1. She Loves Lemons
Cirio enjoys incorporating lemons into her diet, especially adding it to water. “If you like to add lemon juice to your water to improve the taste or another reason, there is no right or wrong method. Diluting lemon juice in water can start the day right,” according to UPMC Health. “Just a cup or two of warm water and lemon juice can improve digestion and reduce heartburn, while stimulating the production of stomach bile and acid. Lemon juice and water also serves as a good substitute to coffee as it can give you the same energy boost without the jitters or midday crash.”
2. She Makes Her Own Green Juice
Cirio loves to make green juice with nutritious additions such as cilantro. “Cilantro, a native of southwest Asia and North Africa, contains high levels of antioxidants and acts as a digestive aid, according to the Utah State University Extension Service,” says Tracey Roizman, D.C. “This flavorful herb also helps prevent urinary tract infections and has antibacterial effects on bacteria and fungi. Additionally, cilantro demonstrated the ability to detoxify mercury from contaminated ground water in a test tube study published in the February 2005 issue of the ‘Journal of Hazardous Materials.’ Researchers concluded that cilantro shows promise as a natural method of water purification.”
3. She Does Resistance Training
Cirio likes to add resistance training to her workouts. “As you incorporate strength training exercises into your fitness routine, you may notice improvement in your strength over time,” says the Mayo Clinic. “As your muscle mass increases, you'll likely be able to lift weight more easily and for longer periods of time. If you keep it up, you can continue to increase your strength, even if you're not in shape when you begin.”
4. She Loves Coconut
Cirio is passionate about the health benefits of coconut, both for food and for skincare. “Coconuts contain significant amounts of fat, but unlike other nuts, they provide fat that is mostly in the form of medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs) – in particular, one called lauric acid,” says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. “What this means is that the fatty acids in coconut oil are made up of a chain of six to 12 carbon atoms, as opposed to the more than 12 found in long-chain fatty acids. This difference in structure has all sorts of implications, from how the fat in coconut milk is digested to how it may influence your body.”
5. She Loves Zumba Workouts
Cirio loves to mix up her workouts by adding Zumba dance classes. “Dancing is accessible to everybody,” says Dr. Lauren Elson, a former professional dancer who specializes in sports and rehabilitation medicine at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. “People who can’t stand can use the rest of their body while seated, people who have lost movement in their arms can dance with their torso and legs. It’s a way to connect to your own body, to music, and to other people. It just depends on whatever your goals are. But we know that there are so many benefits of dancing — cognitive, physical, and social — that it merits consideration by everybody.”
