McCutcheon lost a lot of weight, which left many wondering what her secrets were. She says that she had to try a lot of new things in order to find out what her best option was. "I think it takes a long time to work out what your own recipe is," she told Love Sunday magazine. "It's taken me such a long time to look through all the stuff that’s out there, and just do what works for me.”

2. She Uses The 80/20 Rule

When it comes to her diet, McCutcheon says to Love Sunday that she believes in balance. "The 80/20 rule is what works for me," she explained. "For 80 per cent of my week, I will have mainly just healthy proteins, vegetables and fruit, organic and veggie juices, and Flora ProActiv spread. And then I'll have treats 20 per cent of the time – I'll have that slice of pizza, chocolate or a G&T to celebrate a friend's birthday. I'll do it because I know that for most of the week, I've been doing the good bits for my heart."

3. She Uses The Cambridge Weight Plan

McCutcheon revealed to Hello! Magazine that she likes to use the Cambridge Weight Plan to lose weight, and that it came in handy after she had her first child. She says that it works because it helps keep her on track and is quick. “I’d tried the Cambridge Weight Plan before and had great results. I needed something that would work swiftly because I think you can lose the will if you’re not seeing results quickly enough. But it’s rigid enough for me not to stray.”

4. She’s More Confident

McCutcheon tells Hello! Magazine that her weight loss has made her develop more confidence in herself. “In the industry I’ve grown up in, you’re so scrutinised, it’s what you do – you put on your face and go out there, even if inside you don’t feel at all good about yourself. Now, that confidence feels more genuine. I set myself a goal and I’ve achieved it and, while a stone might not sound like a lot to some people, on my frame it has made a huge difference, not just to how I look but how I feel about myself.”

Derry Girls star Claire Rafferty had some fun in the sun earlier this year and shared the pictures with her fans and followers. Rafferty, who played Miss Mooney on the hit Netflix show, posted a picture of herself posing for a selfie in a brightly-colored swimsuit, looking fresh-faced and happy. “Do Not Disturb,” she captioned the post. “Babe alert!” commented a fan. 1. Anna on Shetland

Rafferty credits her native Irish accent with landing her the breakthrough role of Anna on TV show Shetland. “They were looking for anyone foreign to the islands as per Anna's character in the original book and were really taken with my Irish brogue,” she says. I went home that month to Belfast for my 30th birthday and had a big do in the house when I received a text from the casting director to say I got offered the part. What a birthday present! My whole family were there when I got the text so it was really special. It’s great for them to be able to share in it all. They have supported me for so long in pursuing acting – from my granny to my wee brother of 12.”

2. The Great Outdoors

Rafferty likes to exercise outdoors whenever she can, and her social media is full of pictures of her hiking. “Light tends to elevate people's mood, and unless you live in a glass house or are using a light box to treat seasonal affective disorder, there's usually more light available outside than in,” say the experts at Harvard Health. “Physical activity has been shown to relax and cheer people up, so if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, it might also mean more smiles and laughter.”

3. Filming On Location

Rafferty loves being outdoors, and was thrilled to film on location for Shetland. “The indoor shots were all in Glasgow and then all the other shots were on the stunning Shetland Islands,” she says. “The set was always a happy place when you had a backdrop like that. I did have to pinch myself a bit when I looked around at the caliber of actors working with me as well as the director Peter Hoar. Dougie Henshall was great to have as a partner in those difficult police cell scenes and I learned a lot from his whole attitude to acting. He's also a gentleman. All the cast and crew had a scream holed up in the barren landscape with very accommodating country pubs including ceilidh nights organized by the locals. It has a very Irish feel in more ways than one.”

4. Marathon Runner

Rafferty loves to run, and has taken part in at least five marathons. “We’ve found that going for something like a two-mile run a few times a week gets you pretty much the full benefit of running in terms of lower mortality,” says Dr. James H. O’Keefe, director of preventive cardiology at St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo. “The growing consensus in the field is that the benefits of running start to accrue within minutes,” says Dr. Rajesh Vedanthan, associate professor of population health at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. “The key message here is that any physical activity is much better than none.”

5. Lots of Swimming

Rafferty enjoys a dip in the pool, both for exercise and for fun. "Swimming is a wonderful sport. I definitely recommend swimming for people of all ages," says Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert Dr. Matthew Crowe. "Swimming is easy on the joints, and it's very good for both cardiac health and your core strength. And it also can give you really excellent strength around the shoulders, and hips and knees.”

