't.”

Bullock works out not just for her health but to feel good about her appearance. “As for diet, I love food, but I eat well; the best thing to do is to have fun and be active all the time,” she says. “I know that I feel better when I'm that way, and that in itself allows me to want to dress up.”

Julianne Moore, 62, swears by yoga and weights. "I try to do Ashtanga yoga two to three times a week," she says. "I've also started working out with a trainer, doing light weights and a lot of jumping around. The main problem is I can't do anything six days straight because I get hurt. That's the thing about old age, eventually your hip starts to hurt and you have to switch and do something else."

Christie Brinkley, 69 fits exercises into her daily routine. “I’ll drink like, five cups of coffee. When I finish that, I try to get exercise in,” she says. “As far as exercise goes, everyone always asks if I use the Total Gym and yes, I really do. But I also might go to a spin class or work with weights. I would say running is my favorite way to sweat, but I’m not really supposed to do that anymore because of injuries… Some days the only thing I can get in is a seven-minute run on the Total Gym. Then while I’m brushing my teeth, I’m doing leg lifts. When I’m drying my hair, I do all kinds of squats.”

Angela Bassett, 64, works out with a personal trainer for accountability. She does cardio, weights, and sometimes yoga. "I gotta pay, so I will show up, 'cause I don't want to waste my money. I know myself, and I will talk myself out of going," she says. "My workout quotient will diminish as the day goes on. [At the end of the week] it's about deep breathing, a massage or yoga. Actually, I don't do yoga, I go for the massage."

Madonna, 64 works out with a personal trainer at least five times a week. "Madonna does five to six workouts weekly that vary on a daily basis and focus on a variety of methods and training modalities," says trainer Craig Smith. "Her workouts include dance, resistance training, interval training, yoga, barre workouts, Pilates, aerobics, athletic conditioning, and circuit training. Dance is a great exercise modality because it is a well-balanced method that includes all of the essentials of fitness: cardio, strength, endurance, stability, balance, flexibility, and mobility."

Helen Mirren, 77, focuses on healthy habits every day. “My advice is to work from the inside out,” she says. “First of all, take control of your diet and find one that makes you feel good. I’m the first one at the fish and chips, but what you’re putting inside your body does influence how you feel about yourself, so start there. The next thing is exercise, which doesn’t mean joining expensive gyms. I’m a big believer in the Canadian Air Force women’s exercise regime, which is 12 minutes. It is an exercise regime that starts from very low and easy, then if you follow it through, it can become quite difficult.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, limits red meat for the most part. “I would say the majority of my meals now have no meat,” he says. “But every so often I still make a steak and I still have my Wiener schnitzel when I go to Austria. I will never stop that: Everything that you do in moderation is not bad. I never call myself vegan, but I’ve learned that for health reasons and fitness reasons that it’s better for me at my age to just eat less meat. Also, there is some correlation between a healthy body and healthy Earth. It’s good for your body to eat less meat and it is also good for the Earth.”

Kevin Costner, 68, has made it a point to stay active for his health and happiness (especially when his children were younger). “I’ve been real lucky about a lot of things in my life, but one of the things has been this ability to stay healthy,” he says. “I think one of the big things that helps me is that I don’t sit it out. I move. I get out there and take the biggest bite out of life that’s possible.”

Susan Sarandon, 76, stays active by walking and hitting the treadmill. “If you want to age gracefully, you don’t smoke cigarettes and probably laugh a lot, and get the normal amount of exercise, and eat well and stay out of the sun would be the main things,” she says. “As is having an amazing makeup and hair team, that’s really the secret. It helps to live in New York because I walk everywhere. I ride my bike down the West Side Highway, and I get 30 minutes on the treadmill."

Jane Seymour, 72, still works out like a dancer. “Having been a dancer who quit when I was 17, my body is reminded every time I try to do any kind of ballet exercise,” she says. “My brain will tell it what it needs to do and my body will cramp up and say, ‘Not on your life.’ But, if I’m very careful, I can do some pliés and stretches, all of which I am doing in dressing rooms, at home, on the road, in hotel rooms, anywhere. Even at the airport. When I do workout, I tend to do Pilates reformer [exercises]. Because I do have [dance] injuries, it really helps me enormously. I also do gyrotonics, which does more of a rotation of the spine, which I find to be very important. And I got one of those power plate machines! If I stand on that and do any of those plies or squats or anything like that it sort of gives you quadruple the workout.”

