She never skips a workout.

1

Strength Training

De Castro says "consistency is key" when it comes to her weight training workouts. "Lifting weights can increase your lean body mass, which increases the number of overall calories you burn during the day," says Jacque Crockford, C.S.C.S., spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise.

2

Running

During the weeks she isn't working, de Castro likes to run every other day. Otherwise she tries to fit in at least two runs a week. "Exercise has a dramatic antidepressive effect," says David J. Linden, PhD. "It blunts the brain's response to physical and emotional stress. Voluntary exercise is the single best thing one can do to slow the cognitive decline that accompanies normal aging."

3

She Avoids Sweets

De Castro is mindful of her diet and avoids too many sweets. "When I feel like I've had all the sweets for one week, I'll try to cut back the next week," she says. "By limiting the amount of added sugars in your diet, you can cut calories without compromising nutrition," says the Mayo Clinic. "In fact, cutting back on foods with added sugars may make it easier to get the nutrients you need without exceeding your calorie goal."

4

Yoga Sessions

De Castro enjoys regular yoga sessions. "Yoga seems to have this powerful combination of the physical movement combined with the deep breathing, meditation and mindfulness aspect," says Corinna Keenmon, MD. "This total package helps us physically by increasing flexibility, along with heart and brain health. Plus, the cognitive and emotional improvements that happen over time are priceless."

5

HIIT Workouts

De Castro finds it easier to exercise when mixing it up and trying new things, such as HIIT workouts. "HIIT burns more calories during and after a workout than continuous aerobic training," says exercise physiologist and athletic trainer Scott Weiss, C.S.C.S. "The bursts of increased intensity simply increase the caloric expenditure; thus, more total calories are burned, aiding in better body composition."
