She Was Trolled About Her Body

In January 2014, Chiquis told People that after years of being ridiculed for her weight, she decided to hire a nutritionist and get into shape. "People would say I was gordita. Yes, I had a little chubby girl in my heart, and she's still with me, but like I always say: 'It's time for [the gordita] to take a break,'" she explains.

"I want to feel better physically, mentally, emotionally," she wrote in a 2019 Instagram post. "But I obviously want to look better. I want to see how much weight I can lose between today and the end of the year. I want to start 2019 right. I want to feel good. I want to look better and feel motivated for the next year. They say how you start something is how you finish, so I want to start the year off right."

In 2018, Chiquis embarked on a health journey, starting with a 21 day challenge. "21 days of keto because it takes 21 days to create or break a habit," she shared. "So it's in your hands after 21 days if you want to keep on going and feeling great with this new lifestyle, or go back to your old self."

She Is a Keto Devotee

Chiquis is so devoted to the keto diet that she published her own cookbook devoted to it, Chiquis Keto: The 21-Day Starter Kit for Taco, Tortilla, and Tequila Lovers. The book includes lots of latin-inspired dishes that follow the rules of keto, limiting carb consumption to get the body into ketosis.

She Hikes

In March, Chiquis hiked Upper Yosemite Falls with a friend. "I conquered it!!!!" she captioned the video. "This is the hardest thing I've ever put my mind, body and spirit through. After 23,000 steps, 7.5 miles, 3,200 ft climbed/hiked I felt more than accomplished. I felt relief! Proud! I felt…better. Hiking up was definitely strenuous, but coming down was a challenge in itself. There were times I wanted to quit and turn back, but I wouldn't allow myself to take not even a step backwards. I stayed focused on the task ahead," she continued, adding that she was "determined" to finish what she had started. "What kept me going was the feeling I knew I'd have at the top of the mountain. When I finally got there, I cried. Tears of pure joy and gratitude! I wasn't aware how much I needed to disconnect from the world, and connect with nature, and my higher self. During my meditation and prayer time up there, I let go of EVERYTHING I had been emotionally carrying for the past few weeks! Sitting there reminded me of how much natural beauty we are surrounded with but ignore because of the daily hustle and bustle. It was for sure a humbling experience, one I'll never forget."
