Delacruz likes to run to keep herself in shape. She opened up about what got her into it in the caption of this Instagram video. “I want to be transparent about my experience in professional sports. There are some really high highs and low lows. Post Olympics depression dump is REAL. Recently, I discovered I like to run. At least for now, moving my body in different ways brings me joy. I’ve been a strength-based athlete for 10 years and the last time I ran a mile was in 7th grade! I’m proud of myself for trying new things and learning different ways to enjoy moving my body. Delacruz shared how she handles her mental health when competing with Velaasa. “I have the privilege of getting to work with USAW’s sports psychologist, who has helped me navigate through the physical and mental pressures of sports since 2019. Additionally, I learned that a lot of the pressure an athlete may feel comes from others. I learned to focus on what I want out of this sport, and that, alone, has reduced the impact of physical and mental pressures.”

Andrea Nisler, a dedicated CrossFit athlete, motivates her followers with her strength-focused workout routines. Recently, she shared a video on Instagram showcasing a variety of dumbbell exercises, including squats and Romanian deadlifts (RDLs), captioning it, “A good week of lifting - that is all 🙂 Looking forward to continuing to make it the focus this winter. As you can see from her Instagram post, Nisler likes to lift weights to keep herself in shape. ACE Fitness states that using weights has a lot of benefits. “Using maximal loads for compound (multi-joint) movements like the deadlift, squat-to-shoulder press, bent-over row or chest press can improve intermuscular coordination, which is the ability of many muscles to work together to generate and control high levels of force through multiple joints. Lifting heavy weights elevates levels of anabolic hormones—specifically testosterone, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1)—which are used to repair muscle fibers damaged during exercise. This helps the muscle fibers to become thicker and capable of generating higher levels of force.”

She Does Squats

Nisler is also seen doing squats in her Instagram video. According to Allina Health, squats have a lot of health benefits. “The squat is one of the all-around best exercises to do for your lower body. It strengthens and tones muscles in your thighs, butt and calves and improves posture, balance, flexibility and inner core strength. Squatting also improves bone mineral density to keep your bones strong.”

She Does RDLs

Nisler is also seen doing RDLs in her Instagram video. ACE Fitness states that the exercise has a lot of benefits. “The Romanian deadlift (RDL) is a traditional barbell lift used to develop the strength of the posterior chain muscles, including the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, hamstrings and adductors. When done correctly, the RDL is an effective exercise that helps strengthen both the core and the lower body with one move. Unlike the traditional barbell deadlift and other quad-dominant exercises such as leg presses, which place significant loads on the anterior portion of the knees, the RDL focuses most of the physical work on the muscles responsible for extending the hip and the knee from the posterior.”

She Uses A Fitness Bike

Nisler likes to use a stationary bike to keep herself in shape. She shared this video on Instagram of herself riding one at different intervals. Penn State PRO Wellness states that using a stationary bike has a lot of benefits. “Riding a stationary exercise bike is an efficient and effective way to burn calories and body fat while strengthening your heart, lungs, and muscles. Compared to some other types of cardio equipment, a stationary bicycle puts less stress on your joints, but it still provides an excellent aerobic workout.”

She Uses A Treadmill

Nisler also likes to walk on a treadmill to keep herself in shape. She is seen doing so in the beginning of this workout video on her Instagram. Healthy Talbot states, “Treadmills provide outstanding cardiovascular exercises, which can significantly enhance your heart health. Thanks to their ability to maintain constant heart rates throughout the exercise. If you’ve high cholesterol or cardiovascular issues, this can be very beneficial. They can help to diagnose cardiac issues like heart disease and artery blockages. Under normal circumstances, your body may not exhibit symptoms of these heart conditions. In a new social media post the CrossFit athlete shows off her strength and amazingly fit figure in a two-piece exercise set during a competition. “Defying gravity,” she captioned the Instagram photo. Balancing Family Life with the Gym

“I think I’m able to balance it pretty easily because I approach training differently than most CrossFit athletes. I’ve learned that, for me, less is more when it comes to being in the gym, so I have a few hours of high intensity training, and then plenty of family time,” Arielle told The Barbell Spin. “I am in the gym from about 11 AM – 1:30 PM, and then sometimes back for an evening session after my daughter goes to sleep. I train around her schedule and am able to make breakfast and spend time with her in the morning, and then we get to enjoy the afternoon and evening together. If I need to take her to gymnastics, dance lessons or to the park, I can, because I’ve gotten my workout done.”

Macros

Arielle counts macros using MyFitnessPal. Her main focus? Consuming enough protein. “Here's a look inside what I eat in a day as a full-time mom & CrossFit athlete! I love when I hit my protein goal! I weight around 150lbs & my goal is to get 150g of protein a day!@myfitnesspalmakes it easy to see exactly how much protein I'm consuming a day 🥩🍗,” she captioned a post.

