1. Inspiring Moms
Cruz says she wants to inspire other mothers to still take care of themselves and prioritize their health after having children. "I just want to inspire, of course, moms,” she said. “And that we can still be very healthy, and we have to be very healthy especially for the children so that we can take care of them."
2. Kayaking
Cruz loves water sports such as kayaking. “For people who just run and cycle, they tend to not have a lot of muscle mass in the upper body,” says Dr. François Billaut, an exercise physiology professor at Laval University in Quebec and the former head physiologist for the Canadian national kayaking team. “Kayaking offers a balance.”
3. Enjoying Her Workouts
Cruz stays active as much as she can. "I exercise three to four times a week, even if it's less than an hour,” she says. “I do spinning, boxing or Zumba because those are the workouts I enjoy the most. I think it's really important that we also enjoy the workouts we do."
4. Treadmill Workouts
Cruz hits the treadmill when she’s at the gym. “There are many benefits to adding treadmill training into your exercise routine and the convenience of the machine makes it a useful tool in commercial and home gyms,” says registered physiotherapist Sam Preston. “It’s important to vary the style of your training, as there are different adaptations and responses to each stimulus you apply to the body.”
5. Healthy Diet
Cruz follows a healthy diet that allows for treats. "I eat mostly protein and less carbs but every weekend, those are my cheat days,” she says. “So I eat what I've been craving for on weekends. It's really necessary to be focused and have priorities, and, at the same time, I owe it to myself, to be healthy. Not just to look good but to be healthy to take care of my kids as a single mom."
