She Treats Her Bipolar Disorder
Selena has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder."I'm going to be very open with everybody about this: I've been to four treatment centers," Gomez revealed to Rolling Stone in 2022. "I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad." Her highs and lows would last weeks or months at a time, prompted by nothing she could put her finger on. Sometimes, she wouldn't be able to sleep for days. She would experience periods of mania followed by lows. "It would start with depression, then it would go into isolation. Then it just was me not being able to move from my bed. I didn't want anyone to talk to me. My friends would bring me food because they love me, but none of us knew what it was. Sometimes it was weeks I'd be in bed, to where even walking downstairs would get me out of breath." She even spent a few years contemplating suicide. "I thought the world would be better if I wasn't there," she said.
She Maintains a Nourishing Diet
While Selena stays away from strict diets, she nourishes her body with food. Her wellness expert Amy Rosoff Davis told Byrdie that she stocks her dressing room with veggies and protein and brown rice or whole grains. "I made a lot of rice bowls with veggies, protein, and avocado for Selena. It helped give her energy and stamina, which she needed to get through her shows. I also made healthy chicken salad with grapes and celery—it quenched her thirst and the protein filled her up," she added.
She Hydrates
Selena also prioritizes hydration. "We always drank lots of water and had green tea when we needed a pick me up—it sure was exhausting at times," Davis said. According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine men should drink about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day and women about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids.
She Does Interval Training
Selena and Davis focus on "interval and circuit training—and building a strong core," Davis told Byrdie. "My whole thing is toning mixed with cardio and stretching," she added. In a recent TikTok Gomez gives fans a glimpse of her grueling workout, doing moves like overhead arm raises, weighted squats, weighted leg lifts, donkey kicks, stretches, and crunches with a medicine ball.
She Also Does Pilates, Hikes, Dances, Yoga, and Cycles
Selena also stays active via a variety of other methods. "[Selena and I] do everything from Pilates to hiking to dance cardio to circuit training to yoga and Spinning—the list goes on," Davis told Byrdie.
She Indulges
Selena loves fast food. "So I be trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack in the Box and I got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings, and a spicy chicken sandwich," she once said in a social media video captured by the Instagram account @selenagomezecu2.0. "But honestly, I don't care about my weight because people bitch about it anyway," she continued, adding that she's heard people say "you're too big," or that her clothes don't fit. "Meh, meh, meh, meh," she continued. "B**ch, I am perfect the way I am. Moral of the story? Bye."
