Coffee First Thing
Ramos starts the day with coffee—namely a shot of espresso mixed with plenty of hot water. "Both regular and decaf coffee seem to have a protective effect on your liver," says Johns Hopkins Medicine. "Research shows that coffee drinkers are more likely to have liver enzyme levels within a healthy range than people who don't drink coffee."
Mediterranean Salad
Ramos loves making salads at home, especially what she calls an "Israeli salad" consisting of olive oil, lemon, cucumber, tomatoes, and tahini. Olive oil in particular is known to be heart-healthy. "The health benefits of olive oil have been attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties," says Howard E. LeWine, MD. "In fact, observational studies have shown a link between lower risks of cardiovascular disease, some cancers, and even dementia in people who consume higher amounts of olive oil than those who use little or none."
Eggs On Toast
Ramos enjoys making cheesy eggs on toast, which is a delicious—and healthy—meal. "Pack on the muscles with eggs," says the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "The high levels of protein in eggs help strengthen and build muscles, preventing muscle loss later in life. Eggs are a great source of high-quality protein, healthy fats, and important nutrients."
Hiking
Ramos loves working up a good sweat while exploring new places. "Research is quite clear on the benefits of being in nature while exercising," says Jill Suttie, PsyD. "Studies have found that, compared to walking in a cityscape or along a road, walking in green spaces helps us recover from 'attention overload'—the mental fatigue that comes from living and working in a world where computers and cell phones are a constant distraction."
Chocolate For Dessert
Ramos waits till after dinner for her sweet indulgence—some sort of chocolate-based dessert. "People who ate dark chocolate reported that they felt less stressed, and researchers confirmed that after eating dark chocolate, there were reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol," says Johns Hopkins Health. "This may be related to dark chocolate's effects on heart health, since stress is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease."
