She Works Out With Her Mom
When Purnell hits the gym, she doesn't always like to go alone. She likes to go with her mom. Purnell posted this photo on Instagram of herself and her mom at the gym. She captioned the post, "Working out with mama!" Working out with a friend, or your mom, has a lot of benefits. You are more likely to stick to your sessions if you make a gym date with someone else. Having a loved one there can also help motivate and support you.
She Got Help For Her Mental Health
Purnell is open about her struggles with her mental health. She says that she was able to get help when she was a teenager. Purnell tells Standard.co, "When I was 15 or 16 I had a bad experience at school — some issues with other classmates and somebody I was seeing, we don't need to go into it. I started self-harming and did that for a long time until my mum caught me and I started to learn about it."
She Took A Break From Acting
Purnell has been acting since she was a child. She tells IntoTheGloss.com that she actually decided to take a break from acting when she got older, instead of going out to play more mature roles. She says that this helped her find her love of acting again. "Every child actor has to go through the transition to adult actor. I was 11 when I got Never Let Me Go—I grew up pretty fast. As tempting as it is to just keep working, if you want to make the transition in a healthy, constructive way, it is important to step out. I had gotten to the point where I was not getting the kinds of scripts I wanted—it was the girlfriend of the main guy, or the one who was just there to be objectified—so I took some time off to recalibrate."
She Wrote About Her Mental Health
One of the things Purnell did on her career break was write a book. She says that she wanted to write about her mental health, specifically from a scientific perspective. She tells IntoTheGloss.com, "Another thing that happened in my time off was that I started writing a nonfiction book on mental health with my therapist. We're approaching the subject from two points of view—there's a side of it that's based on personal experience, but then there's another side that's scientific."
She Makes Time For Self-Care
Despite Purnell's busy schedule, she always makes time for self-care. Purnell revealed her favorite pastimes to IntoTheGloss. "For me, self-care is about committing to myself. The actual bits and bobs matter less than actually carving out one hour a week and dedicating that time to myself. It's really about digging deep, and learning to give myself things. Little pep talks in the mirror, repeating affirmations, and setting goals help with that. I'll do a face mask, take vitamins, moisturize, or shave my legs, but my absolute favorite thing to do is to light a candle and spend an hour reading a chapter of a book that I love. It's not time that I'm on my phone, or reading emails, or doing laundry, or dishes, or calling that friend who really needs me—because I need me, too."
