Coffee In the AM

Leray starts her day with coffee—Colombian coffee is her favorite. "Almost two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease are women," says Johns Hopkins Medicine. "But the caffeine in two cups of coffee may provide significant protection against developing the condition. In fact, researchers found that women age 65 and older who drank two to three cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop dementia in general."

Eggs For Breakfast

Leray enjoys eggs and potatoes for breakfast. "Eggs contain protein, energy, vitamins and minerals which are all good for your body – because they contain everything a chick needs to grow and develop before hatching," says Heart UK. "Some are fortified with omega 3s."

Baking At Home

Leray says she likes to bake at home. "Baking is an opportunity to clear our heads and de-stress," says Pamela Honsberger, MD. "When you focus your attention on an activity like baking, you're more present in the moment and less focused on stressors of the past or future."

Pickles

Leray's favorite snack is homemade pickles, made with cucumbers and rice vinegar. "To be a filling snack, I would suggest pairing pickles with a little bit of protein, like a handful of nuts or a small piece of cheese," says Devon Peart, MHSc, BASc, RD. "The protein will help make that very low-calorie food a little bit more filling. And if you're enjoying pickles, then you should watch your salt intake for the rest of the day."

5

Chicken and Rice

Leray loves chicken and jasmine rice for a hearty meal. "Enriched white rice does contain folate (folic acid), which is recommended for pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding," says the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "Folic acid helps your body make DNA and other genetic material, and supports cell division. White rice typically contains more calcium and iron from artificial fortification."
