She Loves Lemons
Isoardi loves delicious, nutritious lemons, picking them while they are ripe and including them in her many recipes. "One study found that although vitamin C did not prevent otherwise healthy people from catching the common cold, it may shorten the duration of symptoms, and it may halve the common cold risk in people exposed to short periods of extreme physical stress (e.g. marathon runners)," says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin.
She Makes Meatballs From Scratch
Isoardi is proud of Italy's fantastic food culture and heritage, and makes her own Italian meatballs from scratch using fresh, local ingredients. Cooking and baking have many mental health benefits, whether it's cooking for yourself or others. "If the activity is defined as personally rewarding or giving a sense of accomplishment or pleasure, or even seeing the pleasure of that pumpkin bread with chocolate chips making someone else happy, then it could improve a sense of well-being," says Jacqueline Gollan, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
She Loves To Swim
Isoardi is a skilled and accomplished swimmer. Swimming is a great low-impact way of getting a cardio workout, experts say. "Whether you have a joint injury or are recovering from surgery, the water will allow you to stay active, maintain fluidity in your joints and activate multiple muscle groups," says Valerie Taraborelli, a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery at Banner Health in Arizona. "Swimming in warm water can be advantageous as this will allow for improved circulation that relaxes muscles and allows for safe execution of stretches and exercises."
She Enjoys Fresh Fruit
Isoardi loves snacking on a fruit bowl with fresh kiwis, which are a heart-healthy food. "Including kiwi fruit as part of a healthy diet may support your heart health," says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. "This is because consuming them appears to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) – the so-called 'good' cholesterol, reduces other blood triglycerides (fats) and reduces platelet aggregation, which may over time lead to atherosclerosis. Kiwi fruit also helps manage blood pressure, thanks in part to a reduction in angiotensin-converting enzyme. Being a useful source of potassium further supports the fruit's heart-friendly properties."
She Loves Spinach
Isoardi shares recipes with her fans, including one where spinach is added to meatballs. "I used them fresh because it's always good to eat fresh vegetables in season but you can also get them frozen," she explains in the video. "Spinach is loaded with protective compounds called polyphenols," Lewin says. "Studies suggest, that along-with its vitamin content these compounds may promote cancer-protective properties. Animal studies suggest including spinach in the diet may protect against colon cancer."