Booth knew she wanted to act from an early age. “I always sort of loved performing for my family when I was really little,” she says. “When I was twelve, I auditioned for Huron Country Playhouse, which is a summer stock theater in Grand Bend, Ontario, and I was cast as an orphan in the musical Annie. It was that summer when I was walking into the first rehearsal and saw the adults there, and I don’t know why I’d never put two and two together before while watching TV, but it was like a light bulb went off for me, and I was like, 'Wait a second. You can actually do this for a living?' And that was it. And I was like, 'That’s what I wanna do.'”

2. Her Perfect Saturday

Booth loves to just relax on the weekends. “My perfect Saturday would mean slightly sleeping in—to like, 10 a.m. I’d get up and have an almond milk latte that I make here with my little Nespresso machine that I love,” she says. “Then my husband and I would get the dogs all leashed up and go for a walk. We’d come back and probably go out for brunch to Bonjour Brioche—it’s on Queen Street East. My husband and I both love pancakes so we’d probably end up having them with fresh squeezed orange juice or something like that. Maybe a side of bacon, too—gotta have some protein!”

3. Horror Movie Fan

Booth is a big movie buff, enjoying both rom coms and scary flicks. “I have my favorites that I watch: The Princess Bride and Bridget Jones’s Diary,” she says. “Those are two of my go to feel-good movies. My best friend and I have a bit of a weird obsession with horror films, so generally when I’m at home she’ll come over and all three of us will sit around and watch really bad horror movies, like the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s so bad. It’s awful. But then there are some really great ones. We just watched the original—I think it’s Swedish—of Let the Right One In. I like to be scared—to sit for two or three hours on the sofa with my stomach in knots.”

4. Playing Ethel Kennedy

Booth once played Ethel Kennedy on The Kennedys and took it seriously. “Well, you know, the first time around, it kind of haunted me a little bit–I’m not gonna lie,” she says. “And even almost more so the second time. You’re portraying someone who lived this life, who is a part of history, who is still alive, and you obviously want to do them justice and portray them as close to who they are or who they were at that time as possible. I pored over biographies and books about the Kennedys, videos and all sorts of research material in order to create this character who then became Ethel Kennedy.”

5. Bubble Baths

Booth sometimes enjoys a bath as part of a relaxing Saturday. “Sometimes I’ll take a bath before bed—I do enjoy a good bubble bath,” she says. “I like lavender essential oil in it to help me sleep. But usually it’s just us crawling into bed and passing out. I’m sort of religious about washing my face before I go to sleep. But I will admit that on more than one occasion on a Saturday, I will skip that. That’s why I have towelettes on my nightstand!”

I’ve got the hobbies of a grandmother; I bake cookies, I crochet. The smartest person I know does crossword puzzles and I thought, 'Oh, that’s how she knows so many words,' so I thought I should start doing them too. I started with Mondays, and so now I do them every Monday—my time is getting shorter every week, I’m getting much better.”

2. Christmas In Connecticut

Gallagher loves to spend down time in the country, relaxing and recharging. “I try to get up to my family’s house in Connecticut as much as I can,” she says. “It’s so beautiful and I’ve been coming since I was two years old. I come up on a Sunday night, I wake up Monday and build a fire, make some coffee, and sit and read. It’s a dream. I’m a big fan of Sakara. I try to be vegan, and it’s all plant-based so I love it. But I also definitely indulge. Over Christmas I made cookies for the cast and I did a classic gingerbread house.”

Gallagher looks for humor and honesty when collaborating with other musicians. “Honesty’s a big one,” she says. “I start any co-write with just talking. Openness and all the things I look for in a friend. And also talent is always lovely [laughs], but it really is almost further down on the list. You have to like them as a person, especially because co-songwriting can be such an awkward thing…you have to be honest and open, and that’s not an easy thing to do at all.”

4. Bagels and Nostalgia

Gallagher spends her day off practicing, and enjoying her favorite foods. “I pick up my guitar every day and write, but Monday is a good day for me to focus on the business side of my music; figuring out what song I’ll put out next or getting together the artwork for a release,” she says. “H&H Bagels is 100 percent my place. I’m a bagel aficionado, and pretty much every day off starts there. When I’m really stressed out, I walk through the Natural History Museum. I find it really relaxing there, maybe because I grew up nearby and went a lot as a kid. Nostalgia is my favorite way to deal with stress.”

5. Jagged Little Pill

Gallagher played Bella Fox on the Broadway show Jagged Little Pill, and says the experience was incredibly timely. “When I got the role, it was before the #MeToo movement began,” she says. “It was before people talked about it. Honestly, seeing how our script came to life in the news every single day was miraculous. We were actually in rehearsals during the lab when #MeToo broke, when the Weinstein stuff came out, everything. All of that happened while we were in the rehearsal room. Every day we came into work and there was a new headline about these incredible women coming forward and sharing their stories. There was no way that wasn’t going to inform both my performance and also the way the script grew and evolved.”

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

She Walks and Hikes

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:
