Don't Starve Yourself
Don't ever starve yourself to try and lose weight, says Heidi. "The myth that models don't eat is totally not true," she told Shape. "I just think that because we're in this business, we have to choose more wisely." She eats a mixture of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. "It's important to keep a balanced diet, but I'm not a fan of deprivation. If I want a cheeseburger, I am not only going to eat that cheeseburger, but I'm going to enjoy that cheeseburger."
Drink Smoothies
If you need a little extra help to sneak your veggies in, try drinking smoothies "In 2013, I made a New Year's resolution to drink a fruit and veggie smoothie every morning. It's one of those that went from a resolution to a life habit. My kids and I do it together, and we love it," Klum told Shape.
Find Healthy Motivations to Stay in Shape
Looking good in a swimsuit shouldn't be your only motivation to break a sweat, says Heidi. "It's not just about doing the cardio so that you're nice and fit, and slim and trim, but your heart needs to pump, too," she explained to Shape. "Whenever I need motivation, I think of the big picture. I want to be as healthy as possible for myself and my family."
Daily Workouts Aren't Required
Some stars maintain they work out almost daily, but according to Klum you can stay in shape without breaking a sweat every day that ends in Y. "I don't really exercise that much," she confessed to Buro27. "I mean, two times a week for sure. I will do the Stairmaster I've got at home or a running machine. I also think it's important not to exercise too much. I don't think you have to do a lot, but if you do a little bit all the time, I think that's important. Sometimes I'll do some little weights while I'm running."
Make Fitness Fun
While Klum tries "to be active as much as possible" she enlists the help of her family to infuse some fun "Balancing my work and their schedules makes it hard to find time for a traditional exercise routine, so we try to do as many outdoor activities as a family as possible," she told Shape. "We love to go on bike rides, take our dogs hiking, or jump on the trampoline. That's the best way to stay fit and healthy—do things that don't feel like work."
Go Outside and Run
Klum loves outdoor cardio. "My favorite workout is a long run along the Westside Highway, which stretches along the Hudson River in New York City…it's a beautiful path, and you always feel surrounded by such an amazing community," Klum revealed to Shape. "You see the same people running every morning, and they inspire me to keep going. That and knowing there is a Starbucks coffee at the end of the route!"