Dolly Parton, 77, knows how important exercise is—but she admits she doesn’t enjoy having a regimented workout routine. “I hate exercise, like I hated school,” she says. “I watch my diet the best I can. I try and do low carb but if I see something I want to eat, I eat it, as I am a hog at heart. But exercise, I hate, hate, hate. I just do my diddly squats.”

"I'm in the best shape of my life," Jennifer Lopez, 52, recently admitted in a May 2021 cover story for InStyle's The Beauty Issue. While she’s always been a fitness inspiration, her workouts have become more efficient as she has aged. "In my 20s and 30s I used to work out but not like I do now," she revealed. "It's not that I work out more; I just work out harder and smarter. And it doesn't take me as long as it did in the past. I do it more for my health than I do for looks, which is funny. When you do things for the right reasons, you actually look better!"

2. Heather Graham

Heather Graham, 51, revealed a few of her stay-fit secrets to Refinery29. Not only does she avoid complex carbohydrates—white flour and sugar—but she does a lot of yoga (sometimes multiple workouts a day) and pilates.

3. Demi Moore

Demi Moore, a longtime yogi, recently upped her workout game with the help of at-home workout classes via The Mirror. The 58-year-old also enjoys going on hikes with her family, eats healthy, and doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs.

4. Catherine Zeta-Jones

Unlike pretty much every other Hollywood star, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 51, doesn’t have a personal trainer. Instead, the Welsh actress trains herself. “I don’t have a trainer. Crazy, right? But I don’t need anyone to motivate me,” she told InStyle. “I love exercise, even things like the elliptical machine and stretching. It’s a legacy of dancing all those years.” According to Catherine she works “at least 45 minutes a day, seven days a week” with some of her favorite workouts being swimming, tennis, peloton, and tap dancing.

5. Paulina Porzikova

Supermodel Paulina Porzikova, 56, didn’t start exercising until she was 40, but now breaks a sweat almost daily. “I try to exercise at least 3-5 days a week. And you know what? I frickin hate it,” she recently revealed in one of her workout videos. “I don’t like to sweat and huff and puff and hurt. If sitting on a couch, eating cake, drinking wine and reading did the same for me as exercise, there would be no contest. BUT. I have come to find out that ‘working out’ is that perfect little pill everyone is looking for. It makes you feel good, look good, good for your brain and body - a small miracle that has to be paid of by a little discomfort.” Her favorite workouts include dancing, rowing, and pilates.

6. Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa, 50, refuses to skip a workout "I work out seven days a week," she told In the Know. "And I try to workout an hour and a half a day, no matter what — whether I'm working or not. If I'm working, maybe I'll start it a little bit later or a little bit earlier, depending on what day of the week it is. But I am very religious about my fitness."

7. Salma Hayek

While Salma Hayek, 54, has revealed a number of times that she hates to work out, she does stay moving and has also discovered a creative way to engage her muscles. "Some people have the discipline to exercise in the morning, and I didn't develop that," she told People. "I work with a woman in London who taught me how to hold my body in a way where the muscles are activated all day long. So even when you brush your teeth, you're working the muscles," she continued. "It's restorative yoga. She taught me how to tone [my muscles] without clenching them. You relax them and focus on the parts that need to be used, but never with tension. If you're aware of your body, you'd be surprised by the effect it can have."

8. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has always maintained one of the fittest bodies in Hollywood, mostly due to her devotion to healthy diet and exercise. She once revealed to InStyle that she works out “almost every day, at least five or six days a week." And “variety is key” when it comes to the 52-year-old’s workout. "Mixing it up is always fun because that way you know you're excited, and it's muscle confusion. It keeps your body awake," she told Women’s Health. Her favorite workouts include cycling, yoga, barre method, Body by Simone and more recently, boxing. "It's the longest workout I've actually stayed with consistently other than yoga," she told InStyle. "There's something about the mental aspect of boxing — the drills, your brain has to work, you're not just sitting on a bike. It's amazing."

9. Elizabeth Hurley

Elizabeth Hurley, 56, doesn’t work out. “I don’t exercise, but I am very active,” she admitted to Harper’s Bazaar. She clarified to Us Weekly in October 2018 that she stays in shape by “being active” which includes “going for walks, stretching, maybe a little yoga or a little Pilates. But I don’t like high impact, high energy sports. I don’t actually think they do you much good. As long as you get your heart rate to the rate you need it to get, which is a fast walk. But you need to do a bit of it.” She does count steps, however, “I walk every day, so I try and hit my 10,000 steps a day and I do some stretching every day. And then sometimes I do a bit more, but that’s enough for me really.”

