She’s Motivated

In an interview with Coveteur, Cate opened up about how she trained for Thor: Ragnarok. She says that she was extremely motivated to do this. “I thought, ‘I really want to stick to this,’ and of course as life tramples on, it’s been sporadic, but I really want to get back to that place,” she says. “It’s actually easier to do a little bit every day. … And the thing is, I’m like everybody — it’s so hard to start. But once you start doing a little bit, like walking to work, it actually gives you more energy so that’s what I want to change.”

She Worked With A Trainer

Cate worked with her co-star, Chris Hemsworth’s, trainer Luke Zocchi to help her get in shape for Thor.  “I was training Chris for Thor when Cate came to set and saw the shape Chris was in so requested me,” he told Australia’s The Daily Telegraph. “Cate was so good to work with … She would work her butt off and always trained hard. Cate plays the villain Hela and basically kicks everyone’s butts.”

She Did A 20-Minute Workout

Cate tells Coveteur that she did 20-minute workouts to train for Thor: Ragnarok. “It was hideous,” she admits. “It was horrendous. It was a hardcore cardio and weights circuit, but it only lasted 20 minutes because he had to fit it in between scenes. But it was great, I actually wanted to get up at six in the morning and work with him for 20 minutes before the kids woke up, if you can believe it. It sounds bizarre. I’m not doing that at the moment, but I really do want to get back to it.”

She Did Circuits

In an interview with Healthista, Luke opened up about the circuit training he did with Cate. “The type of training was based on strength training primarily, but we did it in a circuit style which is multiple exercises before resting. This got her working as hard as possible in the limited time we had. I also added in some boxing sessions to help with all the fight scenes Cate had to learn in the movie. We focused on a lot of body weighted functional exercises and I think every one really benefits from this type of training.”

She Does Pilates

Cate shared some of her favorite workouts in an interview with The Cut. “I really like Pilates,” she says. “I feel like it’s made for actors’ bodies. For me, I need to do it one-on-one. I find that when you go into a big class, you actually need a guiding hand.” The Houston Methodist reports that Pilates has a lot of benefits. “The goal was to take dancers who tended to have overuse injuries from training the same motor patterns over and over again and cross train these dancers by focusing on strengthening their core muscles,” said Leanne Wonesh, an athletic trainer at Houston Methodist. “With stronger abdominal, hip and gluteal muscles, the hope was that the dancers would experience fewer overuse injuries.”

She Uses The Elliptical

Since Cate is so busy, and doesn’t always have time to go to the gym, she likes to workout at home. She shared her go-to at-home workout in her interview with The Cut. “At home we have an elliptical trainer, which is good because that’s often the only exercise I get.” Using an elliptical allows someone to workout their entire body at once. It is also a good form of cardio and aerobic exercise.

She Meditates

Cate tells The Cut that she is working on meditation. “My next step is meditation. We’ve got four sessions booked. I have this very dear friend, one of the best actors in Australia, and he started to meditate a few years ago. I told him I was worried about that because don’t you need to have that slight tension in your body to be onstage? Don’t you need to have a hunger? And he said it actually allows it to be there more. The fact that he said that, I thought, ‘okay, I’ll give it a go.'”
