Tracee Ellis Ross started the last year of her forties off with a bang! The Blackish star, who turned 49 last week, stripped down into her swimsuit for a post-birthday snap on Monday. “SCORPIO SZN ~ thirstayyyyyy,” she captioned the image of her banging body. “LET THEM HAVE IT!” Gabrielle Union exclaimed in response to the smoking hot photo. “Yeesss,” added January Jones. How does the actress keep herself so fit? Read on to see 7 ways Tracee Ellis Ross stays in shape and the photos that prove they work—and to get beach-ready yourself, don't miss these essential 30 Best-Ever Celebrity Bathing Suit Photos!

1. Her Diet Is Healthy-ish

Ross maintains a (mostly!) healthy diet. “I like simple, whole foods,” she dished to People. In general she avoids dairy and tries to source seasonal produce from the organic farmers market.

2. She Does The Tracy Anderson Method

Ross sticks to workouts that make her “feel good,” she told Health. “I have to say that Tracy Anderson's workout the last five years has been really good for me. I love the studio atmosphere, I love how beautiful and sexy and long and strong I look when I work out, and I love the loud music,” she explained. “I find that, as adults, we stay so regimented in our movement, even if we get on a treadmill. The music changes all the patterns, and my body gets to move freely, so you feel amazing—which is ultimately the point of the workouts, too. One of the things that's most encouraging is you see a roomful of women working their asses off and looking beautiful. You see women in their 40s wearing jog bras and their stomachs out proudly, walking in a stance that says, ‘I love my body,’ and that's exciting to me.”

3. She Doesn’t Do Daily Workouts

73rd Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsRich Fury/Getty Images

Rosee works out “three days a week on a regular basis, sometimes four,” she revealed to Health. “Sometimes I take a little break, but the truth is, I feel the best when I work out. I feel very strong. I didn't wake up like this. At 22, I woke up like that. At 44, I work really hard for this! I am on TV, and I don't want to lie to anybody. I'm not at my skinniest, I'm not at my fattest, but I live my life. This is my body. Health and the functionality of my body are more important than what it looks like.”

4. Self-Care Is Key

Tom Ford AW20 Show - ArrivalsMike Coppola/FilmMagic

Ross prioritizes self-care. “I moisturize, and I dry brush, and I infrared sauna, and I do acupuncture, and I get facials,” she told Health about her regular practices.

5. She Hydrates and Stays Away From Booze

Ross’ beverage of choice is H2o. “I drink water, and I don't drink a ton of alcohol,” she revealed to Health. “Alcohol makes the folds go deeper—one glass of wine is like being on 17 airplanes; it just dries you out.”

6. She Gets Her Z’s

One of the “biggest things” Ross prioritizes is sleep. “Sometimes it's not eight hours, but my sleep is sacred to me,” she told Health. In fact, she revealed in a recent Instagram post that sometimes she makes sacrifices in order to get enough of it. "I’ve tried to choose sleep over working out, which I think is the right choice.”

7. She Has Cheat Days

51st NAACP Image Awards - ArrivalsSteve Granitz/WireImage

Ross alots herself cheat days. “I love going to one of my favorite restaurants once a week to have a glass of wine and a delicious meal. I don’t restrict my eating to firm meal times. I eat in the same philosophy that I live with: joyfully!” she told People.

Tracee Ellis Ross just shared a special swimsuit selfie. She spent the 4th of July weekend in a green bathing suit. The Black-ish star, who is behind Pattern, the product for curly, coily & tight-textured hair, looks fantastic for any age, much less at 49. How does she stay so fit? Read on to see 5 ways Tracee Ellis Ross stays in shape and the photos that prove they work—and to get beach-ready yourself, don't miss these essential 30 Best-Ever Celebrity Bathing Suit Photos!

1. She Gets Her Sleep

tracee-ellis-ross-weekend-selfieTracee Ellis Ross/Instagram

"I’ve tried to choose sleep over working out, which I think is the right choice," she said on Instagram. “Keep your room cool, dark and quiet. Exposure to light in the evenings might make it more challenging to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime. Consider using room-darkening shades, earplugs, a fan or other devices to create an environment that suits your needs,” says the Mayo Clinic. “Doing calming activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath or using relaxation techniques, might promote better sleep.”

2. She Stays Grateful

Tracee Ellis Ross Celebrates The UK Launch Of PATTERN Beauty By Showcasing Her Shampoo & Conditioner Routines Live In LondonDave Benett/Getty Images

"I’m so grateful to be living this life I’m in. I’ve worked so hard to feel good in my skin and to build a life that truly matches me and I’m in it and it feels good. I remain curious and teachable and so it will all keep getting better." “Gratitude everyday can bring happiness into your life, and that’s healthy. You can make an impact on your own life and the lives of others by practicing gratitude,” says the Mayo Clinic. Amit Sood, M.D., a Mayo Clinic stress management and resiliency expert tells the site that you can “cultivate deeper gratitude by being thankful for the simple and the ordinary. It will help you become happier and more resilient.”

