She Does "Slow, Controlled" Workouts
Melissa isn't a fan of HIIT workouts. "I believe that we do not have to torture ourselves with hour-plus long workouts that we despise to see lasting results internally and externally. My philosophy is that when you move in a slow, controlled way, mostly using your own body weight—all while connecting very deeply to your breath—you not only see such a transformational difference through your entire body but most importantly, your mind," she told Vogue.
She Is Consistent
According to Melissa, consistency is key when it comes to getting in shape. "The glue that holds it all together is the consistency of this practice. Continually coming back to it day in and day out, no matter if it's five minutes or ten, is what I think makes the biggest impact in your habit of showing up for yourself," she told Vogue.
Her Workout Method Is a Combination of Pilates and Yoga
"My method was born at a time I realised I no longer had hours to spend in the gym but needed something that still made an impact. After blending two forms of movement I loved the most (Pilates and yoga) and truly listening to myself for the first time, I saw an incredible difference not only in my body but in my mind. In my eyes, this is not about discipline, it's about coming back to the consistency of showing up for yourself daily to achieve lasting results," she explained to Vogue about why her method works.
She Practices Healthy Habits in the Morning
Melissa starts her day without making contact with her phone for 30 minutes. She also drinks warm water with lemon followed by an oat milk latte. After dropping her kids off at school she will meditate and then do her "movement practice."
She Follows a Plant-Based Diet
While Melissa encourages a plant-focused diet she does suggest listening to your body and what it's asking of you. "Every individual is different and thrives on incorporating different foods into their regimen. Removing labels for me has been a big thing this year and intuitively focusing on the foods that make me feel best is what I keep coming back to," she told Vogue.
She Drinks This Smoothie
Melissa has one secret smoothie ingredient. "Spirulina is a great plant-based protein option that gives you a real boost," she told Vogue, sharing her smoothie recipe, which she makes in a blender.
- "1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup coconut water
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries and blueberries)
- 1/2 pitted date (to cut the taste of the spirulina)
- 1/2 peeled cucumber (the peel tastes bitter when blended in a smoothie)
- 1/2 cup spinach
- 1/4 cup romaine (optional)
- 1/2 squeeze lemon
- 1 tbsp organic spirulina powder"
