Mindy Kaling is an actress and TV writer, and now heading up a swimsuit collab with Andie Swim. She recently announced her swimwear line with a video on Instagram of herself modeling pieces from it. How does she stay so fit? Read on to see 5 ways Mindy Kaling stays in shape and the photos that prove they work.

1. She Manages Her Hyperpigmentation

Kaling tells Bustle that she struggles with hyperpigmentation and has found products that help with it. “I’ve always had really specific skin problems. I have incredibly oily skin. I still break out. I have hyperpigmentation issues. I have keloids. What was really cool about Lion Pose is it’s the first company that ever contacted me where the two founders were Indian women with darker skin tones who were dealing with my exact issues. They met at Harvard Business School and are so knowledgeable about dermatological things that I didn’t even know or think about. I started using their Unspotted [serum], and it completely got rid of all of my hyperpigmentation marks that I got from my acne scarring.”

2. She Removes Her Makeup

Skincare,,Happy,And,Portrait,Of,Woman,With,Cotton,For,FacialShutterstock

Kaling makes sure to remove her makeup, and shared her process with New Beauty. “So what I always do when I take off my makeup is I use a hot washcloth, so I’m not using my expensive products to take stuff off that could have just been taken off with a cloth,” Kaling explains. “Then I’ll do some kind of an oil-based makeup removing balm. Or if it’s not oil-based, it has that smooth, creamy feeling to take off most of my makeup. The one that I’ve been using these days is the Drunk Elephant Slaai. I also really like the Augustinus Bader cleansing balm. That one’s pricier so that’ll be like, if someone gives that to me for a gift for Christmas, my birthday, I’ll use that one.”

3. She Uses Coconut Oil In Her Hair

Kaling revealed to Bustle that she likes to use coconut oil on her hair. “On Sundays when I was in high school, I remember my mom microwaving coconut oil that we would get from the Indian store. My dad loves sports, so we’d be watching John McEnroe or Andre Agassi at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. My mom would sit on the sofa, and I’d sit on the ground in front of her, and she’d put coconut oil in my hair. By the time the match was over, I could go rinse it out.”

4. She’s Consistent

Kaling makes sure to workout on a regular basis. She shares how she does so with People. "It's hard with two kids that I wake up really early and I fit it in — and I basically live in workout clothes so I can get it in, get an extra mile in. I just tell myself I have to do basically 20 miles a week of either hiking or running. And so that's been incredibly helpful to me.”

5. She Wears Sunscreen

Kaling shared some of her skincare secrets in an interview with Bustle. She says that wearing sunscreen is extremely important to her. “The biggest [skin concern] for me is that I have dark brown skin, and I really do care about sun protection. For the longest time, anything I found would have such a white cast on my skin. I love the new Ghost-Buster Sunscreen that Lion Pose came out with. It just blends in perfectly.”

Mindy Kaling is showcasing her incredible weight loss journey in a gorgeous blue swimsuit, saying she is excited to show off her new look. “The lowkey romantic gift my friends @traceywigfield and @loulielang gave me was this sexy blue one piece bathing suit which I was so excited to model. You know you have good friends when they’re excited to buy you intimate apparel!,” she captioned an Instagram post. How does she stay so fit? 1. She Refuses To Diet

Kaling is passionate about not being too restrictive with diet, as it usually backfires. "I eat what I like to eat," the actress told ET. "If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it." Experts agree that severely restrictive diets rarely work over the long term. “At any given time, more than a third of Americans are on a specific diet, with weight loss as a leading reason,” says Robert H. Shmerling, MD. “Most are going to be disappointed, because even when successful, lost weight is frequently regained within a few months.”

2. ...But Portion Control Is Key

While Kaling refuses to diet, she understands moderation is crucial for health. “I'm never going stop being a foodie. I’m never going be someone who can just have spinach and salmon every day,” Kaling says. “I just am really for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it."

3. She Loves to Walk

Kaling makes a point to keep moving throughout the day. “Sometimes I’ll be like, ‘Well, I have four different times today where I have 10 minutes so let’s just walk instead of sitting down and checking Instagram,'" she says. “So instead of it being like one chunk of exercise in the beginning of the day or none at all, I’m now just deciding that I’m going to be a more active person all the time.”

4. She Won’t Do “Punishing” Workouts

Kaling understands that when it comes to exercise, it’s important to find something you enjoy. “In my 20s, I thought a workout had to be something that was punishing, like 45 minutes of running and you had to hate it the whole time,” she says. “I don’t have that relationship with exercise anymore.”

5. She Keeps Things Simple

2022 Tribeca Festival - "Vengeance" NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 12: Actress Mindy Kaling attends the premiere of "Vengeance" during the 2022 Tribeca Festival at BMCC Tribeca PAC on June 12, 2022 in New York City. (Photo by Mark Sagliocco/WireImage)

Like most people who instinctively understand what works for their body, Kaling doesn’t overthink her diet and fitness regimen. "Honestly, I didn't really do anything differently. I eat what I like to eat. If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it... I wish there was something more juicy or dynamic about the way that I've lost a little bit of weight, but that's the way I've done it,” she explains.

6. Workout As Therapy

Kaling appreciates the mental health benefits of exercise. "I love working out," she says. "I don't go to therapy, and I think that's because I get endorphins from exercise. It's such a powerful tool for me mentally. I know that working out is not the path for me to be skinny. For my body type, that entails eating well and making healthy choices. Working out is a way for me to have mental strength, and now, with a kid, it's also time that I have just for myself and to focus on my body."

7. She Was Sensible About Losing the Baby Weight

Kaling continued working out throughout her pregnancy to make post-baby weight loss easier. “I did a lot of yoga and a lot of walking, and I jogged until I couldn't jog anymore,” Kaling says. “I exercised until the morning I gave birth. Also, about a week after I had the baby, I started walking a couple of miles a day. I don't recommend that for everyone, obviously, but I didn't have that difficult of a delivery. All those things were really helpful when it came to losing the weight.”

1. She Embraces Her Changing Body

Mindy is totally okay with the changes in her body over the years. "I would love to be the size I was when I was 32 or something, but I just refuse to beat myself up about it," she recently told Shape. "I love to eat at restaurants, I love to eat home cooking, and I don't like restricting my diet. And [now] I'm like, as long as I'm getting enough nutrients and feeling like my heart and my lungs are really getting exercise, I don't really beat myself up about that."

2. She Jogs

Mindy’s go-to workout is jogging, and she does three to four miles a couple of times a week, usually with a 10- or 11-minute mile time. "If I didn't have exercise through the pandemic, I think I would have gone crazy," adds Kaling. "My eating wasn't always great, but my exercise was very consistent."

3. She Mixes Up Her Workouts

Mindy revealed to Shape in 2018 that she is all about variety when it comes to working out. "I work out four to five times a week when I'm not shooting. I like to mix up my workouts: I'll do a SoulCycle class, a strength-training class with my trainer, and yoga once a week. For someone with my personality, which is somewhat skeptical and cynical, it's really good for me to do yoga and take it at face value. Because I'm Indian, I feel like I should be good at yoga, but I'm terrible at it. It's my way of trying to get back to my roots.” Recently, she also shared a photo of herself kickboxing. “NGL, this exhausted me,” she captioned a photo of herself kicking a bag.

4. She Is All About Hydration

Mindy prioritizes hydration, throwing back two to three bottles of Propel's Immune Support drink, packed with vitamin c, zinc, and the electrolytes sodium and potassium. "It actually totally transformed my workout," she told Shape. "Now I'm like, 'Oh, this is what it's like to exercise when I have replenished electrolytes. This is such a better workout.'"

