Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players in history. She’s in great shape, and opened up about her relationship with her body in a recent Instagram post. In it, Williams held her younger daughter while wearing a swimsuit. She captioned the post, “Loving yourself is essential. I find that I have to remind myself of that self-love through all different stages in my life. Right now I love that my body is not picture perfect. I love that I smell like milk - that milk sustains @adiraohanian I love getting to know a new version of my body. It is a change, but it’s a change that has been well worth it. So start this week, knowing that you are loved, and that starts with you.” How does she stay so fit? Read on to see 5 ways Serena Williams stays in shape and the photos that prove they work.

1. She Makes Time For Herself

Beautiful,Black,Woman,With,A,Smooth,Skin,Applying,Facial,SheetShutterstock

From her career to her family, Williams has a busy schedule. However, she is learning to make time for herself. She shared her go-to self-care practice with Into The Gloss. “I really have to force myself to take time [for myself]. One of the ways I do it is with sheet masks—I love those. And then I love these undereye masks, too. I just do that and sit in my La-Z-Boy—that’s super relaxing for me. My favorite is a gold one I got in London, at Harrod’s.”

2. She Takes Care Of Her Skin

Williams has amazing skin, and she makes sure to take care of it. She shared a lot of her secrets in her Into The Gloss interview. “I also just started using products from this brand called Chenot—I got them in Italy when I was on that fabulous vacation. So, I do cleanser, toner, obviously SPF, moisturizer, and eye cream. Right now I’m wearing SPF 50 from Chenot—I want to look young! I never leave home without it, or a hat.”

3. She Meditates

Williams shared some of her wellness secrets in an interview with Vogue. “I'm working on practicing meditation. I feel like I need to do it regularly. Do I? No. But I'm getting there! I also understand that prayer is a form of meditation. My motto is: Any time, any day, we can pray. It’s not like I have to pray at a particular time; it's just any time I feel I’m feeling stressed or misguided, I just say a prayer.”

4. She’s Occasionally Vegan

Green,Broccoli,And,Pea,Pancakes,(cutlets),On,Black,Plate.,HealthyShutterstock

Williams tells Vogue that she goes back to a certain diet when she needs to be healthier. “I've been an on-and-off vegan for a while. I was vegan for about six years and it was great. Now, I’m trying it out again because I really want to be healthy. And to be healthy, I need to eat healthy. When I don't eat healthy, I just feel terrible–to be honest, I feel like I almost have pain. So now, I eat vegan about six days out of the week. And then if I want, like, some eggs or something, I do that on the seventh day.”

5. She Does A Lot Of Cardio

Williams shared her fitness routine in an interview with Vogue. “My at-home fitness routine right now is just a lot of cardio. I do HIIT workouts (high-intensity interval training), a little stretching, a little strength training, but mostly cardio training. I do the cardio exercises on Tonal, which is really helpful for me just to get my body back and used to calisthenics. I don't necessarily want a trainer in my room or in the gym with me, so just having the Tonal trainers is a relief. It's just something different from what I've been doing for the past 20-plus years, and it's refreshing.”

Serena Williams is sharing her basic, everyday beauty look with her 17.2 million Instagram followers—and it’s refreshingly simple. Williams, 42, posted a picture of herself wearing a blue Nike workout jacket, showing off her beautiful less-is-more makeup style with glowing skin and gorgeous eyebrows. “Eyebrows and tinted moisturizer completes my natural ‘on the run’ day look,” she captioned the post. “Your brows omgggg,” a fan commented. Here’s how Williams stays fit and fabulous both on the court and off.

1. Cardio Queen

Williams needs to do some form of cardio every day, with running being her favorite. “My at-home fitness routine right now is just a lot of cardio,” she told Vogue. “I do HIIT workouts (high-intensity interval training), a little stretching, a little strength training, but mostly cardio training. I do the cardio exercises on Tonal, which is really helpful for me just to get my body back and used to calisthenics.”

