She Does Yoga

Jalil practices yoga as part of her health and wellness regimen. "The purpose of yoga is to build strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body," says board-certified osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor  Natalie Nevins, DO. "As an osteopathic physician, I focus a lot of my efforts on preventive medicine and practices, and in the body's ability to heal itself. Yoga is a great tool for staying healthy because it's based on similar principles."

Jalil loves to make chocolate at home, which is good for you in moderation. "Having a healthy relationship with all foods is important for your mind and your body," according to Johns Hopkins Health. "But beginning or creating a balanced relationship with dark chocolate, in particular, may have a significantly positive impact on your overall health. Dark chocolate contains powerful antioxidants. Among the most beneficial is a flavonol called epicatechin. Flavonols are compounds found in plants that fight inflammation and protect against cell damage caused by free radicals."

Healthy Smoothies

Jalil enjoys smoothies made with healthy fruits and vegetables. "Smoothies help you incorporate more fruits and veggies into your day, which the majority of people (90%, according to the CDC!) are lacking," says Chelsea Gloeckner, a registered dietitian with a master's in nutrition. "The fiber from fruits and veggies can help keep you full and satisfied, feed the healthy bacteria in your gut to support a healthy immune system, provide antioxidants to reduce inflammation in the body, and help keep you hydrated to provide that much-needed energy boost."

Resistance Training

Jalil enjoys challenging herself with resistance training workouts and lifting weights. "Want to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently? Strength training to the rescue! Strength training is a key component of overall health and fitness for everyone," says the Mayo Clinic. "Research shows that a single set of 12 to 15 repetitions with the proper weight can build muscle efficiently in most people and can be as effective as three sets of the same exercise. As long as you take the muscle you are working to fatigue — meaning you can't lift another repetition — you are doing the work necessary to make the muscle stronger."

5

Rock Climbing

Jalil loves rock climbing, which is a great full-body workout. "You build a lot of upper-body strength when you climb, especially in the hands and fingers," says physical therapist Zack DiCristino. "But a lot of people don't realize that if you're using proper technique, your lower body gets quite a workout, too, with all of the squatting and jumping."
