Start with skin care rule No. 1 — protect yourself from the sun. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and use generous amounts of sunscreen. Then consider other skin care basics, such as avoiding strong soaps and managing stress," says the Mayo Clinic.

3. She Plays Tennis

Lewis loves to play tennis as a way to stay in shape. She has been seen at the courts on her social media. Lewis posted this video on her Instagram story of herself playing tennis with a friend. Tennis is a great cardio and aerobic exercise, as there is a lot of running around, and hand-eye coordination. "While tennis provides numerous health benefits—improved aerobic fitness and anaerobic endurance, muscular fitness (grip strength and endurance), flexibility, multiple skill parameters (balance, speed, agility and quickness), reactivity, and power—it also is psychologically demanding," says ACE Fitness.

4. She Likes To Read

In addition to exercising her body, Lewis likes to exercise her mind. One thing she likes to do is read. Lewis posted this set of photos on Instagram of herself reading by the pool. She captioned the post, “I’m finally reading Harry Potter!” "Your brain is similar to a muscle — you need to use it or you lose it. There are many things that you can do to keep your brain in shape, such as doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, reading, playing cards or putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Consider it cross-training your brain. So incorporate different activities to increase the effectiveness," says the Mayo Clinic.

5. She Teaches Herself New Skills

Lewis has a lot of hobbies. She likes to learn new skills and tricks. One thing she taught herself how to do is play the piano. "One of the higher functions that a human brain can engage with is the performance of music," says Dr. Bernard Bendok to the Mayo Clinic. "As you master those instruments, there are certain connections that grow and get enhanced in the brain. The brain likes to be challenged. We know that the more languages you know, the less your risk of dementia. And music happens to be a language."

Actress Madison Pettis is looking back on a magical August spent at the beach, as summer draws to an end. Pettis, 25, shared a series of pictures of herself enjoying the sun and sea with friends, including a snap of herself posing on the sand in a gorgeous orange bikini and trucker hat. “August slipped away into a moment in time,” she captioned the post. “Why was this literally the best month every ❤️😢 missing u alreadyyyy,” commented friend Torri Webster. How does she stay healthy and happy? Here are 5 ways the actress takes care of her health and happiness.

1. Power of Pilates

Pettis practices Pilates using a reformer machine. "A lot of people have weak core and back muscles, and strengthening these postural muscles helps balance out the tension that results from this weakness," says athletic trainer Leanne Wonesh. "This is especially great for people who sit at desks for long periods of time because having stronger core and back muscles can help pull you out of those classic desk postures that cause tension and pain in your shoulders and legs."

2. Pickleball Player

Pettis is just one of many people who have discovered a love for pickleball. “Pickleball is a great form of cardiovascular exercise that helps get your heart rate up,” says Kaitlyn Jacobson, Physician Assistant at Renown Urgent Care – Ryland. “It can lead to better cholesterol and blood pressure levels, lowering your risk of heart disease. Since pickleball is a low-impact sport and easy on the body, it’s a great way to get movement in and maintain healthy bones, joints and muscles. By playing pickleball, you’ll reduce the rate of bone loss and help conserve bone tissue.”

3. Less Is More

Less,Is,More,Minimal,Simplicity,Easiness,Plainness,ConceptShutterstock

Pettis has battled acne over the years, and is thankful for professional guidance in dealing with it. “I felt more comfortable on camera because I was working with hair and makeup artists on sets," she says. "I felt lucky that I had professionals guiding me on what was best for my skin, how to take care of it after wearing a lot of heavy makeup on set and [teaching me] the best ways to cover up my acne. I've taken notes and done my due diligence… [My skin] doesn't love when I try a bunch of new things. I've learned that less is more — if it ain't broke, don't fix it.”

4. Beauty From the Inside

Los,Angeles,-,Feb,2:,Madison,Pettis,At,The,StellaShutterstock

Pettis doesn’t feel the need to wear makeup every day. “Beauty to me means doing what makes you feel good about yourself, no matter what other people think about it,” she says. “Some days I feel great without makeup, and some days I want to do a full beat. Don’t ever let someone tell you what you should do to be beautiful. Do you.”

