Ulrika Jonsson is enjoying one of the major perks of working from home—getting a little sunshine whenever she feels like it. Swimming and Pilates

Jonsson has arthritis, which made her turn to low-impact exercises such as Pilates. "I started about a month ago, Zero Gravity Pilates," she says. "It's using that reformer piece of equipment, and because it's zero gravity you're not putting any pressure on the muscles. But when I do that I can hear and feel my hip bone click, and the pain from that. But I know that what I'm doing is strengthening all the muscles. I used to do a lot of swimming which was definitely an excellent exercise for me but they're pretty much the only two things."

Home Cooking

Jonsson loves cooking at home, saying she finds it therapeutic. "I spend a lot of time cooking," she says. "Throughout my life, that's been my passion, so that's my main thing. And I have my garden. I take my HRT, I eat well, I drink occasionally. I'm home on my own a lot, but I'm really happy in that state."

Gardening and Walking

Jonsson stays as active as she can to lessen the symptoms of her arthritis. "Mobility is something we really value and I certainly do as someone who is active," she says. "I'm up and about doing things all the time, whether it's gardening or walking… Do not put me in some box or bracket of old, past it and couple it with all these negative words because people who do suffer, we need all the positivity we can get."

Pickling and Fermenting

Jonsson loves pickling and fermenting foods, which have been shown to be good for gut health. "I really love traditional British foods but I always lean back on my Swedish roots (if that's physically possible), so I come up with a happy mix of the two," she says. "The Swedes have always lived their culinary lives at the behest of nature and the climate and I like that relationship and reliance. I know foraging has become very trendy over the past few years; as has pickling and fermenting. We've been doing that for generations and I love that aspect. Seasonal definitely is best."

Open About Menopause

Jonsson is open about the difficulties of menopause, having spoken about the unexpected symptoms such as anxiety and weight gain. "I wasn't putting all the things together, of sort of a little bit of weight gain… because I was still exercising, swimming six kilometers a week, and eating healthily," she says. "So I just wasn't putting these things together, and then my GP just said, 'I think you're probably perimenopausal, it's probably starting'."
