1. Jump Rope
Prieto jumps rope as part of her workout routine. “Jumping rope improves balance and stability in the lower body,” says AFAA-certified personal trainer Stephanie Mansour. “The ankle and knee joints stabilize with every single movement."
2. Stationary Bike
Prieto rides her stationary bike for convenient cardio. “Cycling is a great cardiovascular workout to strengthen the heart, lungs, and muscles,” says trainer Erin Jalkanen. “This in turn also helps to lower blood pressure, improve your sleep, and lower stress levels.”
3. Treadmill Sessions
Prieto hits the treadmill when she’s at the gym. “There are many benefits to adding treadmill training into your exercise routine and the convenience of the machine makes it a useful tool in commercial and home gyms,” says registered physiotherapist Sam Preston. “It’s important to vary the style of your training, as there are different adaptations and responses to each stimulus you apply to the body.”
4. Coffee For Energy
Prieto enjoys the energy boost coffee provides. “Coffee may help some people maintain alertness and energy levels thanks to its caffeine content,” says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. “When coffee is consumed, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and travels to the brain where it ‘fires up’ certain neurons which may improve memory, mood, energy and cognitive function, if consumed in moderation. Other reports suggest drinking coffee before exercise may reduce rates of exertion and potentially improve athletic performance.”
5. Hiking
Prieto loves exercising in the beautiful outdoors, especially hiking. "Exercise has been shown to help improve mood, including helping us with stress, anxiety and depression while also improving our overall physical health—like helping us manage our weight or preventing adverse health conditions," says Benjamin Miller, PsyD. "There's something powerful about our connection to the natural environment. Multiple studies show that the psychological well-being of a community can be tied to access to green and blue spaces."