5. Curly Hair Maintenance

Pettis has learned how to take care of her beautiful curly hair. “One important tip for curly hair is getting it trimmed regularly and finding a hair stylist who cuts curly hair properly,” she says. “They need to cut it while it's dry, ringlet by ringlet, so you can accurately see how much is getting cut, so it doesn't end up being shorter than you wanted. For years, I got hair cuts while my hair was wet. Curly hair is longer when it’s wet and shrinks up when it’s dry. So I had a few traumatizing haircuts where it looked like they were only cutting off one inch, but once it dried, they had actually cut like four inches. Another tip is to dry curly hair with a microfiber towel to prevent frizz. Deep conditioners are also my best friend—my hair can’t get enough moisture.”

1. She Has Workout Buddies

Madison is a big fan of the workout buddy system, a great way to make exercise fun and promote accountability. Amongst her go-to fitness friends? Bryce Hall and Timothy Brundige. "How do you find the right fit? Talk to friends, co-workers, neighbors, people at the gym. Or find a buddy closer to home: What about a hike with your dog, who thinks every walk is the best walk ever? Now quality time is also fitness time. Good move! You could also try a workout app to connect with friends and others that share your goals and can help keep you motivated," says the CDC.

2. She Plays Tennis

Lewis hits the court when she wants a social and fun workout. She shared this video on her Instagram story of herself playing tennis with a friend. Why is tennis a great workout? 3. She Eats Lots of Veggies

MadisonLewis1Madison Lewis/Instagram

Madison eats a very healthy diet, sharing her meals on social media. One way she makes sure to get her veggies is by meal prepping. She divides up plastic containers, adding carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and celery, adding a little ranch dressing in the center. "A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check. Eating non-starchy vegetables and fruits like apples, pears, and green leafy vegetables may even promote weight loss. Their low glycemic loads prevent blood sugar spikes that can increase hunger," says Harvard Health.

4. She Allows Herself to Cheat

While she eats healthy most of the time, she indulge in lots of treats. Cookies, Oreos, hamburgers, banana pancakes, and tacos are a few of the guilty pleasures she has shared in her Instagram Stories. For a taco, "Choose any white fish you prefer, such as cod, tilapia, or haddock. Season the filets with a mix of spices (chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and black pepper, for example). Then either grill, bake, or pan-fry the fish in a nonstick pan with a little olive oil. For a vegetarian alternative, sauté a small amount of onion, then add the same spices to taste, sauté for a minute, then add a can of black beans. Simmer until the mixture thickens up a bit," says Harvard Health.

5. She Does Strength Training

Madison is one of the many stars who train at the celeb mecca gym The Dogpound. Madison Lewis is an actress, who also has a poetry book coming out soon. She is currently dating actor, Hayden Yezak. The two recently enjoyed a vacation together. Lewis shared some highlights on Instagram recently. In one post, the couple enjoyed a pool day together. Lewis captioned the post, “Paradise with my paradise.” How does she stay so fit? Read on to see 5 ways Madison Lewis stays in shape and the photos that prove they work.

1. She Goes To The Beach

As you can see from her recent post, Lewis spends a lot of time at the beach. This has a lot of health benefits. The South African College of Applied Physiology states, “Clinical Psychologist, Richard Shuster, reports that staring at the ocean changes our brain waves’ frequency. And puts us into a mild meditative state. Ergo, the relaxing effect on the senses when we watch the swell’s ebb and flow. A study by researchers from Harvard, the University of Massachusetts Medical Schools, and the German Bender Institute of Neuroimaging, showed that regular meditation significantly changes the brain. Specifically, it changes the grey matter concentration in the brain regions associated with learning and memory processes, emotion regulation, and perspective-taking. Furthermore, according to psychologists, listening to the waves activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This slows us down, allowing us to relax and feel more engaged.”

