She Values Veggies
"As long as I'm not having a crazy cheat day, the first thing I'll put in my body is vegetables," Rhian says. Good call. "For example, one particular group of vegetables known as cruciferous"—which includes broccoli and kale—"contains a potent phytochemical called sulforaphane. Research surrounding this phytochemical has shown it to be a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, which aids in the prevention and treatment of several types of cancer. In addition, some studies show a correlation between consuming vegetables high in this phytochemical with a reduction in depression, improved pain management, reduction in obesity and improved conditions related to cardiovascular disease," says the Mayo Clinic.
She Has Intermittent Fasted
Ramos has intermittent fasted in the past. "Intermittent fasting is just when you restrict your eating for a period of time. It can be done in many ways. Fasting can be done by the amount of hours you're not eating in a day, if it's by days in the week or it could also entail a caloric fast," Julia Zumpano, RD, explained to the Cleveland Clinic. "Generally, fasting means that you should not be eating any solid food and also not consuming any beverages that have calories. Coffee is an exception and so is tea. They technically have five calories or less per serving, but no drink that actually has carbohydrate-based calories. You can drink water, black coffee and unsweetened tea. In some cases you can have a small amount of cream in your coffee, as long as it does not provide a substantial amount of calories or carbohydrates."
She Does Full-Body Workouts
Ramos has shared how she's worked out during quarantine, and it was a bodyweight workout—no equipment necessary. "The nature of body-weight workouts forces you to focus and get down to business," says the Mayo Clinic. "In fact, if you add plyometric moves — such as lateral jumps, squat jumps or even skipping — to your routine, you can maximize calorie burn in 20 minutes or less. For example, perform a body-weight exercise, such as pushups, and then switch to another exercise, such as single-leg squats or tricep dips. In between these two exercises, get your heart rate up with a set of jumping jacks or burpees. The duration of each exercise depends on your fitness level."
Her Take on Beauty Changes as She Gets Older
"I think every decade, you care a little less," she has joked about aging. "I think what's important now is when I look in the mirror, I like what I see." She starts her day with a candle and a shower. "I like getting a fresh start, every single morning."
She Did Lose Some Weight Due to Stress
"I tried so many different diets in my life," Ramos has said. "I used to be kind of a pudgy kid and at a certain point I lost weight in a very unhealthy way, mind you. I dropped weight super fast and was left with a lot of loose skin. It was just kind of scarring being made fun of because kids are mean …but it has become very useful to me to know what to eat. I do eat purposefully depending on what I want to achieve, like what the end result is, that I'm going to be doing that day." Ramos got some flack online about losing "too much" weight. She responded: "I was in so much pain and so much stress. I couldn't get out of my bed, I wasn't eating right. I couldn't eat. Nothing tasted like anything…. I was under so much stress that my body basically started eating itself," she said. So: "Yes, I've seen a mirror. Yes, I've lost a lot of weight, and to those of you who share your concern, yes, I appreciate it, I am gonna be okay in my own time. It's just important that I process these things for myself now, so I don't take them with me in the future," she said.