2. Eat To Live

Williams enjoys eating but tries to keep it as healthy as possible. "My philosophy is eat to live. Don't live to eat," she told Women's Health. "I want to have a healthy lifestyle and, so you know, [I'm eating] a lot of greens and mostly plant-based lately, just super healthy stuff... You need it to survive. And [that's] very hard to live by, cause I definitely love to snack, but this is what I want. These are my goals."

3. Moody Eater

Pasta,With,Meatballs,,Parmesan,And,Tomato,Sauce,In,A,ClayShutterstock

Williams rarely eats in the mornings, and changes up her diet depending on her moods. "The only time I eat pasta is when I'm playing/training,” she told Women’s Health. “Usually, you'll never see me eating pasta otherwise. 'Cause I feel like I've had to eat it so much in my career. It's just like, I never want to see pasta again… I can have a smoothie for six months," she says. "And then I'll be like, I never want to see a smoothie again for the next six months. And then I'll be like, okay, I'm back on the smoothie. My eating is very moody."

4. Strength Is Beauty

Williams has come to be proud of her strong, beautiful physique. “My view of strength has definitely evolved over the course of my life and the course of my career,” she told Tonal. “I feel like, at the beginning of my career, I didn’t embrace strength. I felt like I had it, looked it, I felt it, and I was it. But I didn’t embrace it… I think once I embraced it and didn’t really care about what other people said or what people thought, people started to realize that strength is beauty, and there’s something amazing and beautiful about being strong.”

5. Meditation and Prayer

Williams protects her spiritual health as well as the physical. “I'm working on practicing meditation,” she told Vogue. “I feel like I need to do it regularly. Do I? No. But I'm getting there! I also understand that prayer is a form of meditation. My motto is: Any time, any day, we can pray. It’s not like I have to pray at a particular time; it's just any time I feel I’m feeling stressed or misguided, I just say a prayer.”

1. She Is Body Neutral

LizzoBikiniLizzo/Instagram

Lizzo identifies as “body neutral” not “body positive,” she explained in the December 2021 issue of Essence Magazine. “It’s exhausting,” she said. “And that’s the point. I don’t want to talk about this anymore. We should be neutral about bodies.” She has also used the term "body normative” to describe her approach. “I want to normalize my body. And not just be like, ‘Ooh, look at this cool movement. Being fat is body-positive.’ No, being fat is normal,” she told Vogue in 2020. “I think now, I owe it to the people who started this to not just stop here. We have to make people uncomfortable again, so that we can continue to change. Change is always uncomfortable, right?”

2. She Battled Body Dysmorphia

63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards – ArrivalsShutterstock

Lizzo revealed during a Rolling Stone interview that she battled body image issues as a teen. However, she has come to love herself exactly the way she is. “I’ve come to terms with body dysmorphia and evolved,” she explained.

3. She Tries Not to Respond to the Haters

After being accused of fueling the “obesity epidemic” via Twitter and she responded, she opted to take a step back from social media. “That was the end of that era for me,” she told Rolling Stone.

4. She Wants to Celebrated for Her Music Not Her Body

Global Citizen Live, New YorkKevin Mazur/Getty Images

Lizzo doesn’t want to be seen as “brave” for her body, but celebrated for her music. “I’m so much more than that. Because I actually present that, I have a whole career. It’s not a trend.”

5. She Wants Everyone to Feel “Blessed” and “Capable”

“I’m blessed, and I want you to know that you’re blessed. I want you to know that you woke up this morning, and that’s a blessing, I want you to know the sun is shining somewhere, that’s a blessing, and even if it’s raining, it’s cleansing you – it’s a blessing. I want you to know that whatever you’re going through, if it doesn’t feel good, that you will feel good again, and you have whatever it takes to feel good again,” she said during an Instagram video she posted after the Twitter situation. “You are capable. You deserve to feel good as hell, and you deserve to find that. And as proud as you are of me, I’m proud of you. I’m really proud of you – because life comes at you fast, and sometimes it can be so hard, but if I can make it, I know you can make it. We can make it together.”