3. She Works Out Three to Four Times a Week

“According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the ideal workout regimen balances cardiovascular work and strength training. Their guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity each week or vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for a minimum of 20 minutes three days a week. Additionally, you should do strength training twice a week,” says the Cleveland Clinic.

4. She Has Done Tracy Anderson's Workout

The UK Launch Dinner Of PATTERN Beauty, Hosted By Founder/CEO Tracee Ellis RossDave Benett/Getty Images

"I have to say that Tracy Anderson's workout the last five years has been really good for me," Tracee told Health. “People want a quick fix. They want magic to get them connected because they didn’t show up for themselves for so long. All of a sudden you feel uncomfortable and you feel disconnected and you desperately want to get reconnected, so you want a quick fix. You want it to be a juice cleanse, you want it to be a diet pill, you want it to be a fitness trend. And it’s not,” Anderson told The Cut.

5. Strength Training Really Works

94th Annual Academy Awards - Red CarpetEmma McIntyre/Getty Images

“You lose muscle mass as you get older,” says orthopaedic surgeon Anne Marie Chicorelli, DO to the Cleveland Clinic. “And it’s important to recognize that. People ask me all the time, ‘Well, I walk every day. Isn’t that enough?’ and I will respond, ‘That’s great for your cardiovascular health, but it doesn’t do as much for your strength.’ Strength training, weight training and jogging are impact activities that increase your bone health and decrease your risk for fractures. And make sure to talk to your primary care provider before initiating an exercise program.”

Tracee Ellis Ross is 49 and thriving. “I feel the sexiest I’ve ever felt. Even with all the working out, it’s just a little softer. My [backside is] bigger. My [chest is] bigger. A lot changes as I’ve gotten older!” she says. The actress posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing a red bikini, captioning the snap “FAUX LOCS in the vineyard.” How does she stay so fit? 1. She Swears By the Tracy Anderson Method

Ross is a longtime devotee of the Tracy Anderson Method. “A mash up of this morning’s @tracyandersononlinestudio live stream class,” she captioned one Instagram video. “I did my best, did a lot of giggling and talking to myself and made some variations as best I could on the moves I couldn’t do (being extra careful). As you all know I love me some @tracyandersonmethod. I love the workouts and have been doing it for years. It keeps me strong and long with a little jiggle. Just like I like! We are usually in a 98 degree studio. My makeshift home space is not nearly as hot but this is working and wonderful. I’m so grateful. Thank you Tracy for your spirit and care. I miss the beautiful energy of our studio space, the Tracy team and all the regular members. As usual, sending deep gratitude to all those working in essential industries and wishing everyone joy, love and health. Leggings by @carbon38.”

2. Eggs For Lunch

The UK Launch Dinner Of PATTERN Beauty, Hosted By Founder/CEO Tracee Ellis RossDave Benett/Getty Images

Lunch usually consists of “hard-boiled egg with quinoa (seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper) and sautéed zucchini mixed with crushed Brazil nuts.” Eggs are a great lunch choice, says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. “Whole eggs are nutritionally rich, supplying almost every nutrient you need,” Lewin says. “They are useful sources of some of the hard to get nutrients like vitamins D and B12 as well as the mineral iodine. Eggs are regarded as a ‘complete’ source of protein as they contain all nine essential amino acids, which we must obtain from our diet. Furthermore, if you choose brands enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, due to the diet the chickens are fed, you’ll benefit from higher omega-3 fatty acids as well as fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and E.”

3. Steak and Salad For Dinner

Well-done,Grilled,Marinated,Beef,Flank,Steak,On,Wooden,BoardShutterstock

A typical dinner for Ross is “broiled steak with olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano, and a side salad of arugula with apples, onions, olive oil and lemon.” “Red meat has been an important part of the human diet throughout human evolution,” reads an article published by Cambridge University Press. “When included as part of a healthy, varied diet, red meat provides a rich source of high biological value protein and essential nutrients, some of which are more bioavailable than in alternative food sources.”

4. The Early Bird Special

Tracee Ellis Ross in Partnership with Buy From A Black Woman and H&MStefanie Keenan/Getty Images

Ross prefers to eat an early dinner over a late one. “My favorite meal of the day is an early dinner/late lunch between 4 and 6 pm,” Ross says. “I love going to one of my favorite restaurants once a week to have a glass of wine and a delicious meal.” Eating dinner three hours before bedtime at the very latest is ideal, says registered dietitian, MS, and LDN Rachel Swanson. “This recommendation is part of a bigger, and much more sophisticated, biological picture. The benefit of an early dinner has to do with the fact that as the day winds down, the body needs less food for energy and should be entering a fasting state. Capping your intake more than two hours before bed allows for an extended overnight fasting window to take place—the essential downtime your body needs to facilitate detoxification and cellular repair.”

