In the captivating world of "House of the Dragon," the stars behind the characters bring their unique talents, challenges, and passions to the forefront. From Emma D’Arcy's transformation with a blond wig to Matt Smith's quest for decisiveness, each actor offers a glimpse into their off-screen lives. Eve Best advocates for more diverse roles for older women, while Olivia Cooke shares her exercise routine for mental well-being. Bethany Antonia enjoys seaside walks, and Sonoya Mizuno leans on her supportive family. Steve Toussaint confronts backlash and historical misperceptions, and Tom Glynn-Carney prioritizes audience enjoyment over stardom.

1. Emma D’Arcy

Los,Angeles,-,Jul,22:,Emma,D'arcy,Arrives,For,HboísShutterstock

Emma D’Arcy plays the lead role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryan. Before the show came out, D’Arcy was worried about losing their anonymity. They told The Hollywood Reporter that the blond wig they wear in the show has helped them not be recognized as much. "I'm also very lucky. That wig is a blessing; people don’t recognize me, so my day-to-day is broadly unchanged, which I feel very grateful for. I get asked if I’m me because I look quite different in real life, which actually presents a possible out because there’s a temptation to say, 'No, but I get that all the time.'"

2. Matt Smith

Los,Angeles,-,Sep,16:,Matt,Smith,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Matt Smith plays Daemon Targaryan on the show. In a piece for Esquire, he revealed that he can be indecisive, and would like to work on that. “I’d like to try to cut away the bullshit. Become more acute. My dad used to tell me, ‘There’s no such thing as a bad decision. The only bad decision is no decision.’ And that’s true, I think.”

3. Eve Best

Los,Angeles,-,Jul,22:,Eve,Best,Arrives,For,HboísShutterstock

Eve Best plays Rhaenys Targaryan on the show. She told The Guardian that she would like more options for roles of older women. “The speed of change needs to be snappier. I’m longing to see more women of around my age taking leads in romances, adventures or dramas in which they’re not being mothers, sidekicks or detectives. Sexy, interesting women who are over 40 – there are a lot of us out there and I’d like to see much more of us on screen.”

4. Olivia Cooke

Los,Angeles,-,Jul,22:,Olivia,Cooke,Arrives,For,HboísShutterstock

Olivia Cooke plays the main role of Alicent Hightower. She tells Byrdie that she has to push herself to include exercise in her routine, and shared her favorites. “I wish it wasn’t the case, but exercise feels like I’m shoveling serotonin and dopamine directly into my brain. It’s just a pain in the arse to force myself to do it. I can be slobbish and put it off for a few days or a week if I’m working, but then I really start to feel the effects of that mentally. Sometimes I'll do a half-hour to 45-minute blast, either following a video from Madfit on YouTube or a guided yoga class on Glo. Or, if I’m not in the mood to be told what to do, I’ll make it up as I go along listening to the radio.

5. Bethany Antonia

Korean Skincare Brand Dr.Jart+ Launches NEW Premium BB Beauty BalmDave Benett/Getty Images

Bethany Antonia plays the role of Lady Baela Targaryan. She likes to walk to stay in shape. Antonia also has a dog, so she does a lot of walking. She shared this photo and video on Instagram of herself and her dog walking by the beach in Wales. Antonia captioned the post, “Early morning beaches and a little singing pooch = the reset weekend of dreams.”

6. Sonoya Mizuno

Los,Angeles,-,Jan,09:,Sonoya,Mizuno,{object},Arrives,ForShutterstock

Sonoya Mizuno plays the character Mysaria. She has a very supportive family, and they helped her when she was struggling on set. “There were days that I personally found very difficult,” she says to Glamour. “But because the girls were there, my sisters were there, those days were much easier to handle.

7. Steve Toussaint

Los,Angeles,,Usa.,July,27,,2022:,Steve,Toussaint,At,TheShutterstock

Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon. Unfortunately, he received a lot of backlash for being cast, and hit back in an interview with Men’s Health. "So many people are basing their idea of the history of this country on a few films and stuff that were made in the '50s, '60s and '70s, which don't bear any resemblance to the truth," Toussaint said. "Historically, people of my hue and your hue, we didn't just turn up here in the '70s or the '60s. There was a point when the ruler of his country, 'the Caesar,' was an African man."

