Ginger Tea
Michele is a big fan of ginger tea. "Ginger tea is probably most well-known for its potential to soothe digestive issues, and in particular for helping ease nausea," says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. "One study even suggests it may be just as effective as some medications, but with fewer side effects, in the case of morning sickness."
Salad and Protein
Michele will make a big salad of assorted vegetables and add high quality protein like chicken or fish. "It is important for individuals to consume protein every day," says dietitian Nancy Waldeck. "Daily protein intake plays a role in keeping your cells in good shape and should be part of your daily health maintenance plan."
Lots of Vegetables
Michele eats plenty of vegetables, but her meals are never boring—one recipe she loves to make is delicious stuffed peppers. "Bell peppers contribute modest amounts of iron but are remarkably rich in vitamin C, half a pepper supplying as much as 100mg," says registered nutritionist Kerry Torrens. "This is significant because vitamin C increases the absorption of iron in the gut and numerous studies confirm that diets high in vitamin C-rich fruit and vegetables results in a greater iron uptake. Bell peppers help further because they contain vitamin B6 which is needed to make hemoglobin, the protein which carries oxygen around the body."
So Many Eggs
Michele enjoys delicious eggs as part of a healthy breakfast or lunch. "Both the egg white and yolk are rich in nutrients, including proteins, vitamins and minerals," says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. "The yolk contains fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins D and E) and essential fatty acids; while most of the protein is found in the egg white."
Fresh Fruit
Michele loves fresh fruit, especially melon and watermelon. "Did you know watermelon has more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable?" says Kristi Wempen, RDN. "Lycopene is an antioxidant linked to decreased risk of cancer, heart disease and age-related eye disorders."
