She Puts Her Feelings In Her Music
Bailey opened up about her new album in an interview with Cosmopolitan. She says that she has put some of her feelings into her music. "Those moments where I've been scared to articulate what I feel inside, I put it into the music. Now people get to hear my innermost thoughts within these songs, which are all the moments where I've been scared to speak up or explain how I feel. There were moments I was heartbroken, not only through romantic relationships but friendships, family, and people I thought I could trust. In Pieces is about how we put ourselves back together after feeling like the world breaks you down. It's therapeutic knowing that people who inspired some of these songs will hear them. It gives me my power back."
She's Focusing On Herself
Bailey tells Cosmopolitan that she has started to focus on herself. "I'm used to people-pleasing, putting my feelings on the back burner, and being the bigger person," she explains. "Now I'm learning to just be. It's been freeing. I've grown and evolved so much the past three years, which were the hardest of my life. I had to experience those hard moments so I could create this body of work."
She Works On Her Mental Health
Bailey also told Cosmopolitan that she is working on her mental health. "I wouldn't say I was depressed because I've been there and know that feeling," Bailey revealed. "But I definitely wasn't happy. I was in a state of confusion. That wasn't even too long ago, which is crazy. It's so important for us to talk about mental health, seeing someone or talking to someone, and getting help outside of ourselves. Sometimes we can't carry the load all on our own."
She Has Support
Bailey has a lot of support from her family. Particularly, her sister, Halle. "She shows up for me in every way," she tells Cosmopolitan of her sister. "We're constantly on FaceTime, texting, and sending each other funny memes to lift each other up in this lifestyle and this world that can sometimes feel suffocating. I'm proud of us—what we're doing together and separately. We're still attached at the hip, but I think neither of us really knew who the other was without the other one."
She Listens To Herself
Bailey tells Rolling Stone that she is no longer listening to other people's opinions when it comes to her music. "When I had a creative block for the album, that was because I was so caught up in having my eyes and ears on what I think people expect from me and caring too much. That's when my creativity and artistry got suffocated and I wasn't creating the way that I was meant to. I feel like we all have a gift and we're all vessels of that gift. When I worry too much about outside opinions, or who can I please the most or who will I not please, that will defeat the whole purpose of what art is about. Not everybody's supposed to like art. It's all about perspective. And, you know, not everybody will see or hear the same thing the same."
