Jump Rope
Mariazel enjoys jumping rope as part of her workout routine. "You can jump rope at a slow, steady pace if you want to use it as low-impact, steady-state cardio or you can increase the intensity with techniques like high knees or double-unders (when the rope passes under the feet twice per jump) if you want to use it for HIIT-style training," says ISSA-certified personal trainer Mike Matthews. "Plus, if you're pushed for time and looking for an effective full-body workout, jumping rope is an excellent solution."
Carb Lover
No low-carb diets for Mariazel—she loves carbohydrate-rich foods such as sandwiches and pizza. "Just about everything can be enjoyed as part of a healthy lifestyle in moderation," says Caroline Cederquist, MD. "Be mindful and present while eating, and give the experience your full attention. And, truly ask yourself if you're still hungry before grabbing another slice."
Smoothies
Mariazel makes her own smoothies at home. "Many shop-bought smoothies are made from cheaper, more processed ingredients such as fruit purées and juices," says registered nutritionist Kerry Torrens. "These purées concentrate sugars whilst removing many of the nutritional benefits of the whole fruit such as the fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Some shop-bought smoothies are also sold in sizes larger than the recommended 150ml portion size and have added nutrients such as B vitamins as well as vitamins C and E.
Homemade smoothies, on the other hand, contain all of the fiber and will be naturally vitamin-rich because they're freshly made and ideally consumed straight away."
Weighted Lunges
Mariazel does weighted lunges when she hits the gym. "No excuses!" she captioned an Instagram reel. "Weighted Lunges: These are great for the lower back. You directly work the thigh muscles, hip muscles and buttocks, you strengthen the bones, ligaments and tendons of the legs and hips."
Date Night
Mariazel never skips date night with her husband, which experts say is important for maintaining a healthy relationship. "When the air masks come down, you are instructed to do yours first and then the child's," says licensed marriage and family therapist Carol Agnew. "If you don't make time for yourself and your relationship, it's going to be very bad. If you ignore the relationship that brought you the kids, you won't have a family anymore."