5. She Works Out First Thing in the AM

2020 Vanity Fair Oscar After PartyDavid Crotty/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images

After having kids, Mindy started getting in her workouts before the crack of dawn. "It's kind of a big lifestyle change, and three-quarters of the time I'm fine with it, but one-quarter of the time, I just resist," she told Shape. "I'm like, 'No, I will not get up when it's dark out and exercise. I'm not going to do it.' And I let myself have those times, but luckily, my sense of propriety makes it so that most of the time I do get up."

6. She Eats What She Wants...In Moderation

Top,Eye,View,Of,Bite,A,Half,Of,Delicious,YummyShutterstock

In the 2018 Shape interview, Mindy revealed her secret trick to eating what she wants: Order what you really want and eat half of it.

7. She Works Out for the Mental Benefits as Well as the Physical

92nd Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsJeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

"I love working out," she revealed to Shape.

8. She Fuels Up with Healthy Foods

"I like every food: sushi, Ethiopian, French, spicy, sweets,” she revealed to Shape. While she was raised to clean her plate, she’s “had to come to terms with the fact that I don't have to eat everything on there. So on a typical day, I keep it pretty healthy. In the morning, I try to have eggs because they're easy to cook even if you're as bad at cooking as I am. I'll poach an egg or two, have a third of an avocado and a piece of Ezekiel toast with butter. That fills me up for a really long time. I'll have a big salad for lunch with chicken or fish on top. For dinner, if I'm home, I'll cook something healthy like a piece of salmon with some spinach. But if I'm going out, I'll order whatever I want and eat half of it. That way I get to taste everything. I also love having a cocktail. I probably have two or three of them a week, which is such a joy. In New York, the cocktail menus in some of these restaurants are amazing. That enhances my entire dining experience."

Read on to see 6 ways Mindy Kaling stays in shape and the photos that prove they work.

1. She Spends a Lot of “Time and Energy Trying to Be Healthy”

Mindy recently got into the best shape of her life. "I'm feeling really confident in my body these days, which is not something that I've been able to say for my whole life, unfortunately," she told People. "I know people are really interested in my body and the changes in my body, and I think it's flattering and sometimes it's just a little much, so I don't try to tune it in too much. The truth is that I spend so much time and energy trying to be healthy."

2. She Hikes or Runs 20 Miles Per Week

National Museum Of Asian Art Centennial Celebration DinnerLeigh Vogel/Getty Images

Mindy spends a lot of time exercising. "I just tell myself I have to do basically 20 miles a week of either hiking or running," she told People. "And so that's been incredibly helpful to me."

3. She Eats in Moderation

pexels-los-muertos-crew-7772189Los Muertos Crew via Pexels

Mindy loves eating out and trying new foods. So, her approach to diet is all about moderation. She allows herself to indulge but doesn’t go overboard.

4. She Works Out with a Trainer

Mindy works out with a trainer. She told People that exercise is a "really a big commitment," with two young children. "It's hard with two kids that I wake up really early and I fit it in — and I basically live in workout clothes so I can get it in.”

5. She Changed Her Mentality About Health

Mindy maintains that changing her mindset about diet and exercise has been crucial. "I've tried really hard to let go of this idea of losing weight for vanity reasons and really trying to think of how I can be healthy," she said in 2022. “And for me, healthy is working out, moving my body a lot, keeping hydrated, and then not having negative connotations around working out and making me feel like if I don't do this, then I won't be something else. And that's taken a long time to kind of shed those old ideas of working out."

6. She Does Yoga

Mindy also does yoga, sometimes with her kids. “I like that they see me on the yoga mat. My daughter stretches with me on the yoga mat and I really love that,” she said. There is a laundry list of reasons to do yoga, explains Harvard Health. “Researchers found that people who practiced yoga for at least 30 minutes once a week for at least four years, gained less weight during middle adulthood,” they said. “People who were overweight actually lost weight. Overall, those who practiced yoga had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) compared with those who did not practice yoga. Researchers attributed this to mindfulness. Mindful eating can lead to a more positive relationship with food and eating.”

Water Skiing

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Strength Training

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
