She's a Committed Vegan
Silverstone has been a strict vegan for decades, and credits her meat-free diet as the best thing that ever happened to her. "I always bring everything back to diet," she says. "When I don't eat well, I don't feel well, and then my moods go all over the place." "Changes to your diet may make some difference to your general mood or sense of well-being, but they're not a substitute for treatment. Lifestyle changes, such as improving sleep habits, increasing social support, using stress-reduction techniques and getting regular exercise, also may help," says the Mayo Clinic.
She Loves Her Veggies
Silverstone eats plant-based carbs every single day. "I would say you want to make sure that you're eating whole grains, brown rice, quinoa," she says. "I want to make sure that you're eating greens, steamed, sautéed, blanched, kale, bok choy, collards, broccoli, getting all the greens into you … And then beans, you want to eat beans every single day."
She Loves Fermented Foods
Fermented foods are good for your gut health, something Silverstone appreciates. "Eat these healing and blood cleansing foods on a regular basis: leafy greens such as kale, bok choy, collards, and watercress. Also, so important are seaweed, miso soup, cultured fermented veggies, a variety of whole grains, and adzuki beans," she says. "With these ingredients, you can come up with some seriously delicious, healing, and glow-y recipes."
Exercising In Nature
Silverstone thrives when she's enjoying the fresh air outdoors. "Exercise is an important part of my lifestyle," she says. "I love yoga, circuit training, Pilates and walking in nature. My son Bear and I enjoy hiking together with the dogs and dance parties definitely happen on a regular basis around here! Getting movement in my body helps me feel energized and refreshed."
She Loves Walking Her Dogs
Silverstone is a big fan of taking walks with her pups. "I love going to dance class, and I really love yoga. When I do it I'm so happy," she says. "I also like going on walks — I walk my dogs almost every single day, that's just part of being a mama to a dog. It's good to move and be outside in the air."
She's a Salad Maestro
Silverstone loves to eat salad, and considers herself quite the expert on making them. "I'm quite a professional salad maker," Silverstone says. "I always drizzle lemon or an orange, olive oil, and flaxseed oil because it makes it buttery. Then umeboshi plum vinegar. Sometimes it's nice to put some kimchi on the side, and I really love the combination of red onions and raisins. I also love cilantro, so lots of that."
She Avoids the Gym
Silverstone prefers outdoorsy workouts over going to the gym. "I won't go to a gym, unless it's to take a very cool spin class," she says. "Exercise should be an expression of how you feel." The benefits of any activity are, says the Cleveland Clinic:
- "Helps your muscles get stronger after illness and bed rest
- Helps you heart and cardiovascular system work more efficiently
- Gives you more energy
- Increases your ability to do regular activities without getting tired
- Improves your balance and flexibility
- Helps you feel good about yourself
- Maintains muscle tone and improves your posture
- Increases the amount of calories you use. This helps you stay at a healthy weight."
