1. Resistance Bands

Salas uses resistance bands to give her exercises an edge. "Studies show that there are no benefit changes between machines, free weights, and resistance bands," says Hayden Steele, NSCA-C.P.T., C.S.C.S. "Optimally, they would all be used together [in a training regimen], but when you look at strength benefits, you can't say that dumbbells are more effective than resistance bands. They just offer the same benefits for less money."
2. Boxing Workouts

Salas loves boxing workouts. "You're swinging your arms, moving the muscles of your arms and shoulders, increasing your upper-body strength," says physical therapist Linda Arslanian. "And when you're in the boxer crouch with a wide stance, with your knees slightly bent, you're strengthening your core muscles, back, and legs.”
3. Elliptical Machine

Salas uses the elliptical machine for warm ups and cool downs. “Joint protection is why many healthcare providers recommend ellipticals over treadmills when reintroducing exercise, especially after injury or surgery,” says exercise physiologist Katie Lawton, MEd. “No matter your cardio machine of choice, cross-training can help with the boredom that can come from consistently using one machine.”
4. Resistance Training

Salas makes resistance training the core part of her workouts. “Numerous studies have shown that strength training can play a role in slowing bone loss, and several show it can even build bone. This is tremendously useful to help offset age-related declines in bone mass,” says Harvard Health. “Activities that put stress on bones can nudge bone-forming cells into action. That stress comes from the tugging and pushing on bone that occur during strength training (as well as weight-bearing aerobic exercises like walking or running). The result is stronger, denser bones.”
5. Shellfish Lover
Salas loves fresh shellfish, especially shrimp and lobster. “Shellfish – especially crustaceans – are high in amino acids, known as the ‘building blocks’ of protein as we need them for growth and repair and the synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters,” says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. “Certain shellfish are high in carotenoids, including beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A when consumed. Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants – vitamin A in particular is needed for healthy immunity.”
