Some celebrity splits are more shocking than others. While certain star pairings seemed doomed from the start (Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, we are talking to you!) others seem destined for happily ever after success. So when the lovers drop their breakup bombshells, the entire world is left shocked and confused. Here are 7 of the most shocking celebrity breakups, what went wrong, and who called it quits.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

Gwyn:ChrisGetty Images

After failed relationships with everyone from Ben Affleck to Brad Pitt, it seemed as though Gwyneth Paltrow had found her rock n’ roll prince charming in Chris Martin. However, after 10 years of marriage and two children, Paltrow announced the “conscious uncoupling” of herself and the Coldplay singer. "It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," they said in a joint statement. "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate." While neither has ever commented on whose idea it was to split, the two have proved that amicability is possible post-divorce. “It’s a lifelong commitment to constantly reinvent your relationship with your ex, which you do presumably because you have children together,” Paltrow explained to Harper’s Bazaar in February 2020. “I don’t see a reason to do it if you don’t have children together. Some people do. But I think we put all the hard work in at the beginning. I would say very rarely is it difficult now. We’ve learned how to communicate with each other. We love each other. We laugh. We have the best of each other. It’s really nice. It makes you feel like you don’t have to lose.”

2. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

Miley:LiamGetty Images

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met while playing lovers in The Last Song in 2009. Within a few years, they were engaged. At first, it seemed like a case of young love too soon, when the two called things off in 2013, went their separate ways, and Miley released one of her biggest hits, Wrecking Ball, about the romance gone wrong. However, when they reconciled in 2016 and tied the knot in December 2018, everyone believed it was the real deal. However, eight months later, the couple shockingly split. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus confirmed in August 2019. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.” The singer’s recent smash hit, Flowers, is reportedly about Hemsworth.

3. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt’s first shocking split with Jennifer Aniston resulted in a scandalous romance with her Mr. and Mrs. Smith costar Angelina Jolie. At first, the two appeared to be soulmates, making babies and adopting children, ending up with a total of six kids. However, after two years of marriage, Angelina filed for divorce in September 2016 citing irreconcilable differences. Pitt has since opened up about what went wrong, blaming the dissolution of their marriage on his alleged drinking problem.

According to ETOnline, the two went their separate ways in March. Even more surprising was the news that Taylor had already moved on with Matty Healey, lead singer of The 1975. That romance soured quickly, and Tay Tay is currently single.

After a failed marriage to Ryan Phillippe, America’s sweetheart Reese Witherspoon found love with Hollywood agent Jim Toth. The two seemed incredibly happy together and welcomed a child together into their blended family. However, just days prior to their 12th anniversary, Witherspoon announced they were going their separate ways. “We have some personal news to share… It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” her Instagram statement read. “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together. Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”

Ben and Jen, Gwyneth and Brad, Johnny and Winona. Some Hollywood romances were so epic and high-profile, people are still talking about them decades later. 1. Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate

1989 MTV Video Music AwardsJeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Juliette Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston were some of Brad Pitt’s most high-profile romances. But his brief fling with Christina Applegate went under the radar. The two rendezvoused back in the late 1980s, during the peak of Applegate’s Married…With Children fame and prior to Pitt becoming a household name. According to the gorgeous blonde, Jason Priestly brought Pitt over to her house for a barbecue and she ended up taking the 26-year-old as her date to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. However, their relationship didn’t even make it to the after party. Halfway through the show, she ditched him for another guy.

2. Tom Cruise and Cher

This May to December romance between Tom Cruise and Cher occurred at the start of Tom’s insanely huge acting career. Tom was 23 and Cher, 38, when the duo reportedly met at – get this – Madonna and Sean Penn’s wedding. They next saw each other at a White House even. "We didn’t go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there,” she told Event. Eventually, the two hooked up and engaged in a whirlwind romance, which she confirmed in a segment called "Truth or Cher" on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. When asked how Tom ranked in her list of lovers she said: “He was in the top five. It’s not a long list, just a good list.” According to Cher, she wished that things had worked out. "It could have been a great big romance, because I was crazy for him."

3. Ashton Kutcher and January Jones

Brittany Murphy, Demi Moore, and now-wife Mila Kunis are Ashton Kutcher’s most high-profile lovers. But did you know that he once dated Mad Men star, January Jones? Jones told GQ in 2009 that her first boyfriend was Ashton Kutcher in 1998 to 2001, but he didn’t believe in her acting skills. "[He] was not supportive of my acting," she said. "He was like, I don't think you're going to be good at this. So—fuck you! He only has nice things to say now—if anything, I should thank him, because the minute you tell me I can't do something, that's when I'm most motivated."

4. Jenna Dewan and Justin Timberlake

Shortly after Justin Timberlake’s high-profile split from Britney Spears, he started dancing (literally) with Jenna Dewan, who was a backup dancer at the time. "We dated, not that long. We were like friends...that dated," Dewan confirmed on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. "I was not the rebound! I was very clear not to be [that]."

5. Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere

Cindy Crawford was at the start of her catwalk crawl at the age of 22 when she met Pretty Woman actor Richard Gere –17 years her senior – at a backyard BBQ hosted by famed photographer Herb Ritts. They wed in three years later in 1991 and were married four years before announcing their divorce in 1995. "I think I was more willing at 22 to be, like, 'Okay, I'll follow,' but then you start going, 'Well, I don't want to just follow—I want to lead sometimes and I want to walk side by side sometimes,'" she said about the split.

6. Edward Norton and Salma Hayek

At the time, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek seemed to make sense as a couple, but now it’s hard to believe they ever dated. From 1999 to 2003 the duo walked the rep carpet together. While the romance didn’t pan out, years later she expressed gratitude for his role in her career, namely for helping out with Frida. "Thanks to a phalanx of angels who came to my rescue, including Edward Norton, who beautifully rewrote the script several times and appallingly never got credit," she wrote in a 2017 opinion piece for the New York Times.

7. Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were both 18 when they met on the set of the 1984 drama Firstborn. According to People, they moved in together just eight weeks after they began dating and stayed together for nearly seven years. According to RDJ, his drinking and drug use was responsible for their split. "I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn't jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn't get my act together," he told Parade.

I’ve been doing pilates, I’ve been doing yoga, I’ve done just plain old walking. Water Skiing

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Mariana Morais is showing off her ab-fab figure – in a two-piece exercise set. In a new social media post, the fitness influencer flaunts her fantastic figure in a brown sports bra and leggings. “Self Progress & Development is not always linear. Sometimes we take steps back & that’s just a sign to course correct so we can leap forward. If 2024 wasn’t the year you expected, use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, & carry on. It’s you VS you - continue to try, focus on consistency > perfection & you will prevail 🤎 rooting for us all to strengthen our mind & bodies this year,” she captioned the series of Instagram snaps. How does she approach diet, fitness, and self-care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

Strength Training

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

Prioritizing Digestion and Getting Blood Work Done

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Pilates

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
