Shevchenko shared her approach to fights with Yahoo Sports. She says that she makes sure to be focused. “The most important how-- as a definition of the champion and the average fighter-- how you can control your emotion. If you can turn it into the way you have to. You have to really focus, and do your best in the training, in your job, in everything. This is like defying you as a fighter, defining you as a person. But if you're thinking, oh, looks like my body is not ready today, looks like my mind is ready. I better go do something else. This is your definition. This is really like say like what type of fighter you are.”

2. She Doesn’t Set Goals

Shevchenko tells Yahoo Sports that she doesn’t like to set goals. “You know I kind of feel that when the person tries to set goals like and follows his goals, it's just like it's not good. It's not good for the internal feeling that one can have. Because you have this pressure and you are thinking, oh no, I have to rush in some way, or I have to do that, I have to like another thing. And if something is not going as they planned, they are so frustrated. They try and do crazy things. They're starting to act like, literally, like you're thinking like, what they are doing. It's not how it's supposed to be. And that's why I don't like it. I don't like to set goals.”

3. She Makes Sure To Train

Shevchenko shared how she makes sure to still train when she doesn’t want to with Yahoo Sports. “You know, during the training camp it's very hard. It's very hard. Recently I was asked, ‘When is the last time you feel that you don't want to train, that you're waking up in the morning and you don't want to train?’ And I say that this is like a very common feeling during the training camp because it's hard. And really, you are kind of like, oh no, but then you like starting to understand and your mind take it over because it's like saying you have to train because you are prepared for the important fight. It's a normal thing that's happening.”

4. She Knows What She Wants

Shevchenko knows what she wants. She tells Yahoo Sports that this helps her with fights. “It's like knowing what I want. What is number one for me. And to be able to get rid from all unnecessary things, and like to focus only one thing that's really important, to be successful in martial arts, to be dominated as a fighter. And just to prepare for each fight is if it's my best fight.”

5. She Hikes

Shevchenko enjoys going on hikes. She shared these photos on Instagram of herself hiking the Pacific Coast Highway. Ace Fitness states that hiking has a lot of benefits. “Being in nature decreases anxiety and includes some benefits such as an increase in cognition and affect, or feelings and emotions. Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