8. Tom Glynn-Carney

London,,Uk.,April,29,,2019:,Tom,Glynn-carney,Arriving,For,TheShutterstock

Tom Glynn-Carney plays Aegon Targaryan on the show. He talked about being on the show to Schon Magazine. “I’m not interested in stardom or fame. As long as people enjoy the show, form relationships with the characters and manage to escape for an hour on a Sunday/Monday night, I’m happy and that’s my job done.”

9. Paddy Considine

Los,Angeles,-,Jul,22:,Paddy,Considine,Arrives,For,HboísShutterstock

Paddy Considine played Viserys Targaryan on the show’s first season. He also starred in the film Journeyman, which is about boxing. Considine made sure to get in shape for the role, and trained at a gym. “We got him on a healthy diet with someone cooking his food,” Considine’s trainer, Dominic Ingle, told The Star. “It set him off to keep that healthy lifestyle.”

10. Ryan Corr

Shutterstock

Ryan Corr played Harwin Strong on the first season. He is a supporter of gay marriage, and talked about this to The Guardian. “Who someone chooses to love is their right and it should be acknowledged in the society we live in. I think we are backwards as a country if we don’t start to do something about that now. Look how long it took to do something about Indigenous rights and the apology. The rest of the world is moving past us in a number of ways, both racially and within gender and sexual equality and I think we need to work on it.”

House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke is taking some time for herself to enjoy the beach and the sunshine. Cooke, 29, shared pictures of herself wearing a swimsuit and spending time on the shore, looking happy with her friends. “My job is beach,” she captioned the post. “And what a good job you do at beach!” a fan commented. Cooke is the first to admit she isn’t crazy about working out—here’s her unique attitude to health and wellness.

1. Working Out For Serotonin

Close,Up,Image,Of,Attractive,Fit,Woman,In,GymShutterstock

Cooke doesn’t always work out diligently, but feels so much better when she does. “I wish it wasn’t the case, but exercise feels like I’m shoveling serotonin and dopamine directly into my brain,” she says. “It’s just a pain to force myself to do it. I can be slobbish and put it off for a few days or a week if I’m working, but then I really start to feel the effects of that mentally. Sometimes I'll do a half-hour to 45-minute blast, either following a video from Madfit on YouTube or a guided yoga class on Glo. Or, if I’m not in the mood to be told what to do, I’ll make it up as I go along listening to the radio.”

2. Skincare Self-Love

Los,Angeles,-,Jul,22:,Olivia,Cooke,Arrives,For,HboísShutterstock

Cooke’s full skincare routine is a true ritual of self-love. “I start off putting rosehip oil all over my face and neck and giving myself a nice massage,” she says. “I use hands at first, and then I have that Sarah Chapman device that you roll across your face. I bought it two years ago and completely forgot I had it until I found it in the back of my drawer the other day. I then cleanse with CeraVe, the normal to oily one. Then I either apply the 111Skin Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Booster ($135) if I’m feeling a bit dry or just go straight to CeraVe’s facial moisturizer with SPF25—the only SPF I’ve found to date to not make me break out. Then before bed, I’ll double cleanse with CeraVe, apply Votary’s Clarifying Facial Oil ($102) by patting it onto the hot spots, then slather myself with rosehip oil or a heavier moisturizer if I’m feeling a bit dryer in the winter.”

3. Training For Role

Los,Angeles,-,Oct,27:,Olivia,Cooke,Arrives,For,TheShutterstock

Celebrity trainers Ryan and Eric Johnson trained Cooke for her role in Ready Player One. "The big thing that we tried to incorporate was a lot of movement flow, a lot of jump training, a lot of absorbing impacts," they said. "After our first couple sessions, she would come back and joke around and laugh about how she would have to hold on to the railing walking down the subway stairs, and then by the end of the six weeks, subway legs were no longer a thing, and Olivia was running up and down the stairs after a crushing 75-minute workout with ease."

