Low Carb Diet
Pantoja frequently adapts a low-carb diet when she wants to lose weight. "People have a remarkably healthy response to these diets," says Jeff Volek, PhD, RD. "The body responds in a really elegant way. When you limit carbohydrates, the body gets really good at burning its own body fat because it doesn't have a lot of sugar to burn for fuel."
She's a Dancer
Pantoja is a skilled dancer, which is a great workout. "We know that movement is good for everyone," says Emily Sandow, supervisor of dance physical therapy at NYU Langone's Harkness Center for Dance Injuries. "A healthy lifestyle is integrating the mind, body and soul relationship, and dance has all of those characteristics. Everyone can do something, even if it's just you just tapping your foot. Everyone can do something where they can move their body to music, and that's really valuable."
Jump Rope
Pantoja loves to jump rope for some fun cardio. "Aerobic exercise and resistance training are the most important for heart health," says Johns Hopkins exercise physiologist Kerry J. Stewart, Ed.D. "Although flexibility doesn't contribute directly to heart health, it's nevertheless important because it provides a good foundation for performing aerobic and strength exercises more effectively."
Resistance Training
Resistance training is the core element of Pantoja's workouts. "Studies show that there are no benefit changes between machines, free weights, and resistance bands," says Hayden Steele, NSCA-C.P.T., C.S.C.S. "Optimally, they would all be used together [in a training regimen], but when you look at strength benefits, you can't say that dumbbells are more effective than resistance bands. They just offer the same benefits for less money."
Sit Ups
Pantoja incorporates sit ups into her workout routine. "Just because sit ups won't get rid of your belly fat doesn't mean you should skip them!" says Karen Cooper, DO. "Sit ups are essential for strengthening your core — something that's obvious. But your core is responsible for so much more than those classic "six pack" abs many strive for. A strong core can reduce back pain, improve balance and increase your flexibility. Core muscles also support your hips and pelvis. Finally, a strong core will help you build good posture."
