Hyland revealed some of her favorite wellness routines and products to Byrdie. She says that when it comes to skincare, she focuses on gaining collagen. “I’m focusing more on my collagen production because as soon as you turn 20, you lose 1 percent of the collagen your body makes per year,” she explains. “So I'm 10 percent lower than I was when I was 20 which is why I love the Collagen Peptides24 moisturizer. The Modern Family star has struggled with kidney dysplasia and endometriosis impacting her life. One certain health issues are simply out of her control, she focuses on what she can control. "It really is this balance of mental, emotional and physical reality," said Hyland. "So if you're feeling mentally and emotionally drained, or if you are in a very dark space, you have to pull the string on the other side to lift you up out of that." According to the NIDDK, “Kidney dysplasia is a condition in which the internal structures of one or both of a fetus' kidneys do not develop normally while in the womb.”

2. She Works Out At Her Own Pace

For Sarah, working out helps a lot, but certain health hurdles can get in the way at times. Due to her health concerns, she’s ended up in the hospital a few times with various issues and it’s hard to have a consistent workout schedule. She focuses on what she can do and doesn’t beat herself up if she has to stray off schedule.

Sarah doesn't have time for trolls online waiting to comment on her body. When she started receiving comments like "eat some bread," Sarah shut that down fast via Instagram. "I've been reading some of your DMs and so many of you are like, 'Girl, you fine, but like, eat some bread!'" Sarah said. "I would like to put in a request for anyone who is concerned about my bread consumption to send it to Wells Adams, because he is the sole person who knows about how much bread I consume on a daily basis. Thanks! Love you, mean it. 'K, bye," Hyland finished.

4. She Controls What She Can

"I never really paid attention to skincare at all," she says. "I didn't think that it was necessary because it wasn't at that time. But as I got older, you start to be like, 'Oh, I should probably be taking care of myself more and eating more greens than fast food and using moisturizers instead of not and really investing in myself.' Rather than other trivial things." Sarah started to put a lot of emphasis on her skin care, including what she eats to take care of the outside of her body when she can’t always control what’s happening inside."It’s been a big transformation for me, not only health wise but emotionally, physically and mentally," Sarah says. "If you don’t have control in some areas of your life, you need to be able to take control of the other ones that you can do."

"To be able to take control of my body and use a product that makes me feel comfortable because I'm not able to do what normally makes me feel comfortable has been really amazing,” she says. Because I know that my face is swollen from my medication that is saving my life,” she says. “My self confidence is not rendered from your comments. Because I will always be too fat. Sarah suffers from a chronic kidney issue, often landing her in the hospital. She first underwent a kidney transplant in April 2012, revealing to Seventeen that she suffers from kidney dysplasia, a condition in which kidneys don’t develop properly in the womb and result in painful cysts. In 2017 she underwent her second kidney transplant after the first failed and she was forced to undergo dialysis. She also suffers from endometriosis and an abdominal hernia. “I was still in severe pain after the transplant, and that was due to the endo and the hernia,” she told Self in 2018. By the end 0f 2018, she had undergone a whopping 16 surgeries over the course of her life. Sarah has been very open about how her health struggles have impacted both her physical and mental health.

Sarah is one of the many stars and supermodels who train at the Los Angeles and New York gym The Dogpound, where she works out with ​​Austin Pohlen. “Prep for a secret shoot next week! …but let’s be real. Sarah rarely skips a workout when she is in good health. "I like to build muscle by strength training with my trainer,” Sarah told Shape in 2017. “I do an hour-long full-body workout five to six days a week whenever I can. We focus on different body parts, and in between each one, I do one or two minutes of cardio. It's pretty intense."