6. She Prioritizes Self Care

63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards – Arrivalsfor The Recording Academy

“Self care is in the little moments — bathing, sweating, washing your hair.. it’s in laughing so hard you can barely catch a breath, your lungs expanding on a morning jog… now more than ever we need to enjoy the quiet within ourselves,” Lizzo said on Instagram.

7. She Wants Everyone to Feel “Good As Hell”

“Let me talk to y’all for a second,” Lizzo told fans at the 2019 MTV VMAs. “It’s so hard trying to love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you back, am I right?” she said. “So I want to take this opportunity right now to just feel good….. Because you deserve to feel good …. So tell me how you’re feeling?”

8. She Loves Her “Dimple” and “Stretch Marks”

“I’m doing this for myself. I love creating shapes with my body, and I love normalizing the dimples in my” backside “or the lumps in my thighs or my back fat or my stretch marks. … I think it’s beautiful,” she told Essence about loving her body.

9. She Chose to Accept Herself

2021 Outside Lands Music And Arts FestivalTim Mosenfelder/Getty Images

“I don’t think that loving yourself is a choice. I think that it’s a decision that has to be made for survival; it was in my case,” she told NBC News. “Loving myself was the result of answering two things: Do you want to live? ‘Cause this is who you’re gonna be for the rest of your life. Or are you gonna just have a life of emptiness, self-hatred and self-loathing? And I chose to live, so I had to accept myself.”

10. She Believes Fitness Has No Clothing Size

51st NAACP Image Awards - ArrivalsSteve Granitz/WireImage

“I want people to realise that fitness doesn’t have a look or an aesthetic or a weight. Fitness is a very personal thing that’s between you and your doctor,” she told Billboard. “To have a big black girl singing about how she’s working on the calisthenics – because mind you, I be in the gym everyday, but people don’t believe that … I think that it’s empowering for young girls, to see that it’s okay to work out and not have a six-pack.”

1. She Revealed Her Diagnosis in 2018

In October 2018 Selma first revealed in an Instagram post that she was battling MS. “I have #multiplesclerosis . I am in an exacerbation,” she wrote. “I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things.” "Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system)," says the Mayo Clinic. "In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves." Now in 2021, she says she's in a good place:

3. She Filmed a Documentary About Her Journey

Selma has been completely transparent about her health, documenting all of the ups and downs and sharing her symptoms with fans. In October, a documentary about her journey, Introducing Selma Blair, is coming to discovery+. “It can be very isolating when you get some diagnosis, for some people. For me, it wasn’t. It brought me out more. Because before I just thought I was batshit [crazy]. Which could still be the case, but batshit openly with MS and being symptomatic at times,” she told Deadline. “My humor’s a bit sticky… Like Carrie Fisher said, ‘If it wasn’t funny then it would just be true…’ I do like humor and sometimes very inappropriate [humor] and I ask everyone’s forgiveness as I go on this journey in life. Oh, I’m sure I’ll be cancelled many times.”

4. She Became Comfortable in Her Body

Selma learned how to be comfortable in her body. “I am aware my challenges affect other hopeful or isolated people—and a few of them may be joyful snobs like me,” Blair told Town & Country. “I’m very comfortable in my body, mostly because I am now making a deeper positive connection with it. I am fascinated by this body and this life. I am humbled and pleased to be any inspiration for people.”

5. She Is In Remission

TIME 100 Health SummitCraig Barritt/Getty Images

In August 2021 at the Discovery+ TCA panel, in which she discussed her upcoming documentary Introducing Selma Blair, she revealed she was in remission. "My prognosis is great. I'm in remission. Stem cell put me in remission," she said. "It took about a year after stem cell for the inflammation and lesions to really go down." She hopes that everyone can learn from her health journey. "To hear even just me showing up with a cane or sharing something that might be embarrassing, it was a key for a lot of people in finding comfort in themselves and that means everything to me," she said. "I'm thrilled that I have some platform. In no means am I saying that I'm speaking for all people in this condition or any condition of chronic illness, I'm speaking my story and I that helps normalize one thing to open the door for other people to be comfortable in telling their stories. I'm thrilled to have this here."

