Olympian Shawn Johnson In Workout Gear Preps For Special Forces

Shawn Johnson has done a lot in her career. She won medals for team USA in gymnastics. She’s competed on two seasons of Dancing With The Stars, winning season 8 with Mark Ballas, and placing 2nd in season 15 with Derek Hough. She and her husband, Andrew East, host a successful podcast. And recently, she was announced as a contestant on the fourth season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. Shawn and her castmate, Jessie James Decker, and their husbands met up for a gym day, and shared a video on Instagram. How does Shawn Johnson keep herself in shape? Here are 5 of her secrets.
She Eats A Lot Of Protein
Shawn makes sure that she and her family eat enough protein. She shared some of her favorite healthy meals to cook with EatingWell. “Every Saturday night, we go to the farmers’ market and get these fresh-made meatballs and a homemade pasta sauce, and we do pasta nights. Every Saturday. Meatballs on top of protein pasta is just, protein everywhere. And sometimes we’ll do fresh-made sourdough pasta with meatballs and sauce with a big, fresh farmers’-market salad—and I’ll probably have a glass of wine. My kids also drink a lot of protein shakes, which is funny.”
She Loves Peaches

Shawn also shared some of her favorite healthy foods with EatingWell. One of her favorite fruits is peaches. “Living in Nashville, the peach truck comes around and sells fresh Georgia peaches,” Shawn reveals. “It’s my favorite part about summer. I absolutely love peaches. We’ll put them in drinks, we’ll make peach cobbler, we’ll do peach salads. Anything.”
She Believes In Moderation

Since Shawn is no longer a gymnast, she has changed her diet. “Now, it’s all about moderation,” she tells EatingWell. “I really don’t believe in depriving my children of any category of food in the world because they should enjoy it. They should learn and try everything, but as a mom, it’s also teaching them moderation and purpose in food. I think my daughter can tell you what protein does for her: it makes her muscles strong and it helps her go ice skating.”
She Makes Salmon Bowls

Shawn loves to cook healthy meals. She shared one of her go-to recipes in an interview with The Kitchn. “Salmon bowls. It’s really nothing fancy: steamed white rice, roasted broccoli, teriyaki salmon, and Yum Yum Sauce.”
She Stretches

A big part of Shawn’s fitness routine is making sure that she stretches. “I stretch every part of my body before tumbling in the gym,” she tells People Magazine. “Beginning with a simple cat stretch. Before running I always stretch my hamstrings so that I won’t cramp up while running long distances.”