Cindy Crawford, 55, might not be making workout videos these days, but she is still engaging in regular strength and weight training workouts, posting her clips on social media. She also boxes with her husband, golfs, and surfs. She recently told Red magazine that her workouts have evolved from her supermodel days. Instead of working out until she drops, she takes it easier. “Now my goal is not to get hurt. So, I have added a lot more stretching and Pilates, and I don’t feel as compelled to do those tough workouts any more,” she said.

11. Halle Berry

For Halle Berry, 54, fitness is simply a part of her lifestyle. You just have to have the will and the desire. And you have to make up your mind that it's important. That's the hard work that people “always been fit, and have always thought about fitness and taking care of my body,” her approach has evolved. “It's only changed in terms of how I've been adding to my fitness regimen. It used to just be working out with weights, and then I got into Pilates, and then I got into yoga, and now I'm into martial arts."

12. Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone, 63, stays incredibly active and switches up her workouts. "Every time I exercise, I do something different based on which areas need to get in motion," she told Shape. This includes four to five times a week workouts, combining pilates, total-body stretches, strength training, yoga, and dance. She also avoids alcohol and caffeine and eats incredibly healthy, avoiding gluten.

Halle Berry, 56, intermittent fasts and uses weights for her workouts. “Wherever I am, I just try to find the foods I've become accustomed to eating, and I've been a pretty healthy eater for many, many years because of my diabetes,” she says. “And now that's become second nature to me. I fast until 2 p.m.—I usually eat between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and then I'm done for the day, which is the same when I'm traveling or working. I also have so many things now that I can take with me as far as working out when I travel, all sorts of bands and light weights that are easy to pack and use when I don't have access to a gym. So much of my favorite kinds of exercise can be done in the house or in a hotel room.”

Salma Hayek, 56, calls walking her dogs her version of exercise. She also likes the occasional juice fast. "When I feel stressed, I turn to food for comfort," she says. "After doing a juice cleanse, I'm motivated to eat healthier and not emotionally. Cleansing is like my meditation. It makes me stop, focus and think about what I'm putting into my body. I'm making a commitment to my health and hitting the reset button."

Viola Davis, 57, loved her training regimen for The Woman King. "When I was a girl wanting to win the Miss Central Falls Recreation Contest — wanting to look good in a bikini, wanting to be thin and cute and delicate and pretty — I just wanted to be willowy and thin,” she says. “I was always muscular and thicker, and I felt like my femininity could not be created with this canvas. And then all of a sudden, with this role, my muscles, my arms, my thick legs, my heavy voice were perfect. I felt unapologetic about it. I celebrated it physically in every way. Sometimes you do a movie and then it's over. And sometimes, you do a movie and it shifts you a little bit. You're a little bit better for it. And that's what it's been like for me with the training."

Keanu Reeves, 58, has an incredible work ethic when it comes to his exercise and training. “Keanu’s grit and stamina are astounding to witness," says personal trainer Patrick Murphy. “I would meet Keanu daily after his stunt training. We’d even train on weekends, for an hour each time. The exercises I prescribed influenced posture and alignment, and stabilization. KR possesses a serious commitment to ice baths, which I’m all for as well. One of the best recovery practices to do after all of the ground and pound stunt training is an ice bath.”

Michelle Pfeiffer, 65, does Pilates and yoga, and follows a vegan diet. "I love the vegan diet because I love carbs," she says. I'm just not someone that believes in denial. It's walking a path that's ultimately 80% healthy, 20%… sometimes it falls to 70. But that's why I think you have things like natural health remedies — you find out what works for you. And I do a lot and I have a lot of energy."

When I feel like having something sweet, I’ll have my favorite dark chocolate or vegan ice cream—sometimes both!”

Cate Blanchett, 54, is a big fan of Pilates and at-home cardio. “I really like Pilates,” she says. “I feel like it’s made for actors’ bodies. For me, I need to do it one-on-one. I find that when you go into a big class, you actually need a guiding hand. At home we have an elliptical trainer, which is good because that’s often the only exercise I get. But my job is very active — I end up stretching each day before I go on, so I feel very taken care of in that way.”

Meditation, for me, is really important. Although the movements appear relatively simple, squats can take time to master.
