She Loves Protein and Vegetables
Botwe loves protein and vegetable plates, a combination experts say is ideal. "It's important to have fiber and protein at meals and snacks because those are the things that help us feel full for longer," says Lauren C. Kelly, MS, RD, CDN, a clinical dietitian at the Center for Advanced Digestive Care at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "[When it comes to large portions of carbohydrates] even some of the healthier ones will spike the blood sugar, which inevitably drops, and then we tend to crave things to bring our blood sugar energy back up again, which is usually carbohydrates. When you build your meal around protein and fiber, these spikes and drops don't happen as much."
She Enjoys Fish
Nothing says "vacation" like Botwe's love of fresh seafood enjoyed by the beach. "Fish and other seafood are the major sources of healthful long-chain omega-3 fats and are also rich in other nutrients such as vitamin D and selenium, high in protein, and low in saturated fat," says the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. "There is strong evidence that eating fish or taking fish oil is good for the heart and blood vessels."
She Loves Italian Cuisine
Botwe is a big fan of traditional Italian cuisine. "One of the best things you can do for your heart is follow the Mediterranean diet," says cardiologist Hooman Yaghoobzadeh MD, a clinical associate professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. "There's also growing evidence that it may help people live longer."
She Loves Shrimp
Botwe frequently enjoys delicious shrimp/prawn-based dishes. "Prawns have a pink hue thanks to a compound called astaxanthin, which is obtained through the algae that prawns eat," says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. "This compound has anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce the risk of some chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, and be beneficial for skin health."
She's Always Walking
Botwe is a world-traveler, and loves to walk around new cities for hours as she explores. "Walking can be as good as a workout, if not better, than running," says Dr. Matt Tanneberg, CSCS, a sports Chiropractor and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist in Phoenix, Arizona. "You hear of people 'plateauing' when they continue to do the same workout routine and stop seeing results. I see patients all the time that plateau from running, they will run the same distance, speed and time, day in and day out. You need to constantly be switching up your exercise routine in order to get the maximum benefit for your health."