2. She Skis

Lewis likes to ski to stay in shape. At the beginning of the year, she took a ski trip, and shared these photos on Instagram. A study in Front Physiol states, “Downhill skiing, especially when performed on a regular basis, may contribute to healthy aging by its association with a healthier life style including higher levels of physical activity. Several other mechanisms suggest further favorable health effects of downhill skiing in response to specific challenges and adaptations in the musculo-skeletal and postural control systems, to exposures to cold temperatures and intermittent hypoxia, and/or emotional and social benefits from outdoor recreation.”

3. She Spends Time With Dogs

Lewis loves dogs. She and her boyfriend have a golden retriever together. Lewis shared these photos of herself and her dog outside on Instagram. The Animal Health Foundation states that having a dog has a lot of health benefits. “It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that owning a dog requires a little bit of energy. Dogs have to be walked and exercised, which means dog owners are out there getting more physical activity than people without dogs. Older people are more likely to take regular walks with a dog than they are with a human, according to one study. Another found that 60% of dog owners who took their dogs for regular walks were considered to get regular moderate or vigorous exercise based on federal standards.”

4. She Works Out With Others

Lewis makes sure to hit the gym. And she usually doesn’t go alone. A lot of Lewis’ gym posts are with her boyfriend or a friend. The CDC states that working out with others has a lot of benefits. “When you work out with a partner, you’re likely to: Feel more motivated. When you and your buddy encourage each other, you’ll work harder (and get better results!). And there’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. Be more adventurous. It’s easier to try new things with a buddy. You may just find an activity you love, one that feels more like fun and less like a workout. Be more consistent. When someone else is counting on you to show up, you won’t want to let them down.”

1. She Shows Self Control

A big one is that she shows restraint. When she spends time at home with her son, they love to bake. When the treats come out, smelling incredible, not many people could resist, but she does. "I’m just kind of helping cook and taking a bit," Madison told Bravo Insider. When it comes to maintaining balance and moderation in her daily diet, she explained, "I try to stay pretty healthy."

2. She’ll Cleanse When Necessary

Madison will do occasional cleanses where she eliminates or cuts back on foods like carbs and sugar, in addition to alcohol. She admits that she "started off [self] quarantine not healthy.” "I just started to feel really bad. I just said, 'This has got to stop, so I’m gonna make these foods and I’m gonna eat this kale salad and eat grilled chicken and broccoli four days a week, or whatever it was, and no alcohol for 14 days.'" She admits that it was very tough, but worth it.

3. She’s Mindful With Workouts and Her Diet

Just like being mindful with what she eats, this plays into her fitness as well. "I work out with a guy named Gunnar, who has been a friend of mine for so long,” she says. “Him and his girlfriend are great. They help me with meal plans and stuff like that just to keep me on track because they know that I’ve worked hard," she explained. "I would say he’s more of an accountability coach, which I appreciate 'cause sometimes I can get into the work mode and mom mode and put the health on the back burner."

4. She Considers It A Lifestyle

As she often shares on her social media, she considers health and wellness a lifestyle. "I try to work out at least four days a week, sometimes it’s three days,” she says. “It’s all generally mental health for me, I crave it. I definitely feel that it makes me a little bit less on edge," she said. She works out of the Charleston gym called HYLO and makes time for classes to feed her competitive edge. "I love working out with other people, all ages, all sizes, because when the girl beside me is giving me a run for my money, you know I’m running fast," she said. "I’m like, 'OK, girl. Let’s go.'" According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise is crucial for helping with anxiety and depression symptoms.

5. She Loves Celery Juice

Celery,Juice,,Healthy,Eating,ConceptShutterstock

Like so many things, when you’re building these habits consistency is key. "I always try to do some kind of juice in the morning. I do celery juice for skin purposes. I don’t have the best skin so I try doing that," she explained. "I’m pretty mindful about whatever I eat."

Water Skiing

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