4. Reading For Pleasure

London,,England,,Uk,-,August,15,,2022:,Olivia,Cooke,AttendsShutterstock

Cooke loves to read for pleasure. “I think when you're reading for you, a lot of times it’s like, ‘Would I as Olivia Cooke be able to fit into this world, or would I be able to execute this well, or does it need another actor to play it entirely?’ You are thinking in a way where it's all coming from the prism of you,” she says. “When I read for fun, it's a whole plethora of different worlds. I’m partway through Girl Woman Other, the Bernadine Evaristo book, which is beautiful and so well-written.”

5. Intense Fanbase

Cooke finds the Game of Thrones fandom challenging at times. “The Game of Thrones fans have been quite noisy, and having to block your ears and eyes from that has been a challenge,” she says. “It’s like the school playground – you want to know what everyone is saying about you and what’s been said… I was self-flagellating. It’s mad because what they’re talking about is this fantasy version of me that doesn’t exist whatsoever. People talk about you like they know you and it’s just so odd. All you can do is be as authentic as possible.”

It's good to have that one day where you eat what you want, because then you work towards it.”

Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan is having fun at the beach, much to the envy of her friends and social media followers. Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy on the HBO megahit, shared a very cute picture of herself doing an impressive handstand on the beach, wearing a blue and lilac bathing suit. “Seaside upside,” she captioned the post. “Handstand envy Gem 🙃 Could never master the art 🤷‍♀️😍,” a fan commented. Here’s how she feels about her time on GoT, and taking on high-intensity roles.

1. No Crazy Stunts

London,,Uk.,February,10,,2019:,Gemma,Whelan,Arriving,For,TheShutterstock

Whelan considers herself to be a fit, active person, but draws the line at doing her own stunts. “I think I used to be quite gung ho about it like ‘Of course, I’ll try anything’ whereas now I’m very much appreciative of the help from the stunt doubles,” she says. “I’m fit, I love running, I think there are a few I definitely could but it’s not my job. There are people properly trained to do all the extreme stuff, I think I’ll leave it to them… As I said, it’s a necessity and they’re expertly trained. I’m not a method actor by any stretch, I leave work at work. There have been some roles that are quite consuming and then a lot to get over but I’ve never really been at the point where I couldn’t shake them off. I’d think I’d be concerned if that was the case.”

2. Costume Dramas

Whelan enjoys the immersion she gets from period and costume dramas. “For period dramas, the costumes and the words do a lot of the heavy lifting,” she says. “When the writing is so good but also so much different than the modern way of speaking, and then these costumes that are perfectly engineered to fit you in this setting, the character feels more natural than anything. I’ve loved them all for different reasons, they’re all a part of me but I do always miss going to Game of Thrones because the rhythm of my year became such as going to Belfast and meeting up with the—we were like a family, so meeting up with them over there. And Gentleman Jack as well, I was really sorry that didn’t go ahead for a third season.”

3. Working Mother

Los,Angeles,,Ca.,July,12,,2017:,Actress,Gemma,Whelan,AtShutterstock

Whelan was thankful to return to Game of Thrones with the support of the team when she had a baby. “I thought I’d be on the shelf for a little while after having the baby, which is fine, but I was very lucky,” she says. “It was similar with Game of Thrones, actually. I went back with my daughter and she was six weeks old and they allowed for breastfeeding… That should just be a normal thing – you have a child and you have to feed it but you’re working as well.”

4. Swimming In the Sea

Whelan loves swimming in the sea, especially in beautiful Cornwall, UK. “Happiest most beautiful relaxing time with friends in this stunning little place. Thank you so much @portwrinkleholidays for the most extraordinary home for the weekend and the freshest air and the warmest hot tub and the coolest sea swim - we will be back. Highly recommend for a complete escape and switch off,” she captioned an Instagram post.

5. Friends Forever

Whelan is still friends with her Game of Thrones costars—research shows close, ongoing friendships are incredibly beneficial for health. “Alfie [Allen] and Emelia [Clarke] are dear pals and I see Iain Glenn around here because he lives not far from where I live,” she says. “It was a long time. We knew each other for a span of about 10 years and it was a family… I just loved every single moment… it was very, very special.”