Cycling

Like most CrossFit athletes, Arielle spends a great deal of time cycling. Here she is on the airbike. The Cleveland Clinic explains that biking, a low-impact aerobic exercise, is great for building muscle, improving strength and flexibility, and improving balance. It can also boost mental health and help other health conditions, including arthritis.

Hiking

Arielle enjoys outdoor exercise. Here she is hiking in Scotland. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

Training While Pregnant

Arielle didn’t let her pregnancy keep her from CrossFit. While she “scaled down her training significantly” she did a noon class four to five days a week. She also focused on eating “a good meal,” such as meat, potatoes, and veggies, throughout her pregnancy. As her pregnancy progressed she reduced intensity. “CrossFit was definitely good for my physical health, but also my mental health,” Loewen said. “Everything about my body was changing. But the one thing I knew was showing up to the noon class and doing the class workout was my mental escape,” she told CrossFit.

Connor captioned the post, “207.5kgs/457.5lbs for a huge PR to finish out the last heavy deadlift session before my comp next weekend 😈” ACE Fitness states that deadlifts have a lot of benefits. “When performed correctly, the deep muscles of the spine work to maintain stability, while the hips allow the movement of flexion and extension. The lift can help strengthen the posterior chain muscles responsible for extending the hip and knee when the foot is planted on the ground. Finally, the RDL can improve endurance strength of the deep core stabilizers responsible for controlling the position of the spine, as well as strengthen the forearm flexors responsible for developing a strong grip.”

Kristy Hawkins is getting a workout in and explaining why she opted out of Queen of the Platform. In a new social media post the powerlifter shows off her strength and impressive physique in a two-piece exercise set during a workout. “So this was my last squat workout before flying out to Florida to compete at Queen of the Platform, and I felt some tearing in my right outer quad halfway up. The swelling was not that bad so I thought there was about a 50/50 chance I could still compete. I flew out here, weighed in, and warmed up to about 200kg before making the difficult decision to pull out of the meet. It’s a pretty minor injury but I still felt a sharp pain that let me know it was not going to be a good day. I just need a little more time to heal,” she captioned the Instagram video. Cardio Doesn't Always Cut It

Kristy, a PhD, was overweight as a teen. She told Muscle & Fitness that she struggled and used extreme dieting to lose weight, and developed an eating disorder. She also devoted a lot of time to “work off” the excess weight with cardio and dance.

Take a Walk

Kristy understands the importance of getting her steps in. Luckily her dog, He-Man the Pug, who accompanies her to the gym, motivates her to walk. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer in terms of exercise, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day led to a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Swim

Kristy also enjoys swimming — and so does He-Man. “Had to repost from @he_man_the_pug because I love him so much and am slightly sorry I traumatized him. But I loved how he kept trying to climb on top of my shoulders,” she joked in a caption about one of their swimming sessions. Swimming is a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity, according to the CDC. Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running, can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. In addition to the many physical benefits, there are multiple studies supporting the mental health benefits of swimming as well.

Train Your Brain

Aside from being one of the best female powerlifters of all time, Kristy is always training her mind. She is actually a biologist! “Not powerlifting-related but this is how @he_man_the_pug and I spend our days. I’m proud to be a co-founder and CSO of Antheia using synthetic biology to revolutionize the way plant-inspired medicines are manufactured. #dogsofantheia #science,” she captioned a post.

Lift Weights

However, it wasn’t until she started strength training that she was able to heal. “In the same way my brain seemed natural to respond to learning about science and math,” she explains to Muscle & Fitness, “my body responded to exercise and training. Leonie tries to get a workout in daily, preferably in the morning. I still try to get up early to maintain a sense of routine. I start every day with a quick at-home workout and a homemade acai bowl, before starting work on emails and content creation. I’ve been getting really into TikTok lately, it’s funny and keeps me feeling energised!” she told Arcadia.

It takes a village, according to Leonie. “Community is key! The people you surround yourself with are more important than ever, as we are all trying to find ways to stay connected without being physically present. Speaking to people either on the phone or through social media can shift your mindset and motivation more than ever before,” she says.

ACE Fitness states that using weights to workout has a lot of benefits. “Strength training with heavy weights improves muscle definition. Muscle definition occurs as the result of muscles remaining in a state of semi-contraction and heavy strength training recruits the larger type II muscle fibers responsible for a muscle’s appearance.”

Hembrow likes to track her meals on her app. She talked about the benefits of this in the caption of this “What I Eat In A Day” Instagram video. “Make sure to take advantage of the calorie/macro tracking features in the @tammyfitapp during this challenge guys. It can be really helpful in reaching specific goals quicker. And it also can help educate you on your food choices when it comes to nutrition, ratios, hidden calories, overeating or under eating etc. honestly I’d recommend any beginner try it out just to get a good feel for how you’re fuelling your body!! I feel like when people think of ‘meal tracking’ it can be seen as something that seems restrictive or something only bodybuilders do.