5. She Protects Her Mental Health

“I asked to see a therapist at 12 years old,” Ross told The Cut. “And I think it’s really important to know that therapists are professionals; they are bound by law. That does not mean you should talk to everybody, and that does not mean you should share things before you feel safe enough to share them, and that does not mean just because you’ve met with a therapist, they’re the right therapist for you. There is an evolution and a growth happening within our community that is lessening the stigma of getting help. It’s the same way you wouldn’t try and do your accounting by yourself.”

Tracee Ellis Ross will be the first to tell you she works incredibly hard for her incredibly toned, fit physique. Ross, 51, shared an Instagram story of herself wearing black leggings and a matching shirt, doing intense resistance training exercises at the gym. At one point she uses dumbbells for an arm workout. Ross is only getting stronger and fitter by the year—here’s what her wellness routine looks like, and what’s next for the black-ish star.

1. That Robe Life

Ross is happiest at home in a robe. “I was dating someone. He was English, and he was like, ‘My God, you're always in a housecoat.’ I was like, ‘First of all, it's not a housecoat.’ He was like, ‘Housedress.’ I'm like, ‘Not a housedress. It's called a robe.’ And I have a collection of robes. I have three of the d'Oro robes. I have satin robes, I have cotton robes, I have ripped-up, old robes, I have terrycloth robes. There's been a lot of robing.”

2. Staying Grounded

Ross tries her best to stay grounded as a public figure, and of course the daughter of Diana Ross. "Home for me is about safety and embrace,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s about shedding all the external masks that we have to wear out in the world. Home is really about beauty, safety, history. My friendships are home for me. My family is home for me. It’s an energetic connection that creates a sense of safety and groundedness, where I don’t have to wear any mask. I can just be myself."

3. She’s a Business Pro

Ross is rightfully proud of her curated haircare line Pattern. “I launched into being a founder and a CEO as a consumer who saw a big gap in the market,” she told ESSENCE. “And it took me ten years to get the company off the ground. By the time I found my partners, even though I am the majority owner of the company, by the time I found my partners, I already had gotten a retail partner. I’d already pitched and convinced Ulta that we were the brand they needed. So, this is my baby, as opposed to a company that I put my name on.”

4. Stay the Course

Typewriter,With,Special,Buttons,,Stay,The,CourseShutterstock

Ross has good advice for up and coming entrepreneurs. “Just stay the course,” she said at the Amazon Accelerate conference in Seattle.“Remember there’s information in the no’s. Let yourself take disappointment and the hit, but don’t take it personally. There are a lot of reasons people will give you that your idea is not a good one. But you only need one person to believe in you.”

5. Self-Care and Workouts

Tracee.Ellis.RossTracy Ellis Ross/Instagram

Ross works out not just for physical health but mental wellbeing, too. “I was not in the mood to workout today but I got in there and did it anyway. I always feel better after a workout. Didn't smile during but I'm smiling now,” she captioned an Instagram video.

I’ve been doing pilates, I’ve been doing yoga, I’ve done just plain old walking. I wear 10 pound weights on my ankles while I’m working just so that as I’m moving during the day I’m constantly building muscle. It’s not great for your back but I’m doing it anyway. I do a booty workout thing that I just did for Shape, which was really fun. And I do Zumba. I have DVDs and I dance around like a crazy person in my house.”

Over the past few years, Sydney Sweeney has become one of America’s sweethearts with celebrated roles in everything from hit HBO shows Euphoria and White Lotus to big-screen movies Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Anyone But You. In addition to her impressive acting ability, the star is a total bombshell and has one of the fittest figures in Hollywood. Here are the top 5 habits that help her stay fit at 27.

Water Skiing

Sydney Sweeney arrives to "The Road to the Golden Globes Party"

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Morning Workouts

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

One of the ways she treats her anxiety is by spending time outdoors with her dog, Tank. She takes him on walks or hikes. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia, and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.

Strength Training

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. Strength training may also help you:

  • Develop strong bones
  • Manage your weight
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Manage chronic conditions
  • Sharpen your thinking skills

Other healthy habits? “Prioritizing digestion,” she writes in the same post. “Making sure I get enough fiber & starting off every morning with a juice cleanse. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely! Don’t skip the doc apts, always better to be preventative.”

Hiking

Mariana enjoys hiking. “Elevation therapy,” she captioned a post from one of her fitness adventures. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of some respiratory issues

Mariana does reformer Pilates. “POV: Stepping into the prettiest torture chamber,” she wrote across a video of herself at the studio. Why is Pilates a good workout? According to the Mayo Clinic, the workout has many benefits, as it “strengthens the body's inner core while increasing its flexibility, resulting in improved overall health.” It can also promote longer, leaner muscles, injury prevention, stress and back pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, and heightened mind-body awareness.

Emsculpt NEO

Mariana recently got an aesthetic body treatment, Emsculpt NEO. “I’ve heard all the rage about the benefits to spot reducing fat & toning muscle so I had to give it a try to target those pesky lower abs. It was a 10/10 & a great addition to my workout routine,” she wrote.