In his TikTok, Wahlberg is seen enjoying eggs with sausage. According to University Hospitals, eggs have a lot of health benefits. “At 70 calories each, eggs are a stellar protein source and a nutritional powerhouse. When eaten as part of a balanced diet, eggs provide multiple health benefits and are unlikely to pose a risk for heart disease.”

He Eats Salmon

Wahlberg is also seen enjoying salmon. The Mayo Clinic states that salmon has a lot of benefits. “Seafood in general, and salmon in particular, is a good choice for protein in the diet. If you can use salmon in place of a higher fat meat, that's even better. Salmon is probably best known for its omega-3 fatty acids. Called EPA and DHA, these fats may support heart health, brain function and healthy joints.”

He Likes Lemon Juice

Wahlberg is seen enjoying lemon juice in his TikTok. St. Vincent’s Medical Center states that lemon is very beneficial. “Weight-loss studies have also noted the effects of lemon. Drinking lemon water, which keeps you hydrated, increases your metabolism. One glass burns at least six calories. It can also help you feel full, making it easier to resist an urge to snack.”

He Likes Olive Oil

Another thing that Wahlberg is seen eating in his TikTok is olive oil. According to The Cleveland Clinic, olive oil has a lot of health benefits. “EVOO contains more than 20 types of polyphenols, a category of plant-based chemical compounds that help protect your heart and reduce inflammation throughout your body. Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant.”

He Gets Enough Protein

Protein is a big part of Wahlberg’s diet. He is not only seen eating high-protein foods like eggs and salmon in his TikTok, but he is also seen eating protein bars and powders. Piedmont states that protein is extremely important. “Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage and skin. In fact, your hair and nails are composed mostly of protein. Your body uses it to build and repair tissue.”

He Eats Blueberries

Wahlberg is also seen enjoying blueberries in his TikTok. The Cleveland Clinic states that blueberries have a lot of benefits. “Because blueberries are high in fiber and lower in sugar when compared to other fruits, they don’t cause your blood sugar to spike. For people with certain health conditions, scientists suspect this positive effect could aid with blood sugar management.”

Triceps are often used for pushing, which is utilized in our everyday activities such as opening a door, inserting a plug into a socket, or moving furniture across the room.“

She Does Leg Presses

Ora is also seen using the leg press machine in her Instagram video. The Mayo Clinic says that this exercise is very beneficial. “The leg press is an exercise you can do with a weight machine to work a variety of muscles in the lower body. Specifically, the leg press targets the quadriceps muscles in the front of the thighs, the gluteal muscles in the buttocks, the hamstring muscles in the back of the thighs, and the calves, all in an integrated fashion. Since the leg press works several muscles at once, it's an especially efficient way to strengthen your lower body.”

She Does Pilates

The last workout that Ora is seen doing in her Instagram video is a session on the Pilates reformer. Pilates has a lot of health benefits. The Cleveland Clinic says, “Pilates is a form of strength training, but it doesn’t look like some of the other strength training exercises you might be familiar with. Pilates focuses more on improving muscle tone than building muscles, but the result is similar: greater stability and endurance. Pilates isn’t going to bulk you up — if anything, it’s designed to cultivate a longer, leaner look. Still, it can lay a strong physical foundation for muscle-building activities — and may even reduce your likelihood of injury.”

For Hewitt, fitness is all about variety. “I try to switch it up a bit,” she told OK! Magazine. “I’ve found that if every week I do something different it tricks my muscles into not getting used to doing any one thing. I’ve been doing pilates, I’ve been doing yoga, I’ve done just plain old walking. I wear 10 pound weights on my ankles while I’m working just so that as I’m moving during the day I’m constantly building muscle. It’s not great for your back but I’m doing it anyway. I do a booty workout thing that I just did for Shape, which was really fun. And I do Zumba. I have DVDs and I dance around like a crazy person in my house.”
