She is obsessed with quinoa.

1

Coffee and Carbs

Bernal's typical breakfast consists of a hot latte and some sort of carbohydrate, such as a sandwich, or even a slice of pizza. "Most Americans love to hate carbs. I am not one of them," says Tamara Duker Freuman, MS, RD, CDN. "In fact, I recommend that my patients always include a good portion of carbs with breakfast when they're seeking weight loss and better blood sugar control. That's right: I believe carbs are so important that they deserve to be embraced early in the day. Really! I advise my patients to seek out the highest-quality carbs – those high in fiber, minimally processed and very low in added sugar – to include in their breakfasts."

2

Quinoa Lover

Bernal eats quinoa with almost every meal, including snacks. "Quinoa is high in anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, which make it potentially beneficial for human health in the prevention and treatment of disease," says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. "Quinoa contains small amounts of the heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids and, in comparison to common cereals, has a higher content of monounsaturated fat."

Ginger Soup and Salmon

Bernal enjoys ginger soup and salmon for a typical lunch or dinner (with quinoa, of course!). "Salmon is a good source of protein, which is important for maintaining bone health, preventing muscle loss and helping the body heal and repair," Lewin says. "Its rich astaxanthin content may help maintain skin elasticity, reduce the signs of aging and protect the skin against UV damage."

4

Eggs For a Snack

Bernal enjoys eggs and bangús (milkfish) for a snack. "Eggs are one of the best dietary sources of choline," Lewin says. "This little talked about nutrient is needed by everyone of us for the formation of cell membranes and for brain function, including memory. It's especially important during pregnancy and breastfeeding, when an adequate supply of choline is essential for normal brain development."

5

Full-body HIIT Workouts

Bernal is a big fan of HIIT workouts. "HIIT is a great regimen for people who are young and healthy. If you're older or have heart disease, check with your doctor before trying it," says Dr. I-Min Lee, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an expert on the role of physical activity in preventing disease. "If doing HIIT fits in with your lifestyle, go for it. But the most important thing is to find an activity you enjoy and to keep doing it."
