She Has Starved Herself for Roles
For her role in Adrift, Shailene starved herself for weeks. "For the last two weeks I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day – 350 calories," she told The Times. "It was f**king miserable." She added that the lack of food also messed with her sleeping habits. "I can't sleep when I'm hungry so I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f**k out," she added.
She Brings Her Own Food to Set
"I bring my own food in the morning and at night," Shailene confessed to Bon Appétit. "I go to work, then I come home and learn my lines, and then I'll make dinner and use whatever I make for dinner as leftovers the next day. It usually has potatoes or sweet potatoes, a protein, and a vegetable. It's an easy, quick thing to do every day, and then you can switch up the sauces depending on what you're feeling like." What is her go-to dish? "A homemade roast or a homemade casserole or meat stew with homemade bone broth. It's my ultimate comfort, cozy kind of food," she said.
She Loves Fermented Food
Shailene loves fermented food. "My favorites are kraut, kimchi, and kombucha, but you can ferment just about anything. I sort of love that semi-rotten flavor," she told Bon Appetit. "Yeah, I make sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha if I'm in a stable environment long enough to do it."
She Eats Clay
Shailene also eats clay. "(Clay) is one of the best things you can put in your body," she told Into the Gloss. "One of my friends was making a clay toothpaste that you swallow instead of spit out. But I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that, where he's from, the women eat clay when they're pregnant. Seriously — ask your taxi drivers where they are from and about their customs. You will learn a lot," she added. "So, I've discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn't absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body."
She Fixes Ailments with Food
"If I wasn't an actress, I'd probably do something with food. Finding seeds, planting seeds, watching them grow, harvesting the fruits, cooking the fruits, eating them, seeing how my body reacts, and even digesting. I'm fascinated with the entire process," she told Into the Gloss. "I would open a place like Moon Juice and have an elixir bar where people could come in and say, 'My tooth aches,' or, 'I have a sinus infection,' and I would be able to help them. I've been an avid environmentalist since high school, and through that, I learned about agriculture, and about how corrupt the food system is in America. It's disgusting. I thought, 'Well, if this is unhealthy, and that is unhealthy, and if organics are depleting the soil just as much as GMO crops are, what can I do?' I started studying the lifestyles of indigenous cultures, and through that, herbalism."
She Drinks Bulletproof Coffee
Shailene told Bon Appetit that she loves Bulletproof Coffee. "It's my morning ritual," she explained. "I put a little bit of coconut oil in there, too. It's coffee, coconut oil, and butter. I'll put some cinnamon or cayenne in there sometimes. I put it all in a blender because I want it to be latte-y. You've got to try it. People love it for a reason."
Her Cheat Food? Sweet Potato Fries
When asked by Bon Appetite if she cheats on pizza and fries, she answered. "Absolutely. For a long time I never did, but now I'm like, 'Dude, you're human.' For me, one of my downfalls is sweet potato fries. I won't eat them if they're fried in canola oil just because of the genetic modification aspect of it, but if they're made in any other way I will have my sweet potato fries."
She Goes Hard with Workouts
To get into shape for her role in Divergent, she went all out. Garrett Warren, the film's stunt coordinator, told Glamour that she "sometimes had to be motivated to do cardio—she's not a fan of doing a repetitive activity in one spot for too long," but her workouts were pretty hardcore. She would do 90 minutes of stretching and cardio (biking or jumping rope), followed by push-ups, chin-ups, tricep dips, and abs work. After that, she would add a session of fight training or gun training, and 15 minutes of knife training. "She would sleep in on weekends but still train," he said. "Her treat would be a massage."
