She Runs Every Day
Brookes says she goes for a run every day. "All you need is a pair of shoes and some time," says Anu Gaba, MD, an oncologist at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, North Dakota. "Even if you only have 15 or 20 minutes, that's a good place to start."
But First, Coffee
Brookes enjoys her daily cup of hot coffee. "Almost two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer's disease are women," says Johns Hopkins Medicine. "But the caffeine in two cups of coffee may provide significant protection against developing the condition. In fact, researchers found that women age 65 and older who drank two to three cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop dementia in general."
Yoga Sessions
Brookes loves yoga, especially power yoga. "Yoga seems to have this powerful combination of the physical movement combined with the deep breathing, meditation and mindfulness aspect," says Corinna Keenmon, MD. "This total package helps us physically by increasing flexibility, along with heart and brain health. Plus, the cognitive and emotional improvements that happen over time are priceless."
Barre Classes
Brookes loves the challenge barre classes offer. "Barre's combination of high reps with low weights and stabilization hits all the major muscle groups in a single class," says barre instructor Emily Sferra. "In barre workouts, we're often targeting a specific area of the body, like the inner thighs, while using supporting muscle groups, like the core, to stabilize the movement. The combination of stabilization and endurance (high reps) creates an insanely effective workout that hits all the major muscle groups and leaves you with an incredible burn in less than an hour."
Eye Cream Is a Must
Brookes is militant about using eye cream, the earlier the better. "Always use an eye cream," she says. "Women age quicker than men so we have to start looking after our eyes at an early age. I started using it when I was 18! My favorite is one from an Australian natural cosmetics range called Arbonne."