Leonie Hanne is living her best life in Thailand – in her swimsuit. In a new social media post, the German model flaunts her fantastic figure in a $750 Missoni bathing suit while enjoying a boating day in the tropics. “She dreamed of a tropical adventure 🦋,” she captioned the series of Instagram snaps. “Stunning,” commented one of her followers. ”So beautiful,” added another. How does she approach diet, fitness, and self-care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

Coffee

Leonie enjoys the perks of caffeine. In one of her posts from Thailand, she drinks a cup of coffee at the poolside. According to the Cleveland Clinic, drinking coffee in moderation has several benefits. “It acts on your brain to improve memory, mood, reaction times, and mental function,” they say, citing a study finding that caffeine can improve endurance and performance during exercise. It is also antioxidant-rich, can ward off diabetes, prevent neurologic disease, lower cancer risk, and ward off depression, they point out.

Pilates

Leonie does Pilates at the super exclusive London studio Pilates in the Clouds. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress, and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

At-Home Workouts

Leonie tries to get a workout in daily, preferably in the morning. I still try to get up early to maintain a sense of routine. I start every day with a quick at-home workout and a homemade acai bowl, before starting work on emails and content creation. I’ve been getting really into TikTok lately, it’s funny and keeps me feeling energised!” she told Arcadia.

Community

It takes a village, according to Leonie. “Community is key! The people you surround yourself with are more important than ever, as we are all trying to find ways to stay connected without being physically present. Speaking to people either on the phone or through social media can shift your mindset and motivation more than ever before,” she says.

Small, Healthy Habits

Leonie focuses on maintaining small, healthy habits. “Do something every day that brings you joy. Even if that means having something small to look forward to, like having your favourite snacks around the house or changing into an outfit that makes you feel good about yourself,” she says.

Sophie Piper is embracing island life – in her swimsuit. In a new social media post, the Love Island beauty shows off her fantastic figure in a swimsuit during a tropical vacation at Kandima Maldives with Josh Ritchie. “Island life,” she captioned the series of Instagram snaps taken at the picturesque resort. How does she approach diet, fitness, and self-care? Here is everything you need to know about her lifestyle habits.

She Doesn't Go Under the Knife

Sophie claims she hasn’t gone under the knife. “It’s your own body, you can do what you want to,” she told Grazia, weighing in on the show’s reputation for girls getting work done. “I wouldn’t have surgery myself; I don’t want it. I’ve got such a low pain tolerance as well; I’d be squirming around.”

She Gets Her Steps In

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Sophie loves paddle boarding. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) agrees that paddle boarding is great for the core and cardio. Water sports can burn an average of 385 calories for a 140-pound male and 436 calories for a female of the same size, per a study conducted by Arizona State University.

She Skis

When Sophie hits the mountains, she throws on a pair of skis. “Ski club,” she captioned a photo. Research has linked downhill skiing to several health benefits. In addition to promoting physical fitness, it may decrease the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Studies have also found that the more frequently a person skis, the prevalence of known hypercholesterolemia, systemic hypertension, diabetes, the frequency of mental stress, and the occurrence of memory deficits decline.

Hembrow is seen doing a lot of exercises with weights in her Instagram video. ACE Fitness states that using weights to workout has a lot of benefits. “Strength training with heavy weights improves muscle definition. Muscle definition occurs as the result of muscles remaining in a state of semi-contraction and heavy strength training recruits the larger type II muscle fibers responsible for a muscle’s appearance.”

She Tracks Her Meals

Hembrow likes to track her meals on her app. She talked about the benefits of this in the caption of this “What I Eat In A Day” Instagram video. “Make sure to take advantage of the calorie/macro tracking features in the @tammyfitapp during this challenge guys. It can be really helpful in reaching specific goals quicker. And it also can help educate you on your food choices when it comes to nutrition, ratios, hidden calories, overeating or under eating etc. honestly I’d recommend any beginner try it out just to get a good feel for how you’re fuelling your body!! I feel like when people think of ‘meal tracking’ it can be seen as something that seems restrictive or something only bodybuilders do. When in reality it can be such a helpful tool and you can learn things that will actually encourage long term habits 🫶🏼🫶🏼”
