Disciplined About Exercise
Chiu admits that working out isn't always easy, but she maintains discipline when motivation is low. "Usually, when you're working out, the hardest part is the first 8 minutes," she says. "That's really your struggle if you stop or if you keep going. Once you get past the first 8 minutes, you'll want to run or bike. Just get over it and you'll be fine."
Spinning
Chiu loves taking spinning classes. "The muscle benefits of indoor cycling are that the push and pull movement of the legs targets all the main sagittal plane prime mover muscles," according to the University of Warwick. "The hamstrings, calves, quadriceps and glutes are constantly engaged."
Pilates
Chiu incorporates Pilates into her workout routine. "We humans tend to live along a single plane of movement, working the same muscles every day," says Leanne Wonesh, an athletic trainer at Houston Methodist. "These repetitive movements are what make us so leg and chest dominant. The goal of Pilates is to balance your muscles by targeting and strengthening the ones you don't usually use in your day-to-day life but would benefit from them being stronger."
Running
Chiu loves running, and even takes part in marathons. Running has both mental and physical benefits, experts say. "Exercise has a dramatic antidepressive effect," says David J. Linden, PhD. "It blunts the brain's response to physical and emotional stress."
No Food Restrictions
Chiu refuses to diet, instead balancing her diet out with her workouts. "I love chips!" she says. "There is no diet. I eat all I want and I pay for it during the workout. Just balance."
