1

Gym Three Times a Week

Verzosa hits the gym at least three times a week, no matter what. She mixes up her workouts, but never skips cardio. "I make sure to move every day," she says. "I do many things. I do a lot of cardio."

Cycling

Verzosa enjoys cycling for some fun cardio. "Riding a bike is a low-impact, high-cardio exercise that's inclusive of all fitness levels," says certified personal trainer Sara Fruendt. "Bike riding is also easier on your joints and great for athletes recovering from injuries… Indoor biking allows you to see your markers such as miles, time, and resistance, but requires you to independently change these settings versus outdoors where you ride with the natural terrain and are exposed to different inclines. Both increase cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, and strength, but outdoor biking focuses more on your core as you are dealing with different terrain versus indoor, which is focused more on the lower-body."

Weights

Verzosa incorporates weights and resistance training into her workouts. "The bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons in your musculoskeletal system all work together, and they either become stronger together or weaker together," says Dr. Wayne Westcott, professor of exercise science at Quincy College in Massachusetts. "Whenever you lose muscle you automatically lose bone – they go hand in hand."

4

Balanced Diet

Verzosa follows a mostly low-carb diet. "I believe in the power of diet. I follow the 70 percent diet and 30 percent exercise rule," she says, adding that she has been "avoiding sugar, wheat, lutein, salt, and carbs or any bread for that matter. Make sure to have protein… Add color to your food. I try to eat as much fresh fruits and vegetables."

5

Water and Green Tea

Verzosa sips on plenty of water and green tea throughout the day. "Green tea contains a number of natural stimulants, including caffeine, which although not as high as coffee, may still help maintain alertness and focus," says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. "In addition to this, green tea is a source of the amino acid L-theanine, which has a relaxing effect; it does this by increasing mood-enhancing brain chemicals including GABA, dopamine and serotonin. The beneficial polyphenols of green tea may also help slow the effects of aging on the brain."
